promotion finance question

Post by brexit » Sat Mar 01, 2025 8:21 pm

Question is it worth more financially to the club to be promoted through the playoffs or be promoted through the automatic positions?

Don't the finances from the Wembley final traditionally go to the loser, as promotion to the Prem brings £100+ mill so the only gain is the play off semi final gate/tv receipts

One would imagine that for the integrity of the competition places 1 and 2 would reward higher than places 3-6, regardless of 3 extra games and Wembley.

this and a lot less time to get everything organised for the following season - though there is talk of a split in the transfer window as a result of the Club World Cup nonsense that will play out in the US this summer

There are no merit/prize monies in the EFL - that was a Premier League thing created by the bigger clubs in an effort to re-enforce their stranglehold on the European places (which as we know gives them fortunes in extra income as well

Thanks for that I didn't realise there was no prize money in the EFL.

I think you underestimate the gate money at a Wembley play off final.
If you divide monies by 3. Us, the oppo and FA.

30k by 100 quid average ticket price. 3m? Add an extra full house for the semi final including corporate.

You might get near ST money for the year.

God forbid we end up in the lottery of the play offs against the likes of West Brom. The takings would be scant consolation

Indeed Elizabeth. 'Lottery ' would be an apt description. We struggled against West Brom and given you actually have to score goals to progress in the play offs maybe the best we can hope for is a series of frustrating 0-0's and scrape through on penalties

Maybe we can stop keep referring to 0-0 games now, considering there has only been 1 in the last 8 games.

I'm sure the likes of Leeds and Sheff U will remind us often enough, even though our goal difference is much better than Sheff U's.

At least if we get playoffs there's plenty of people on here who won't need tickets as they can't make it.

Saves the mad rush for tickets

And yet Sheff United have only scored two more than us.

What's their excuse for lack of goals?

You do realise that we’re the second top goal scorers of the teams that currently hold the play off positions and have a goal difference of +39 with Sunderland being the next best on +21, don’t you?
