Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
I posted elsewhere but according to some Chelsea forum the fee is £15 million plus a %age of any sell on
Seems a higher fee than was rumoured when he signed on loan

One of those you think has a 'high ceiling'. Improved all the time before his injury.

Fleming signed too apparently

Excellent news to have this confirmed. I only hope the fan base are patient with him and remember he is a player of enormous potential but untested at PL level.

I think he has an incredibly high ceiling, got the lot.
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
I think Pires finished the season a far better player than when he started and liked up well with Anthony
Hope both Pires and Humphries can up their games for this league

States on their Wikipedia pages that both Anthony & Edwards have joined permanently.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Two good left backs to start the season with both unproven at PL level but both with top potential
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
A back 4 of…
Egan-Riley NEW* Esteve Humphreys
*must be aerially dominant and threat from set pieces
…next season looks quite nice. Two capable ‘defenders’ as full backs (also adding physicality), but also both decent on the ball for progression.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
That's a back 4 Tony Pulis would be proud of. Please no.
You'll be after Pires and Roberts on the wing next
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Not a fan of full backs that can’t play on the wing, playing on the wing. I am a fan, in a league we are going to need to defend very well, and have more physicality, of having ball playing, flexible defenders playing full back (it’s why Humphreys looked really good there).
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Fair enough. It's not for me, I'd much prefer Pires there who is far more progressive, in both his passing and running. He's also a big lad with pace so don't think there's a physicality issue there.RVclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 12:23 pmNot a fan of full backs that can’t play on the wing, playing on the wing. Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Different challenges in the Prem, and we’ve got to be far better at defending than any of the last 6 abysmal efforts of promoted clubs, including ourselves. Humphreys is a better defender (including aerially, backed up by stats) and has more physicality. Get organised, get some points on the board and build from there. Of course, Pires will have a role to play.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Started off a bit shaky and being played out of position, but was incredibly consistent after that.
Steve’s natural replacement at LCB.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Good that they are announcing them separately but not sure about this constant approach of loans with a permanent option..ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 2:37 pmAs have Anthony & Edwards but it looks as though the club are going to announce them one by one which is good.
Are we not constantly kicking the can down the road with this approach. It feels like every summer we spend a huge chunk of our budget on players that in reality we're signed a year earlier.
If we hadn't gone up then you'd imagine most of our budget would have been wiped out immediately.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
I'd be interested see Humphreys perform in his preferred position of CB at some point. He's been shoe horned in at LB and has actually done really well and I'd have still picked him above Pires (who is no slouch himself) before his injury. He could be the next "revelation" a la Ben Mee or Egan-Riley and absolutely fly when moved into the centre.

Millwall wouldn't have loaned out Fleming, suppose it was get now pay later
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Why would we even consider playing Egan-Riley at right back?
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
So as I understand it we basically couldn't afford Flemming as a Championship club, so we were banking on promotion to help fund the fee. Without it we'd have had to sell a bunch of players to afford players we'd had for the previous 12 months.Wokingclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 4:10 pmThink Edwards was only if we went up.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Think its more balancing the books
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
- not sure he has the physicality for cb (in a back 4) in the PL
- played rb for the majority of his City and pro career until this season
- allows us to add a aerially dominant cb alongside Esteve, someone who can be a threat from set pieces, which neither Esteve or CJ are
- very good on the ball for progressive play still, long distance pings still in play
- adds more physicality to the back line (Roberts, for example, is quite small and weak) in what is the most physical league in the world

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Not true, Flemming was an obligation to buy regardless of the league. I’d imagine it’s more a cash flow matching exercise.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Of course but it was basically a permanent deal with no or minimal payment for 12 months. If we put it in very simplistic terms, I think it's pretty likely that we were struggling to stump up the cash for him because of the signings of Esteve and Tresor which had been loan to permanents from the season before. We'd basically committed to about 25 million in transfer fees just on those 2 as a Championship club.
If Esteve had flopped as well as Tresor then we could have been in trouble financially imo
Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
I'm presuming you didn't go to Wolves to watch him at right back? It was an awful performance.RVclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 4:23 pm- not sure he has the physicality for cb (in a back 4) in the PL

At what points of his pro career has he spent the majority at right back? He played a couple of games for Hibs and PSV at right back the rest of his career has been at centre back.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
I believe flemming was like that to get deal done before deadline, hence helicopter. Quicker and easier to file a loan than a permanent.

Was always a loan and always with the obligation irrespective of which division we would be in.Holtyclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 4:45 pmI believe flemming was like that to get deal done before deadline, hence helicopter. Quicker and easier to file a loan than a permanent.

Re: ARTICLE: Humphreys permanent signing confirmed
Some, not all, will have the obligation triggered by various things (number of appearances, league position, promotion, etc) so there's a try before you buy element.Goliath wrote: ↑Wed May 21, 2025 3:05 pmGood that they are announcing them separately but not sure about this constant approach of loans with a permanent option..

In terms of FFP and the accounts, if it is a straight obligation to buy after the loan then the transfer hits the accounts when the loan starts.
https://viewpoint.pwc.com/dt/uk/en/pwc/ ... ation.html
If it is a loan with a conditional obligation then you have to assess how likely that it is those conditions will be hit as to how it is treated.
Obviously cashflow may not follow this treatment.
