We are very blessed to have such good facilities and an excellent pitch at Turf Moor. Very interesting insight.

Cracking good watch.

It's interesting that the immediate post match activity is not mowing, but 'cleaning of debris' from the pitch. A bit different from the days of Tommy Dans and his pitchfork.

Really enjoyed that. Thoroughly enjoying these insights behind the scenes.
Deputy head groundsman has an interesting name mind.

Bullabill, re Tommy Danns pitchfork. I have the said well worn pitchfork. When Tommy retired, it was then used by his assistant, who became head groundsman John Jameson. John gave it me, when I worked at the Club 50 years ago and saw it in use. So I know it’s authentic. An unusual piece of Turf Moor history.

It is indeed, Bfc. I wonder what Tommy would make of the pitch today? I often think that I would love my old dad to be able to see the Turf now at the end of a busy season. He always praised Tommy and his work, but to see it now would knock him flat!Bfc wrote: ↑Fri May 02, 2025 8:49 amBullabill, re Tommy Danns pitchfork. I have the said well worn pitchfork. Bullabill, I was lucky to meet and chat to either the daughter, or granddaughter of Abel Hudson, who was the head groundsman and Tommy was his assistant. I wrote about this, in a post on here some time ago, as I have a paper cutting article about his retirement.
The article included information of how they had re laid the pitch, using a Herring bone design of clay pipe, (for draining water from the soil), during a close season and it being playable the next season. One of the comments was from a relative of Abel’s, which I was pleased to see.

Our pitch just goes to show how important the level of investment in the playing surface and the right people to maintain it is. Derby by far the worst surface I’ve seen in my 27 years watching the game.

Pitch management and the playing surfaces we have now, are light years away from even 25 years ago .... Going back 50 years, the Baseball Ground and Maine Road were usually rolled mud by mid November ! Here's City v West Ham from March 1970 ...
