Tbf lots of happy memories of listening in the car before and after games, was a bit of a ritual. Back in the days before everyone could instantly get team news/results on their phone.
This!?! My memories are stuck in the car climbing up the road outside of Townley after a midweek game with my dad driving. They used to use the song "Porcelain" by Moby as the background music whilst I think it was Gary Hickson(?) the presenter running through all the nights scores.

Wow! Taking me back 25 years now....

To this day if i hear that song it takes me right back to being in the car with my Dad and Grandad after a game.

Re: David Dunn’s attitude to Burnley

Not only is half David Dunn’s family Burnley fans but growing up in Great Harwood a fair percentage of his mates are. I remember bumping into him at Whalley post office and the fear I was about to attack him when he realised I was a Burnley fan. He calmed down after I mentioned some mutual friends and after that was sound enough. He played for Burnley as a schoolboy, but moved over to Blackburn as a fan, and it was easier to travel to Darwen. It seems Rovers players were warned all Burnley fans were likely to inflict physical harm on them at the time; their centre half Peacock went ashen when I told him I supported Burnley when he was picking up his wife’s specs at a fancy opticians where I was manager.

Exactly the same memories. Moby and Nightmares on Wax, what a great post-match soundtrack.

Oh my word, Les Nuits by Nightmares of Wax! Didn't realise that was there, always partial to a bit of 'You Wish'

Very much going down nostalgia lane now.

Just need that but bouncing goal music and I'm back in 2003

I still have the second half commentary somewhere on a C-90 cassette. David Jones and David Jones only, no sidekick on comms back then
Was gonna say i was sure there was 2nd half commentary rather than 'goal action' !!! I remember coming downstairs to put on the radio to find it was 0,0 at halftime and thinking it was a decent score for first half. Then they scored but Mabbutt score the og and then we went in front ...

Was Roberts scored the own goals (both of them). I have vivid memories of listening to that second half (I was 13 and there was no chance of an away game in London on a school night). Always remember my fury at Ray Clemence not being sent off for his deliberate hand ball (it was the first season of red cards for deliberate hand ball stopping a goal). I stormed up stairs to the loo, leaving doors open so I could still hear the radio down stairs. We scored from the free kick when I was mid wee. Disaster!

its an amateurish station, they are and have long been a service that virtually ignores Burnley.
Theyll drone on about morecambe even when we are playing.
its a putrid mess of dull presenters, inevitable slop of 80's dross music, usually some nonsense about lost cats or some inane musical at a church hall.

Lancashire and Burnley really are miles behind other areas in terms of local radio and media. Maybe its because the big players such as Manchester and Liverpool broke away but West Yorks local radio and TV is so far ahead of the likes of radio Lancs its like going back into the dark ages when I visit family in Burnley
What was BBC Leeds commentary like yesterday pal? Any good?

I've had it on several times this season now on the way home in the car and in nearly every case I have managed the 20 minute drive to hear absolutely nothing about our game. They reference it but give it little to no analysis. Yesterday it was 10 minutes of "Where have Blackburn gone wrong today?" yet again ( :D ) then 5 minutes of Blackpool and 5 minutes of Morecambe. Is our analysis straight after the final whistle as we walk to the car?

I remember the days of B*stards being the higher placed team and the coverage was almost 40% about them and the other clubs shared the rest and I put it down to them being in the Prem. However it clearly never changed during our time up there and even now whilst we are clearly Lancashires top team we most definitely seem to come down the pecking order.

Back in the day (pre Jack Walker) they had Jack Holden covering them. Now anyone who listened to him will know how he was totally biased to them. Then Graham Liver came along and now it's Andy Bayes. It's quite telling how they always seem to get their own dedicated reporter. I don't think we have ever had that on that station and even Scott Read is more a general presenter these days. Blackpool have Ian Chisnell and Morecambe Derek Quinn but we get whoever is spare that day.

Nothing has changed in that respect in years and neither will it going forward. It is clear where the stations favouritism lies.

I met Ray Clemence doing a Coca Cola tour with the FIFA World Cup before the 2002 tournament at a Sainsburys store near St Albans. I had my photo taken in my Lanway Burnley shirt holding the trophy (so at least one Claret can say they have lifted the World Cup!) and I mentioned the non sending off to Clemence and that I forgave him when Billy Hamilton slammed the fourth goal past him. Nice guy, very approachable and happy to chat football.

On the subject of Radio Lancs and the linking of songs to football matches, I always remember getting back to the car after the Sherpa Van win against PNE in 1988 and tuning in to RL to hear all about our victory and forthcoming trip to Wembley. The first song I heard was Mary's Prayer by Danny Wilson and every time I hear that song it takes me back to that unforgettable night.

Radio Blackburn has always been naff.To be fair BBC radio live game coverage is no better interrupting comments to cover some horse race in Ayr with 3 men and a dog watching.

Who did Gary Hickson actually support, does anyone know? I always got the impression it was Preston with how he spoke about them (and....us) during that sort of 99-2005 period. He was a good presenter in spite of the fact it felt very much like he was enjoying Burnley mostly being pretty underwhelming in the mid noughties.

Gary Hickson was really good at being impartial, but his actual preferred team, even though he wasn’t a fervent supporter, was Blackpool.

He did used to enjoy Burnley fans’ contributions to the phone in, though, as we were normally the most vocal and contributed the most to his show.

