we might win it, and go on to win the champions league. Although stranger things have never happened.

16th or 17th appears to be enough to get into Europe.

Which was clearly the intention of UEFA expanding the competitions and qualification criteria. Imagine not having massive teams like Man U or Spurs playing in the “champions” league.
