Playing music on public transport

The other day I went nuts at someone on the metro (I don't live in the UK). It was at night and not many people in the carriage and I asked him first to please use earphones, as the poster above his head said. He said he didn't have any. I then said can you turn it off then. He said 'why should I?' So I went mad, verbally. A lot of effing and jeffing, not about him but 'why should we have to effing listen to your effing music etc.' I was quite aggressive towards him through pointing and language, although a few feet away. I've never been in a fight and rarely raise my voice. I'm not happy with how I handled it but it had been coming. For months and months.

I don't know what to do about it and I don't know how to handle these situations. It's beyond a pet hate for me. I see it as arrogance and ignorance of other people to play music like this, but then I was also ignorant of everyone else the other day. I've contacted the metro company in the past to say something should be done. But I don't know what can be done. Everyone I speak to agrees it's bad but I've never seen anyone else ask people to stop doing it. I've asked several times but not always as it's so frequent and I'm so exhausted with it. I know if I ask the wrong person I could have problems but it infuriates me so much, I don't know why. I wasn't right to go mad but what can be done? Do I have to accept this as part of society now?

I’ll be honest I find myself doing most things these days based on when I will encounter the least number of arrogant and ignorant people, from driving to shopping, even walking the dogs. It seems that consideration is an old fashioned idea in a world where most people seem to think of ‘self’ first and last.

I was on the train In Athens and some girl in front of me had this Andrew Tate stuff on ,like don't tell me what to do and so on .
I just stuck me head and took my hearing aid out .

Yep, the music is always awful and often it's just people scrolling through social media playing videos etc.

I've tried the headphones thing but as mentioned, why should I have to ? I usually do anyway but like the other day I wasn't on my own so I wasn't going to use them.

The time before I'd asked someone to use earphones who was just listening to the radio she said 'no I won't' and then went on to explain how she was doing us a favour because they were talking about the news on the radio channel so I was being informed and it was useful for me. I'm getting annoyed just writing about it!

A lot of people don't seem to understand why seemingly trivial matters like this are so important.

The Lib Dems had the right kind of idea with this but it's already against the law. We don't need new laws - we need proper enforcement of existing laws until they return to being social norms.

In my local last night, and the couple at the next table thought it appropriate to make a couple of video calls to mates, with it all on speaker mode so the whole pub could hear. Soon got told by me to turn it down. But it’s my mate in Australia, was the excuse. Wouldn’t mind but there’s a large beer garden outside that was virtually empty. Some people are born selfish.

Society has completely changed.

The norms have gone and are likely to get worse.

Me, me, me, look at me, I'm interesting. Even in pubs there are groups of people shouting so they can be heard whilst posting their crap on social media.

I regularly use public transport and the stuff I have witnessed is beyond belief. Teenage lasses taking 'selfies' of their female parts to post online was probably the worst.

For me almost as bad as playing music are the continuous automated announcements on my local train journey to work every morning. There are 8 stops on a twenty minute journey. There are sometimes up to 40 announcements during this short journey. For every stop we have. Welcome aboard this train, This train is stopping at...., The next stop is .. we are now approaching...When alighting the train mind the gap.... If you see something see it say it sort it.....
It completely ruins the journey experience for me. I have written to the train company and complained. They have said they need to do it for sight impaired people. I get that some announcements are necessary but I highlighted this was massive overkill. I suggested it would be preferable to have the guard make some of the announcements, they don't do a lot else This got no reply.
I I tend to keep trying with the complaints to see if they can adjust this sensory overload.

If you think its bad on a bus you should try being on a hospital ward at 2am when you haven't slept for 2 days and 2 or 3 are listening to different things at once.

My family went out for a meal at an Indian restaurant last night. Sat a few tables away was a youngish couple with a boy of about 4 or 5, they had finished their meals and were having a drink. The little lad was watching a film on his laptop with the volume turned right up. The restaurant is very large and it was very busy, so there was plenty of background noise. Nevertheless everyone within about 12 feet could clearly hear the film he was watching. In addition and unsurprisingly, the couple were both on their mobiles.

It really grinds my gears how oblivious some people are to common courtesy and decency.

I hate music or other noise being imposed on me.
For me,it’s the equivalent to goal music or music played upto kick off, at half time and full time while watching footy.
Prime example of that was the music at Wembley yesterday during and after the play off final. So intrusive and unnecessary.

I've reached an age where I find anything that intrudes on my dissatisfaction with everything - is annoying.

I often think of that film where Michael Douglass goes into Maccy D's and pulls out a shotgun and shoots the place up because he wants a breakfast at 11:31 and it finishes at 11:30.

I've reached an age where I think that is a reasonable response to the situation. And thank to the WokeyBobs I'd probably get away with it given the police are so busy arresting people for Tweets.

While I look on some of the comments on this thread and think some of the things are mildly irritant. There are also other situations in which I can't help but feel people are overreacting.

Ultimately, they are are all third world problems and if they are your biggest stressers, then count yourself lucky.

I don't know what to do about it and I don't know how to handle these situations. It's beyond a pet hate for me. Sounds as though you were fortunate that your aggressive behaviour was not filmed by another passenger as many people have found themselves in hot water over situations such as you describe.
Perhaps leaving the train at the next station and moving to the next carriage is an option worth considering if you are struggling to control your anger in the future?