Well I never! I'd have never guessed that. I suppose it shows our own innate biases/insecurities and how we can misread someone as I was so certain 'his' team was Preston (which would be anything but, if he was more of a Blackpool fan!). Great host though, and his voice along with some of the music mentioned above and of course "RADIO LANCASHIRE....GOAL ACTION" is embedded in so many of my memories as a kid. Getting back to Fulledge car park on the grass with my Dad, whacking the radio on to see how the other local clubs were doing and his voice giving the rundown over the top of Moby - Porcelain. Good times.

Scott Reads mum is called Bev if I remember rightly.
My mate worked with her years ago and she invited us all round for a bbq. Scott was only a teenager then (in the 90s is this)
He took control of the bbq but with it looking stormy he decided to do it inside the end of the garage. Ended up nearly setting fire to it. He won the 2BR competition and now is very good at what he does. Just don't let him near a bbq :D

Loved working with Gary, a brilliant host who I was in awe of while watching him work throughout the Saturday. A master of multitasking in the moment. Such a sound man, hope he's doing well. His lad used to sit with me on the phones and I had this ongoing thing with Gary for months where he wouldn't tell me who he supported. managed to wangle it out of his lad in the end via a bit of deceptive means. I was friendly with Phil Brown who used to present The Drift on Radio Lancashire... he tried (unsuccessfully) to get me a copy of the elusive 1980s GOAL ACTION jingle...
If anybody has a copy of it anywhere.. I'm sure a lot of us would love to hear it!
nb: The original from 1984 or thereabouts... I think they created a newer one in the 90s which was nothing like the original.

I saw this as well recently. It’s fantastic Burnley has a radio station. Hope at some point they cover games/BFC news, press conferences, etc.

Would be great for Burnley to have a completely biased radio station like Blackburn do with BBC radio Blackburn :D

It certainly would NC, currently their BFC headlines link to the Burnley Express articles. It would be a bit more investment to do OBs from the turf for example.
They do live broadcasts from the studio already, so it’s not just music streaming, and their bookface does promote BFC in the community food bank https://www.facebook.com/radio4burnley/

I had a lot of time for Gary - I'd have stopped listening a long time before if he hadn't been on. Always fair with us, and I never subscribed to the 'Blackburn fan' line.

Ah that Facebook page says 2021 so must’ve been around longer than I thought. I’m not on FB so don’t get to hear about these things.

Love that their logo is in claret and blue - I think we should make much more of our club

Not sure what OBs are  but if you mean commentary’s then most likely as I’ve heard they’re outrageously expensive. Would love to see it though.

This season it’s really been stark how disinterested the media are in Burnley when we’re not a premier league club. Pressers only seem to have BBC Lancs and the Burnley Express. Athletic have dropped us for print coverage, etc. Hopefully the club have noticed this and help support local media like this more as they’ll be the ones that stick around if we don’t get back up.

Gary Hickson was really good at being impartial, but his actual preferred team, even though he wasn’t a fervent supporter, was Blackpool.

He did used to enjoy Burnley fans’ contributions to the phone in, though, as we were normally the most vocal and contributed the most to his show.
I knew Gary Hickson

He was a Salford lad and a Man Utd supporter

he had a passing interest in Blackpool because that was where he lived. He was a great club DJ, started with Northern Soul in the 70's but was very active in the late 80's club scene including a regular night at the Angels for a while along with a number of the Blackburn raves

Originally when it was introduced I seem to remember it being a clip from a Dave Jones commentary where he shouts "IT'S A GOALLLLL" no music or anything and then they'd cut to the game where the goal had just been scored

Also they used to run a Saturday 6 where you had to guess the outcome of 6 matches, if noone guessed correctly the prize would roll over to the next Saturday

The prize being 7" singles with 5 being added every week until it was won. It hadn't been won for weeks before I somehow managed to win. The prize was 65 7" singles of varying musical quality!

Well I never knew that about Gary Hickson.

When we played Bournemouth in the last game of a PL season , whilst watching the cricket before the game I got talking to a well dressed bloke with a media lanyard on. It turned out be Guy Havard and we talked about his time at Radio Lancashire. He always enjoyed working with Burnley and was well looked after, he couldn’t say the same about Blackburn. Much preferred coming to cover a Burnley game. He was decent bloke.

So, that's Blackburn, Blackpool, Preston, Stoke City and now Man U he supports?

Any others?

FWIW I met him briefly in the 90's at a fans' forum and he said he didn't actually have a favourite team.

Blackpool and that was from the horse’s mouth at a Sportman’s Dinner.

As I said, he wasn’t a fan as such, but they were his preferred local team due to him living there.

Either there are a few people telling porkies on here or Hickson is telling different people different things.

If it's the latter, then it's quite amusing! :D

I thought he was good on Radio Lancashire. Wasn't he a Plymouth fan? (Guy Havard that is)

I see Gary a few times a year, mainly due to our northern soul connections, he definetly has a spot for Burnley, not that he says much but his comments betray his like of clarets and ambivalence to Btsrds

Spot on, I talk to Gaz, soul stuff, lives in Blackpool and has a soft spot for Burnley.

It was very much the latter - he wasn't a massive football fan, but grew up a Utd fan

He used to have a dance show in the late 80's early 90's on a Sunday evening on Radio Blackburn as it was then - I often sat in the studio with him

One of my favourite memories of his DJing was at a warehouse party one Saturday night/Sunday Morning and him dropping Tyrell Corporations "6 o'clock in the morning" at exactly 6am the place went nuts as people realised the connection.

The club DJing took a back seat as his career took off with Radio Lancashire Sport which saw him move from production to presenting at the station
