Gazza

Post by Papabendi » Sun Mar 30, 2025 11:17 am

Long article in the Telegraph about Gazza's talk shows around the country. One featured was in Preston and apparently he was less than complimentary about Burnley. A bit sad.

I wouldn’t want to go a listen to him, I can’t understand a word he says. I do wonder if he actually remembers playing for us. A terrible signing from a football perspective but a good one for the commercial aspect.

Glen Little sums up the impact that Gazza had on our season quite nicely here I think.

Got paid a reported £200k for 8 weeks with us.
I went to Grimsby to see us get beat and he started and was absolutely awful….

He always speaks about his time at Burnley in a disparaging way and has built in the story about the club ripping him off on the shirt sales into his after dinner routine. No doubt like most of the stuff he says it’s made up ********.

At this stage of his life he could have taken the route of just being honest about his time at burnley and tell the world what we all know now. He was an unfit alcoholic and a shadow of the player he was and he should take the blame fully and apologise to our fans.

Unfortunately he’s still puddled and like he has had all his life he has the wrong people around him and very much still struggling to cope. Some people who have been through what he has feel better opening up and being honest - for whatever reason Gazza prefers to embarrass himself into trying to get people to believe he is happy and doing ok.

Great player but pretty much always been a childish idiot (and a lot worse)

Compared to his 'performance' at Brammal Lane the one at Grimsby was a masterclass. 😟

Against Sheffield United Gazza was selected as a midfield 'runner/marker'
He should have been told not to come further back than the halfway line and use his undoubted skills in the opposition half.

I seem to remember him playing for us in reserve game on the Turf. At half time he sat on the steps of the players tunnel and smoked a cigarette.

Probably the opposite to Gazza was Ian Wright who I never saw play for us but heard he was very good and a true pro.

'his undoubted skills' that day were never on show. From what I can remember he had difficulty standing up so I'm guessing a teammate must have tyed his bootlaces for him and then pointed him in the direction of the pitch.

Not sure about the cigarette though.

I think Beresford may have been in goals for Boro as well.

I also have a vague recollection of him being subbed and he ran off the pitch ... I also seem to remember we were told he was seen diving into a car driven by his mate "5 bellies" and speeding off up Brunshaw Rd (Harry Potts Way) still in his kit.

Whether that was true or not 🤷

He played on the Turf for Middlesbrough Reserves on 23 March 1999 & Beresford indeed was in goal for Boro. The Burnley team that night was Mawson, Vindheim, Devenney, West, Williamson, Morgan, Graham, Ford, Eastwood, Jepson, Maylett Subs; Kelly, Kval, Kevan, Shandran & Berry.

As I posted previously Gazza never played for our Reserves.

He’d easily make our biggest waste of money and lack of effort eleven. Can’t believe anyone would pay to listen to his ramblings. We are talking about someone who went to speak to the madman Raul Moat. Once a great talent now a complete wreck.

You don’t. He never played a reserve team game. Having said that, I’m not sure he played for the first team.

I remember someone emailing me in the Friday night before he signed saying he’d just seen Gazza worse the wear for drink in the Kettledrum.

Wonderful player in his prime. I just wish he’d never come near Burnley.

I remember taking my young son for his first game at Turf when Burnley reserves played Middlesbrough. The Bob Lord stand was opened and attendance had been boosted by news that Gazza and also Marlon Beresford were in the Boro team.

It was great to see Gazza at close quarters displaying his full repertoire of skills. His touch on the ball and dead ball kicks were as good as anyone else I’ve seen.

The numerous kids were treated to Gazza joking with the players, officials and crowd.

It was a bumper crowd for his debut. Especially for a Wednesday night.

If his injury time free kick at home against Norwich in the last game of the season had been an inch lower we'd have snuck into the play offs, he'd have been a hero and who knows what else may have followed.

Possibly, but we should have been better than a last-gasp shot at the play-offs.
