Egan-Riley
Off to Strasbourg, done deal according to twitter/X
Re: Egan-Riley
We could potentially need a completely new backline.
Re: Egan-Riley
I don't think this is a massive loss but it's crucial for us to keep Esteve now.

According to who on X?
Re: Egan-Riley
Weird move. Turning down the PL, continue developing with this (much talked about) group & a chance to repay faith shown in him from Parker.
As for what it means for us, we just can’t lose Esteve or Trafford now, you can’t just blow up what made us so good, but I think CJ is replaceable. Michael Keane on a free, Tanganga for 8-10m and/or Rav van den Berg for similar, and you’ve probably got players with just as good / better quality for the PL.

Re: Egan-Riley
Not to forget that Beyer and Ekdal (who has impressed on loan at Groningen) are due back in pre-season.
Re: Egan-Riley
Parker was confident he’d sign too.
Re: Egan-Riley
Well, it would appear that things have moved quite swiftly on this one and clearly the money and the opportunity being offered is too good for him to turn down…….

Crazy move. Shocking we couldn’t get him. Matt Williams seemed certain he would be signing too
Re: Egan-Riley
Someone had posted on another thread a few days ago that the rumours were he was unhappy with A: How the club treated him under Kompany, but also B: How the fans behaved towards Trafford last year. I'd heard the same and that his agent did not want him to sign a new deal with us.

Re: Egan-Riley
Strasbourg have a very young talented team but really they are a glorified development squad in a mid table spot in a league sitting in between the Championship and the Premier League.
Maybe CJER doesn’t feel he is good enough yet for the step up? Maybe Parker doesn’t feel he is either? Maybe one does and one doesn’t, and CJ doesn’t want to be on the bench in a position where subs rarely come on?
I like him, but at the end of this season he mentally wobbled with errors on a few occasions, and he isn’t the quickest, or the tallest. I actually think we have better CBs in the squad (Beyer if he is as he was, is one). Then Parker may want to sign a big rock next to Esteve, who I suspect is not for sale, someone like a Dawson type?
I always felt he would go for the reasons boyo states above. I think Trafford will go too, but we hold the cards there.

Seems a strange move on the surface, but he will get paid loads and it is looking likely they will get European football next season. He will also shift sideways to Chelsea for next to no money if he's good enough for the PL as one of their dodgy as hell deals.

Re: Egan-Riley
Isn't the first English player to be lured by Chelski money and won't be the last, although at least he'll get some first team football in their development side.
Unfortunately this is the tough part of trying to convince young players of long term benefit vs short term gains. He could have 1 decent year in the PL and his choice of clubs on great wages, or he could go for better wages to Chelski and potentially never be heard of again.
Best of luck to him, regardless. He certainly played his part in getting us back to the PL.

Re: Egan-Riley
I think he has probably looked at the way a lot of the promoted team were treated under Kompany and questioned the wisdom of any sort of "loyalty" in the modern game. He's doing what is right for him and taking the claret tinted specs off, i can't really blame him.

CJ's agent is his mum, so I presume it's a thought out decision rather than purely financial.
Possibly some opportunity to move to Chelsea at some point if it goes ahead.
He wasn't happy with how he was dealt with under Kompany and we were actively trying to get rid of him.
Shame if it ends like this, deals not done yet tho

If he goes abroad doesn't that mean Burnley miss out on the compensation they'd get if he moved to another English club?

I can’t believe those would be the reason , surely the loyalty and belief from Parker to pick him every match rather than the player with premier league experience that was bought for that position, would supersede what happened in the previous seasons.boyyanno wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 11:25 amSomeone had posted on another thread a few days ago that the rumours were he was unhappy with A: How the club treated him under Kompany, but also B: How the fans behaved towards Trafford last year. Re: Egan-Riley
Not sure how much speculation about his happiness is necessary, it's signing for Chelsea and not many young players turn that down.

Imagine turning a relegation fight and losing most weeks down to potentially play in the champions league next season, seriously his career is going backwards

Aye its basically a sweet spot. Chelsea money, fat sign on fee, and 1st team football at in Ligue Un with close attention from Chelsea's scouts, out of the glare that comes with slogging at the bottom end of the EPL, which he saw Trafford suffer withdaveisaclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 11:35 amNot sure how much speculation about his happiness is necessary, it's signing for Chelsea and not many young players turn that down.

Seems unlikely he'd be earning more at Strasbourg. Outside of a few of the big teams the wage budgets in the Premier League are massively higher than Ligue 1.Poulton-le-Claret wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 11:29 amSeems a strange move on the surface, but he will get paid loads and it is looking likely they will get European football next season. Re: Egan-Riley
If this is true, it’s a bit odd to turn down the chance to play in the Premier League. Strong performances there are more likely to boost your career than playing well for a relatively small Ligue 1 side.
Chances are, if he doesn’t get a move to Chelsea, his next move is to a club of the stature of Palace etc.
Just seems to be taking a bit of a detour to get back into the PL, potentially at not much higher level than he’s just turned down.
Being at a Chelsea feeder club is no guarantee of a route into their first team. They own several hundred other prospects.

Re: Egan-Riley
No man is bigger than our club, 12 months ago we'd have had fans on here saying " I'll drive him there".
Been superb for us this season, but it's his choice and he's free to do what he wants. Good luck to the lad, he was part of history and probably something that will never be matched. I just hope this doesn't have a snowball effect on what seems a very close group..

Don't blame him. Strasbourg will be in Europe next season, maybe even Champions League, nice part of the world and he won't be getting battered most weeks (not a slight on us, just the nature of the PL these days).

A big shame after the season we've just had.
Although a part of me felt that perhaps the PL was one step too far for CJ at CB, at least.

I think we might end up with just one of them

Surely Todd Boehly will be putting more in his bank account than Alan Pace would, especially when you consider any new contract we offer will have a relegation wage drop in it (which I would hope isn't needed

I didn't raise this to throw shade at him, he's been a great defender for us this year- I wish he'd stay with us. If he goes for the money thats fair enough in my book too.

Was a great player for us this season
Suddenly thrust into the first team after being on fringes, being out on loan etc with his career stagnating and he stepped up magnificently
He can go with my respect and thanks.
He owed us nothing, gave us everything this season, despite people on here claiming he wasn't that good etc

A great move for him IMO.
In 12 months time he could be back to being a championship player with his reputation in tatters. This way the pressure is off a little in a league that is undoubtedly easier.

The annoying thing is that teams continue to use multi-club ownership models to circumvent established practices, like compensating clubs for taking their young prospects.

I find it very hard to believe that a professional footballer is leaving because of his treatment under a previous manager. People are stating he was upset that Burnley were trying to move him on; well they would do if their manager told them to. He’s a big boy and if he leaves I don’t think past relations will have had any bearing whatsoever, given the season he’s just enjoyed.
