Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
So sad to read that, he reckons he headed the ball 10,000 times in his career.

What horrible news.
We’ve lost so many of our former players to this horrible, disease and a good number more are suffering with it.

That really is tragic news. Probably only a matter of time until heading a ball in football is banned.

Very sad news to a true Claret ....
Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
Just 57 years of age. Shocking situation and hard to see the precautions in place doing much to halt the incidence. Do we now how long the modern lighter ball has been in use and the kind of footballs Andy played with in his career?

Terrible news this, certainly puts to bed that newer balls rather than the old leather ones' don't have an effect.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Sun May 04, 2025 10:00 amThat really is tragic news. Probably only a matter of time until heading a ball in football is banned.

What SAD news Best Wishes to Andy and his family stay strong - Burnley Legend
Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
Smooching news of the year. So young. May its progress be very slow. Good luck PP.
I am not convinced heading the ball is the thing, nowadays, rather the head clashrs, which lay them out for a time. I fear for strikers and centre backs with that.

Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
Awful, Awful news .. It was him and Glen Little who took me from a 'no idea' football hating girlfriend to a (now) 25 year season ticket holder.

Tragic especially he is only 57. He gave all of us so many great memories and possibly soon he won't have any.

Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
The ball is the same weight today as it always has been, just more water resistant. He’s probably right in that it’s the relentless repetition in training that did the damage. Plus playing on with bad head injuries.

Andy Payton, along with Glen Little, weren’t just Burnley players to me, they were my first footballing heroes.

Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
This is aweful.
I've quite recently lost 2 old team mates through death due to dementia, it is a very cruel condition and to see the level of confusion close up is actually frightening.

Re: Andy Payton - Dementia
Is it time for players to wear headgear in training at least. Amazon sell one for football for £9.
