Egan-Riley
Re: Egan-Riley
Is there any provision in the rules for us to get compensation from Chelsea, assuming this is just a crafty Chelsea move to get round the transfer-within-the-same-country compensation calculations?

Re: Egan-Riley
His weekly wage might not be Chelsea level but there is no doubt a stonking great signing on fee in lieu of a transfer fee

Had a terrific season in a team that was rarely under serious pressure...a great defender when the ball is on the deck.
But ....genuine question marks over his ariel ability in either box... sensible move for him and I wish him well.

Re: Egan-Riley
I’ve nothing against him with this move. He owes us nothing and wish him well. Loyalty works both ways and I’d had been happy to see him leave last summer although I’m glad he didn’t as he’s been amazing this season.
As said above, what I am annoyed at is the blatant loophole Chelsea have used here to get around compensation rules.

Re: Egan-Riley
Let’s be honest. Chelsea don’t necessarily buy players from in play on their team.
He’ll probably be flogged on at some stage to aid Chelsea or Strasbourg’s FFP compliance. That’s probably more likely than him starting many games for them.

If he doesn’t want to be here then good riddance. If he is still salty of how he was treated by a manager who hasn’t been at the club for 12 months then that is his problem, not Parkers. I didn’t like what Coyle did to the club but I wouldn’t blame the club and current manager for it!
Seems like he has an attitude issue if all that is true and he is holding grudges from ancient history.

Bobby Thomas looks a decent bet at Coventry

Let's not forget, CJ was only the fourth choice CB at the start of the season. Even before Bashir signed on loan.

CJER has been superb this season and i was looking forward to seeing him with us in the Premier League next season. However, I would struggle to be convinced that he is or will ever be of the standard good enough to play for Chelsea.

Let’s not start inventing ‘attitude problems’ if a player leaves. If he goes it will be because he sees better career and/or financial options elsewhere. If he goes it’s with thanks from me for playing a big role in our astounding defensive achievements this season and no hard feelings.RickyBobby wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 12:04 pmIf he doesn’t want to be here then good riddance. Re: Egan-Riley
CJ is too small to play at centre half in the Premier League for a team like Burnley. He’ll suit a top 6 team who have the majority of possession, as we tended to have this season in the Championship.
He’s perfectly suited to continental football. Go there for 2 seasons, flourish, turn up at Chelsea. I can see the logic.
He’s been fantastic. If he stays, great, but if he does go it isn’t a disaster. The only disaster will be the fee we get.

Re: Egan-Riley
Money talks it's a short career.Look at the player at Luton who almost died twice We can replace him as Ekdal and Beyer are due back It's imperative we get our other nc players signed up and if not get our replacements in early
Re: Egan-Riley
A loss, but replaceable. It’s far from the end of the world. A fit Beyer is better anyway.
We all know Trafford is going too for silly money which will allow us to strengthen in multiple positions.
Good luck to CJ, he’s earned his move.

Re: Egan-Riley
Obviously gutted if he goes but I wish him nothing but the best. Many thanks for last season C J and I hope that you have a long and successful career
Re: Egan-Riley
The tone of this thread seems to be that he's simultaneously not good enough to be a Premier League centre half (mainly due to size/pace) but will also be playing for Chelsea in a few seasons. It's intriguing

Re: Egan-Riley
Wasn't CJ and his agent angry a couple of years ago, when Burnley faffed around with his paperwork for a loan move? At a time when he was stuck in the U21's by Kompany and basically told he's not needed.
The paperwork ended up being sent 5 minutes before the deadline, we were probably more interested in our own signings
Anyway, I wish him the best. He will be remembered for being part of this one amazing record breaking season.
His career with us will be the perfect example of how fickle football can be and how quickly things can change. He will be making hay while the sun shines.
He's replacable though, we've had many good defenders here that have moved on in recent memory and we move on (Keane/Tarkowski/Mee etc)
I'll be traumatised if we lose Esteve though.

Re: Egan-Riley
I wonder what % of signings “Chelsea” have made in the last 10 years have played more than 10 games for Chelsea’s first team.
Probably less than 50% of their direct signings and an even smaller proportion of the signings they’ve made for their feeder clubs.

Just a fonancial commodity for Chelsea. If I was him, I would resist andy urge to sign for Strasbourg/Chelsea.
Re: Egan-Riley
He works well with Esteve. He will miss Esteve covering his errors, should he go.

Re: Egan-Riley
Not a huge suprise if true ,as his mum (agent) has been turning down what the club has been offering , though our early offers were incredibly derisory . Huge signing on fee must be very tempting though . He’s a talent for sure and no idea what’s happened with Beyer . Steve probs goes too .
Or is this just kidology waiting for us to improve our offer ?

People saying it’s OK if Egan-Riley goes because we’ve got Beyer and Ekdal coming back are remembering their PL performances very differently to the way I do.

