Myself and a mate are running 52 half marathons in 52 weeks for Pendleside Hospice. We are running one a week starting on New Years Day and finishing on New Years Eve (finishing line will definitely be a pub!)

They are one of my regular Christmas donations (a family agreement to not buy presents but give to charities- great for me as I hate present-shopping). Ill also support you in this. I dont live in the area now but my dad was looked after there in his final couple of weeks and they were brilliant; well done for you efforts.

My father in law received amazing care there in his final days. Well done to you. I’m in their lottery every month. Never win a thing but I don’t care. Lady there at the time said most of their money comes from wills. It’s such a shame hospices have to be charities.
May I ask where you are doing it? I have been promising to do something for them for six years. I may well be motivated to join you on one.

Houseboy - we are doing the vast majority around the streets of Burnley. Going to try and do a few round Pendle and then we're planning on entering the manchester half marathons and marathon. If you were up for doing one we'd genuinely love you to join us.

I will have to work up to it. At my age I could end up in there. Seriously though I have said to my wife numerous times I should do something. I’d probably be looking at sometime mid year. I’m physically fit (work out four times a week a week) but running is not part of my thing. I have a target now. Cheers.

Definitely not too late to donate. We are starting on new years day and don't finish till new years eve 2025 so got a full year of fundraising.

That sounds great houseboy. Fair play to you. Whenever you feel ready let me know and we'll definitely something out. We won't be running any of them quickly so you definitely don't need to worry about that!

Good luck with this challenge. It won’t be easy but it’s for an amazing cause.


My advice would be go steady.

I’ve been running 50-70 miles a week for the past 3-4 years and was up to 70-90 miles a week from Jan to April training for the London marathon. Since then I’ve been injured with a hip, and then tibia issue and I’m only just getting back running again.

Injuries anre inevitable at my age (37) running that much but the best way I have found to avoid injury is by running the majority of the time at a very easy pace. Take it steady and make sure you get recovery in.

What an amazing thing you are attempting. I am currently laid up after an operation, but will start running again around the end of February.
We will make a donation to the hospice, and like yourself, I have raised a few thousand for them over the years, but, as I am recuperating, would I be able to do a few runs with you in the spring?
I definitely won't be able to do a half marathon just yet, but 4 or 5 miles will be fine, particularly if it's local to Burnley.

Goalkeeper - definitely! That sounds great. Honestly we would love to have people running with us throughout the year whether it is for a full half marathon or just a section of it. All support and company will be hugely appreciated!

My mate did a marathon 2 months ago and says his knee still hasn't recovered. Running basically knackers your joints up. And I heard about your dad so hope you and your bro are doing alright.

But it doesn't. All the evidence actually says the opposite of that. Also you are never too old (within reason of course) to actually start running.

I hope you are right, as I've had knee trouble. The doctors tell me that stronger legs support the knee but the actual running motion stresses the knee out.
