Shelvey out for the season

Post by agreenwood » Sun Mar 09, 2025 8:18 am

So says the Burnley Express.

The most memorable thing about his stint will end up being his song and one nice pass.

I’d imagine there’ll be a few distraught fans at least.

For some he was all they cared about.

That’s not the best news.

Apparently picked it up early in the game vs Preston which may explain his performance.

Now have 4 senior players for 3 roles.

Sad news about Shelvey, but we have Bauress who I think can be considered as a contender in an emmergency and hopefully Ramsey soon

I think SP was using Sarmiento as an attacking midfielder late on yesterday, and before someone suggests it we can’t play CJ in midfield and knacker all the defence up.

Sonne has played in midfield for Peru I believe so is another option if we get a bit desperate.

Silly to let Massengo go to sign Shelvey, Massengo is more than capable of getting minutes in the championship.
Is Shelvey really injured though? Find it weird if he picked it up first half V PNE because when his number went up to be subbed he threw his arms up and had a little wobbler in the centre circle, he sulked off but if you knew you were injured why would you? Are we sure it isn't attitude issues?

We've got the big 4, plus Sonne and Flemming who have played in conventional midfield roles, young Bauress and McDermott and Ramsey to come back and a host of players who can play as tricky 10s. Injuries are never good news but of all the players who could have got injured Shelvey is about the most expendable.

Still much more concerned about the lack of cover on the left side of defence.

It's not right to keep players here just in case we need them for 5 minutes off the bench at some point. I think Parker has been very good (and fair) in identifying players who need to be playing, and giving them the opportunity to do so. Massengo, Hountondji, Ekdal, Delcroix, Rodriguez could all have been forced to stay 'just in case' but it wouldn't have done any of them any good and may breed resentment if they were denied good opportunities.

Did cross my mind that this could be a face saver after Parker decided he was unlikely to feature again because not fit enough .

I don't understand why Massengo would have only got 5 mins here and there, he's more than capable of playing regular and could have been used more often as a sub to give other players a rest

Why’s it silly to let Massengo go, for all we know Massengo asked to leave to get minutes

Whose game time are you reducing to give Massengo more minutes? Cullen? Hannibal? Brownhill? The lad needs to be playing matches at his age. We have 4 players capable of playing those 2 midfield positions, plus Bauress if we get stretched beyond that.

The guy has barely played in 18 months, so let's write him off based on a 10 minute sub appearance

As much as I was quite pleased to sign him and thought he did well against Soton and Wednesay i am not sure how he fits into the league squad unless we are really chasing game (in which case as someone above said you might chance other options instead so might not be the blow it could have been

Not sure what you were watching. Thought he looked tidy, albeit against a terrible side down to 10. Some of the little passes he played look like those many of our other players (Edwards aside) couldn’t make. Clear he’s got years of PL experience.

We can't miss him as we never really had him to miss.A fully fit motivated Shelvey is far better than anything we have at the club.We would have certainly missed having that. Whether we would have got that is a question we will never be able to answer.

He did all right yesterday, I thought. It was little more than a training game when he came on, the game was already won. He did what he needed to do, he was tidy and forward looking with his play, not sure what else he should have been doing.

Unfortunately Redmond and Shelvey have been more of a Gazza signing than Wrighty. Stoke had a very successful time getting the last drops out of fading stars back in the day.We move on Hannibal has all the attributes to be as good as Shelvey was.He just needs to work on his shooting .

Couldn’t agree more.

A couple of his first touches were a little shaky but it was clear he can play and just needs to get back up to speed.

Once again, some very silly comments about Redmond on this thread.
