I see Gary when I do northern soul at Blackpool Tower, I leave my car on his drive, brilliant when he took over the soul programme, good knowledge, he was a top dancer at the Highland room , Blackpool Mecca and ran a coach to Wigan Casino, craziest thing BBC did was push him out, he was gutted after all those years, top man with a soft spot for Burnley.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 8:14 pmI knew Gary Hickson

he had a passing interest in Blackpool because that was where he lived. He was a great club DJ, started with Northern Soul in the 70's but was very active in the late 80's club scene including a regular night at the Angels for a while along with a number of the Blackburn raves

Re: Radio Lancs
(Gary Hickson) - He was a very professional presenter / reporter and did all the Lancashire clubs proud on his various shows. He had a good manner about him and enjoyed a bit of fun but at the same time he didnt suffer fools gladly and was very firm in his opinions and this came across well during his interviews with the various sports people he dealt with.

Well, Chester, if that's the case then I'm the victim of quite a committed rib!Chester Perry wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 8:14 pmI knew Gary Hickson

I wonder who used to provide the drinks to the press room before the game back when Guy Havard covered Burnley......NL Claret wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 9:04 pmWell I never knew that about Gary Hickson.
When we played Bournemouth in the last game of a PL season , whilst watching the cricket before the game I got talking to a well dressed bloke with a media lanyard on. It turned out be Guy Havard and we talked about his time at Radio Lancashire. He always enjoyed working with Burnley and was well looked after, he couldn’t say the same about Blackburn. Much preferred coming to cover a Burnley game. He was decent bloke.

I copied the comments to Gary. Wow he says, good old Clarets fans, I prided myself on providing a good honest service for football fans in our area and stressed to my sorts team to be proffesional at all times. Gary never does commit to a preference but from chatting to him I had no doubt which fans he preferred dealing with and which he found hard work, good man!
It was a desperately sad time when Gary was invited to reapply for his job at Lancs, he refused, rightly after all those years to go along with BBCs reorganisation, a sad loss to the soul scene with his weekly show.

Re: Radio Lancs
Gary Hickson was a very professional presenter on Radio Lancs, who knew his brief and was always a pleasure to listen to.
When my son was was playing footy in the under 11s league, we got Gary to turn up for the prize giving evening, and he made a great job of comparing it. This would have been in the late 90s, and was a testament to his decency that he gave his time free for our kids.
Incidentally, the special guest that evening who actually presented the prizes was a certain Colin Hendry. My lad took great pleasure in showing him his Burnley top when he got his trophy, but Hendry took it with good grace.

I don’t know who he supported, the conversation started with local cricket and then moved onto his time at RL , followed by living in West London. He was good on RL and would have been the reason his career progressed. Wasn’t there an interview with Wegner took exception to Havard? He was a great bloke when I spoke to him, you don’t always get that from some in those roles. He was working and on a pre match break and took time to have a wander and engage.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 10:06 pmI thought he was good on Radio Lancashire. Wasn't he a Plymouth fan? Re: Radio Lancs
I think you might be mistaking his comment after the win at Plymouth that got us to Wembley, Matt. Something along the lines of 'Jimmy Mullen's Claret and Blue Armada' setting saIl for Wembley. His enthusiasm around that time never suggested to me he was from that part of the world, but I'll stand to be corrected of course.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 10:06 pmI thought he was good on Radio Lancashire. Re: Radio Lancs
That’s bang on about Hickson, a United fan who lived in Blackpool. And also a NS DJ.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 8:14 pmI knew Gary Hickson

Very much so and the Plymouth fan who came up with “Jimmy Mullen’s Claret & Blue Army set sail from Plymouth tonight for Wembley a week Sunday.”JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 10:06 pmI thought he was good on Radio Lancashire. Wasn't he a Plymouth fan? (Guy Havard that is)

Corrected and still stood. He took the defeat well. Wasn't aware of any allegiance to Plymouth.
