Palace Fans / Fan Culture

Post by CoolClaret » Sat May 17, 2025 7:24 pm

Something that we, as a club/fanbase, need to do better at integrating holistically. Fan-led initiatives, that sort of thing.

Matt is quite well placed to comment - based out in Germany and has written a lot about fan culture both there and beyond.

(And I was his journalism tutor many moons ago!)

Unfortunately we're miles away from having something like what Palace have.

Great support, but wasn't it the same song throughout?

To be honest, I’d prefer to be in our loud, naturally passionate end in 2009 than sat amongst a load of hipsters cosplaying at being European ‘ultras’. Still glad Palace won and pleased for their normal fans.

But all that performative stuff isn’t for me. Each to their own though.

With you on this. Each to their own as you say but all very manufactured like Arsenal fans have tried to do this season.

Are they really 'cosplaying' at being European ultras, or have they developed something unique to themselves?

Their support at home is superb - far, far better than ours.

I'm not suggesting having flairs and a Burnley Tifo's either. But unique flags + having our colours in the stands would be a decent start.

There's chance of it being tinpot and a bit 'fake', but to get anything going you've got to organise - that's what a football club is and how they originated, a coming together of people sharing their views/ideas.

I’d do anything not to be like Arsenal fans to be honest. I’ve been to Palace a few times and a good away day but their atmosphere is a bit over hyped.

I like Palace and their ultras generate a good atmosphere but it is one corner of their ground. We undersell our atmosphere. We aren't consistent but when we turn up our ground is properly passionate and hostile from all sides. Millwall/Blades was better than most atmospheres generated at Palace. Would be better if we did it more often. We need to work on doing more often. Parker and the lads will need it next season.

Yeah it's just a bit too few and far between as you say. Definitely agree with the last bit!

Look at how Pompey fans made Fratton park a fortress this season, we need some of that... Being hard(er) to beat than last time in the PL and having a team we've all already bonded with will help with that...

Palace is the strongest community clubs of the London EPL clubs
My son lives in Croydon and back today and even there which is a few miles from the ground the place was awash of Palace scarves and banners from the region’s residents

You mean in recent years? You wouldn’t know a game was in some of the drab games I saw.

the recent trend of smoke flares and huge coloured banners is a straight copy of the spanish and Italian clubs fanbases.
so over here it looks like a bunch of johnny come lately types doing their best to seem sharp, it isn't .
The corporate pigswill of handing out flags looks as false at it gets, even calling them ultras is pathetic. unoriginal dross. our best bet would be to steer well clear over this childish gibberish.

England is MILES behind pretty much every major league for atmosphere. At least Palace are trying to create something, the negativity from most fan bases is so tedious, **** scared of stepping outside their comfort zone.

A fortress breached 5 times isn’t a fortress.

For a team coming up from League One that was a great effort; at home they won 11, drew 7 and lost 5 and made every game that they played at home a battle.

Pro rata equivalent in the Prem out of 19 home games would roughly be ≈ 9 wins, 6 draws, 4 losses - 33 points, I think we'd all snatch anyone's hand off for that sort of return!

Agreed Vegas, hints of jealousy at times as well. Like a lot of things people scared to do anything a bit different, so look to mock instead - bit of a defence mechanism.

Unfortunately problem is showing anything resembling passion and enthusiasm at our club potentially ends with your receiving a lengthy stadium ban.

The media and corporates adore this semi manufactured atmosphere of “ coloured flares , ( pre supllied) flag waving , synchronised “official “ songs ( no naughty words please! ) and pretendy cod euro style “ ultras “ . Though try getting said flares into the ground and you’ll be banned for life ?

I know Palace had Glad all over as a song donkeys yrs ago and they do like that vaguely homo erotic , 1930’s Germany matching clothing and hand gestures thing . All incredibly cringe for me , but they seem to enjoy so good for them and great to see a “ non super club” win the cup ,

Apparently only came about because they once played a concert in the 60's at Selhurst Park.

About as tenuous as them claiming their game against Brighton is a local derby.

Only good thing about it is it still triggers PTSD in a few Blackburn fans after their infamous play off defeat there in late 80s.
