Club really is missing a trick and not doing half n half scarfs for them - Burnley / Royston Vasey FC could be a decent little earner.

I didnt mention it on here as I thought I was maybe being a little hypersensitive but when I watch Bank of Dave 2 a few weeks ago I did feel an air of disappointment that the football club hadn't set up its own bank for the people of Burnley

I've never used the hospitality areas, so wouldn't dream on commenting about what they're like, yet some do, regularly

Re: Oddies
I think criticising the club for not bailing out Oddies is beyond daft.
However given this thread went off at a tangent and mentioned the current catering contract with Levy I’m not sure what is wrong with criticising the club for their experience of this whether it’s in hospitality or the concourse.

Re: Oddies
For avoidance of doubt, it wasn’t a criticism at all. It was simply an observation that I’d like to see the club support local businesses, which I don’t think is particularly controversial? And since they’re a major consumer of the type of products they make, not particularly daft either.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 11:04 amI think criticising the club for not bailing out Oddies is beyond daft.

It was off topic though and so apologise to thread readers on that point. It was a passing comment I didn’t really expect to be picked up on.

But you didn’t say ‘support’ local businesses you said it disappoints you the club would not consider saving them - and with all due respect that is a bit daft and extremely naive. So much so that I’ve noticed the very idea of the football club stepping in to save other local businesses has become a bit of a running joke on this thread and other threads too.

I suppose what I find ‘disappointing’, and probably why I used that word, is that we’ve outsourced a lot of services over the last three years to supposedly specialist companies, but I don’t think we’ve seen any improvement in service, quality or pricing. I sense a lot of time and probably money will’ve been put in to negotiating those contracts and transitioning, not least in severance to impacted local staff. My view is that effort and money could’ve been far better directed at supporting/growing local businesses and jobs through innovative partnerships and tie ups. And the fanbase would much prefer what that could offer.
I’m quite balanced on ALK, I feel they’ve done good and bad, but this is an area I think they could’ve done more.
For what it’s worth, I thought your follow-up post raised a lot of good points - the change in business model that would’ve been required, that the levy outsourcing wasn’t aimed at improving concourse catering and how the loss of premier league football has probably impacted the commerciality of the contract. I was planning on replying when I had time and it’d have been nice to debate them with you.
Anyway, per above post, my apologies for inadvertently taking the thread off topic. Which was an important one and I’m really pleased to hear that at least one store is due to reopen soon.

I spoke with a friend who I worked with at Oddies bakery 40 years ago who was still at Oddies up to the closure. The bakery equipment is being sold at an online auction and the building itself apparently being taken over by the carpet shop next door. The shops will not be Oddies as we know them, they will be an expansion of Waterfields so anyone hoping for a return of the savoury, bilberry charlotte, sad cake and many other Oddies favourites are likely to be disappointed.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 7:30 pmWaterfields are reopening seven according to the Burnley Express.

Re: Oddies
I’m in town and just bumped into my friend Sue who worked in the shop in town. She has decided to retire but the rest of the staff there are going back.
She believes it will continue to trade under the Oddie’s name for a while but doesn’t think any of the Oddie’s recipes have been sold so it will be Waterfields produce.
At least it will be open and a local(ish) bakery.

That’s good news that the sites are re-opening and also good that the staff are ( mainly ?) being retained . Hell of a task taking over multiple failed sites, but Waterfields seem to have a successful model and hopefully do well .

Re: Oddies
Our hospitality areas are very good, the standard of food and service is top notch in my experience. I haven't seen a noticeable decline in take up, but willing to be proven wrong
Some people would prefer it if they only served hafners pies and a warm black pudding from Burnley market, but that's not the real world

Re: Oddies
I got lunch from the St James St branch on Monday. Around 12.30 I recall. The stock was quite sparse, which I suspect is an 'easing-in' given that many won't know it's open.
Sandwiches all pre-packed, I got a cajun chicken baguette (bit bohemian for the previous incarnation of Oddies) and it was bang average, on what reminded me of supermarket bread. A long way from the 'homemade' feel of Oddies - but at £4.20 ish, the same price.. albeit a decent size. Couldn't criticise it, but I'm not in a hurry for another. (Not enough mayo for a start - if there was any at all.)
I also had a cream donut which wasn't classic Oddies confectionery, despite being served in an Oddies bag (unlike the sandwich served with their own named sticker.)
Overall, I think it was exactly £6 for average sandwich and an average donut. It's probably the going rate, but more expensive than Greggs and nowhere near as tasty as Oddies was.

Burnley’s new outsourcing catering contract I believe was more to do with its strategy to grow corporate hospitality revenues rather than improve things in the concourse food which it clearly hasn’t.

Re: Oddies
Heard a couple of older gentlemen in the BL on Saturday commenting on the new "Oddies" in the town centre.
Allegedly same staff, same uniforms, same logo, inferior food (twice the price of greggs) and no hot pastries.
Conclusion, trade was very slow.

I called in last week and bought a steak bake. Not impressed. In my steak bake there were two small pieces of meat and a piece of gristle. The two pieces of meat were so chewy that they actually made my jaw ache. I discarded the gristle into a paper napkin. I expect better at over three quid a pop.

Tbh without going off on a political tangent, £8.30 for that, with what the cost of employing people is going to be for business of this nature… is really not that much at all.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:45 pmI went in last week and got two steak bakes and a small loaf of bread - nothing special to be honest and cost me £8.30.
Pretty established business. Oddies ran its course as a business, but hope the business thrives under the new owners. Just want local businesses doing well (waterfields being a north west based family owned bakery), and kind of appreciate they are going to need our support to do so.

I do think keeping the Oddies name, was possibly not their best idea, but I hope folks give it time and a chance to establish. What produce I’ve purchased has been acceptable in our house, although I’ve not had any ‘pie’ items yet. I did think they had a good display of cakes on offer though.

A steak and kidney pie from the Haffners factory shop is £2:50. For an average meat and potato pie at the new Oddies I was charged £3:25.
