I never mentioned Chapman. He seems more interested in American Football!

Re: MOTD - replacing Gary Linaker
time was when with only 2 terrestrial channels doing football, you knew where you stood, BBC or ITV.
thesedays all the pundits seem to float about , look at troy deeney, he pops up on motd, talk sport, tnt, sky,
no idea who his agent is but he must be good.
that dull trio of shearer linekar richards had ran its course. loads of silly little add ons featured with them nattering on about top five defenders or some such nonsense, just padding out the formats.
I still watch motd, but chapman as has been mentioned has his heart in golf, and stat obsessed american sport.
BBC keep on with those ridiculous stat captions which have no bearing whatsoever to most viewers.
Also, he talks a good game, but if you actually listen hard, he doesnt really say much with any insight.
Kelly Cates was very good, but she was another who disappeared into the ether. channel hopping to suit her career.
danny murphy , okayish, but the ex pro, golf stuff grates a bit. And he picks up cheques from the commercial channels.
They need a blend of loyal and knowledgable presenters that audiences trust to present MOTD.

Re: MOTD - replacing Gary Linaker
When Des Lynam presented the hour long MOTD. 50 minutes of the show was football, two 20 minute highlights, 10 minutes of goals from the other division one games. Then we would discuss what we’d seen, not be told what our opinion should be.wilks_bfc wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 10:58 amExactly this
Des Lynam never played and nobody seemed to be bothered about him presenting MOTD
Presenters are there to generate the conversation and keep the programme flowing
The analysts/summarisers are there to provide the insight, and those are the ones that need to be the ones that have played the game

Thats the point though, its a different world from 25 years ago when Lynam last hosted MOTD** Then it was pretty much the only option. There has been a deliberate shift in approach by MOTD and sky. Broadcasters know that everyone can watch the coverage either live or on their phones straight after the game. Therefore they've moved towards more analysis as an extra selling point for the programme. Sky on Monday night football have taken it to the nth degree, MOTD less-so, but the principal is the same.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 10:45 pmWhen Des Lynam presented the hour long MOTD. 50 minutes of the show was football, two 20 minute highlights, 10 minutes of goals from the other division one games. **even then, I'm pretty sure Jimmy hill and Alan Hansen didn't hold back on giving their opinions....

If you’re watching MOTD now and think you’re being told what your opinion should be I think the problem is yours, not the programme’s.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 10:45 pmWhen Des Lynam presented the hour long MOTD. 50 minutes of the show was football, two 20 minute highlights, 10 minutes of goals from the other division one games.
