Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
I thought under law 11 if a player is offside when the ball is played but a defending deflects the ball by deliberately trying to block it then the attacking player becomes active and onside and can score the goal
I might have read this wrong but when Roberts throws himself at the ball and half blocks it then according to the rules I think that makes the Coventry player active and onside in a new phase of play and therefore the goal stands
This is the section of the offside law that I think makes the officials right as the ball came off Roberts who deliberately tried to block the ball
"A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent."
I've had a few beers tonight so might have overlooked something but I dont see how once Roberts has played the ball then the Coventry player who scored the goal has become active and onside in a second phase of play
Could be completely wrong about this one so hoping if Ive misinterpreted the rule someone can put me straight

No need to 'put you straight' DA. We all enjoy the novelty act and the controversial hot takes.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 10:27 pmCould be completely wrong about this one so hoping if Ive misinterpreted the rule someone can put me straight

Blocking it isn't playing it according to the rules.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 10:27 pmI thought under law 11 if a player is offside when the ball is played but a defending deflects the ball by deliberately trying to block it then the attacking player becomes active and onside and can score the goal

Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
You clearly don’t understand how VAR works. The penalty incident in the Bournemouth game was not seen by Mike Dean on the pitch so play continued while the VAR officials looked at it.dsr wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 7:57 pmI've seen many incidents where the ref has stopped play for something else and VAR has brought it back to give a penalty. Wasn't it against Bournemouth where the ref had given Bournemouth a goal and brought it back for a penalty to us? It happens.
VAR couldn't give the goal because the whistle blew before the ball was in the net, but VAR's jurisdiction over penalties goes on until play stops and has restarted. The next whistle doesn't stop it.
With the incident at Leeds. Jones blew and gave a decision. The second he dead that ruled out any VAR intervention.

I wouldn't normally do this, and it's meant in good humour, but you mocked me the other day for getting a name wrong.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 10:44 pmYou clearly don’t understand how VAR works. Shows even the best of us fall foul of auto correct.

Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
Yep on closer look I think you're right as the definition of deliberate play seems to hang on the defender having control of the ball which when throwing yourself to block the ball as Robrts did is obviously not control of the ball
‘Deliberate play’ is when a player has control of the ball with the possibility of:
passing the ball to a team-mate; or
gaining possession of the ball; or
clearing the ball (e.g. by kicking or heading it).

Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
So are you saying that VAR cannot intervene if the referee makes a clear and obvious error? If you're right, then I certainly don't understand how it works.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 10:44 pmYou clearly don’t understand how VAR works. Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
Of course VAR can review decisions but if the ref blows for a foul, but play continues and ball goes in the net the goal will not count because the ref has blown to stop the game.
VAR will not review the foul for which the ref has blown unless of course its a possible red card, but no matter if the ref got the decision right or wrong the goal will not stand as the ball is dead before its put in the net.
If the ref at Leeds had waited a couple of seconds t see the outcome VAR would have reviewed the whole incident and awarded a goal.
Last years goal by Luton was reviewed for foul on Trafford because the ref kept his whistle in his pocket, if he had awarded a foul against trafford and blown his whistle the goal won't count as the whistle has gone before the ball enters the net, which is why he cuffed it and passed the buck to VAR.

Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
Once he’s blown for the foul, that’s it. VAR cannot and does not adjudicate on fouls on a goalkeeper. I know it wasn’t a foul but he gave it and that is it. VAR cannot get involved in anything that follows. That’s always been clear.

The one at Portsmouth in the 09/10 season where Hredarsson hurled himself to the floor because he was "expecting" a tackle from Wade Elliott which never evolved

Re: The Worst Decision Since ... When?
I'm chucking in the Arsenal winner that was handball and offside in the 97th min after they'd shown 4 mins of extra time. Still grind my teeth over that