Re: Egan-Riley
The entire backline was left exposed by our tactics.
They had little to no protection and we played one of the highest defensive lines in Europe's top 5/6 leagues (top 6 percentile).
We need more physicality across the pitch, this opens up a spot to go and grab a dominant CB to partner Esteve.
Beyer may well become a RB for us in the PL - I know he's played there for Mönchengladbach. UTC!

Re: Egan-Riley
Not at all.
You can’t compare Beyer and CJ at Premier League level as the latter hasn’t played there.
The only comparison that can be made is how both fared in the Championship, and also taking into account that Beyer (and Ekdal) both played in a system that was far more open.

Re: Egan-Riley
As disappointing it is to lose an asset for peanuts I think this will be a blessing.
A back 4 of Beyer, New 6ft 4 Agressive in air, Esteve, Humphreys is the type of back 4 required in this league

Some absolutely morons on here at times, how quick people forget how he was treated prior to this season and just how committed and impressive he was this season for us. If he goes i wish him nothing but the very best and thanks for being part of a truly historical and record breaking team.

Interesting to see Ipswich switched to this recently, O’Shea has been playing right back and Greaves left back.OssyClaret wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 12:42 pmAs disappointing it is to lose an asset for peanuts I think this will be a blessing.

Re: Egan-Riley
To be fair, Jordan Beyer only played 14 games (got his current injury in the 15th game). In those games we won 3, drew 2 and lost 9. Not great, but given that by the end of the season we had only won 2 further games and drew 7 whilst losing the other 15 games after his injury, he clearly made a positive impact. I would just question how much his injury has and will affect him.

Re: Egan-Riley
Disappointing but I always felt that losing him was a likely outcome. A shame we miss out on the compo too with it being a foreign club.
As much as I'd have liked to see how our existing backline got on in the Prem, in the way this makes it a little less awkward for us to be looking for a bigger, more commanding centre half to go straight into the team. The physicality of the Premier League would have been a real challenge for Egan Riley, and defending set pieces is going to be critical for us next season.

Re: Egan-Riley
In a mid table spot? What are you talking about? Strasbourg are 6th in the league on the same points as the 4th placed side. 4th place would give them a crack at the qualifying rounds for the Champions League next season and in any case 6th would also put them into some form of European competition.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 11:25 amStrasbourg have a very young talented team but really they are a glorified development squad in a mid table spot in a league sitting in between the Championship and the Premier League.
Maybe CJER doesn’t feel he is good enough yet for the step up? Maybe Parker doesn’t feel he is either? Maybe one does and one doesn’t, and CJ doesn’t want to be on the bench in a position where subs rarely come on?
I like him, but at the end of this season he mentally wobbled with errors on a few occasions, and he isn’t the quickest, or the tallest. I actually think we have better CBs in the squad (Beyer if he is as he was, is one). Then Parker may want to sign a big rock next to Esteve, who I suspect is not for sale, someone like a Dawson type?
I always felt he would go for the reasons boyo states above. I think Trafford will go too, but we hold the cards there.
I would guess if there is any apprehension on CJ's side it would be waiting until after this weekend to see how things work out for Strasbourg

Some people are very quick to say that he's not good enough for the PL anyway without a clue....
Many said the same when he first started this season
He's got huge potential to be a fantastic PL player and he will be a huge loss

Not sure how much there is to the rumour however I think we can come to conclusion that the club is at fault and the lad has a bad attitude

There's a good chance we won't be recruiting to try and stay up but purely for future profit.
The aim should be to get 12 points

It’s a lazy journalists option is what it is.
Not good enough. Not anymore. I’d sooner have a look at either Beyer or Ekdal before offering anything to Michael Keane.
Can anyone suggest which other PL club offers Keane a contract?
Exactly…

Re: Egan-Riley
So Chelsea have swindled us out of paying compensation money because we receive next to nothing if he goes abroad.
I can’t believe he’d rather play for Chelsea’s development side in France over PL football. I know Strasbourg had a decent season under Rosenior but they’re normally cannon fodder.

Will be a shame not to see him play for us in the PL, but good luck to him. Playing football in a different country is a fantastic opportunity, especially for someone his age.
All this about him not being tall enough etc is absolute nonsense.
Was a joy to watch him spray those passes around and he was a big part of a memorable season.

Re: Egan-Riley
Though we have a few prats as usual on here attacking anyone for having a contrary opinion, in general I have found this thread quite relaxed and pragmatic. Which should tell us a great deal.
The vast majority wish him well, applaud his efforts with us that helped get us back up, but were a little concerned about a lack of age and physicality in the backline if we had kept the defence together. Personally I would rather have Worrall starting as he adds experience and leadership. But that is simply an opinion of where I feel we may be found wanting, not CJ’s fault
As CJ found out to his despair from Kompany’s City ruthlessness, the top clubs show no loyalty and treat their players like cattle. I’m far from convinced this is the best move for him, I doubt he will ever start for Chelsea, I suspect like THB he will have a career mid table in the PL at best, like Tarky, but if CJ and his mum thinks that is best to financially secure the family I wish them the best of luck.
