Lancs got him in at Haslingden to qualify with FArokh Engineer taking the one international place that came into being in 1968. I saw him play for Hasilngden at Burnley and he became the first person I ever saw hit a 6 into the football ground and not only that he did it three times in one over off Jack Schofield. Admittedly they were building the new cricket field stand and all through went straight through the building work.

Was always strange going to a one day game at Lancs. Everyone seemed to want us to lose our first two wickets so he could get in.

Went to CH Lloyd's last final when he was out for a low score and we lost. People always mentioned his batting but his fielding was also a joy to watch. Swooping in from cover - no quick singles there. Didn't he also bowl a bit of spin?

Pretty gentle medium pace if I recall correctly. As you say like a gazelle around the cover area and never seemed to put anything down. A joy to watch him in action back then. Think they may call his batting today as 'having long levers' but I just saw it as timing and hitting the ball hard.

You are right Silky it was trundle medium pace with a short run up. Dibbly Dobblies as his namesake David used to call them.

Clive had 114 first class wickets at 36 each. Haslingden were lucky to have him and then Dennis Lillee as professionals in the space of a few seasons. Another odi on today, but it is England v West Indies ladies. England batting first 29-0 off 7.

Clive's first game for Haslingden, was away at Enfield and the story was he'd only touched down at Manchester Airport that morning. Although I was there, I don't remember much about the game, other than being impressed with our new pro. As mentioned earlier his fielding was something else, with a flicked wrist throw that always landed just over the bails.
Think he might have got a hundred as well. 110 rings a bell.

I also recall that on Sundays, Clive often played for The International Cavaliers. Basically an All Stars X1 against the counties, a 40 over game live on TV, BBC2 I think.
One game at Edgbaston, Billy Ibadulla played a forward defensive shot and the ball firmly struck and middled, went straight to Clive in the covers. Clive whipped it back in so quickly and accurately that Ibadulla hadn't time to get back inside his crease. Ibadulla had only moved forward two steps from his forward momentum. Hadn't looked for a run, just two steps forward but couldn't take two steps back before his bails were off.

Although Haslingden’s first game was due to be against Burnley, unsure if he was due to play in that but pros tended to arrive before the season back then.

My recollection of seeing Clive play was at Rawtenstall v Haslingden, my grandad took me on......just remember the windows in Ilex Mill opposite being peppered !
I suppose none of the Lancashire League grounds were big enough when the Big man got going !

Jack Schofield is a good friend of mine. He played for Burnley and then umpired for years. I haven’t seen him in nearly two years since he left Burnley to live with his daughter near Settle. His wife Hazel was struggling health wise. He will be 93 now if he’s still with us.

Yes. He was quick. Very quick. Don't think there was any great structure or thought put into his bowling except for making a batsman jump around in his crease
Heard of a story involving a youngish, promising batsman facing him in a double header played over a Bank Holiday. His first delivery completely demolished the young man's three stumps. Apparently that evening said batman's dad offered his son some advice; take a different guard and remember to play straight, play down the line. Following day he faced Gilchrist again, remembered everything his dad suggested and was walking back to the pavilion after the first delivery watching the wi ketkeeper picking up various items of what were the wickets he'd been trying to protect. No prisoners for Roy.

He had a screw loose but he was very quick.

Pulled a stump out of the ground and smacked Ces Abrahams over the head with it during a Central Lancs League game and he branded his wife with a hot iron. Played for Bacup & Lowerhouse in the Lancs League but one to steer well clear of.

The judge said to him in court after sentencing him following an attack on his wife: “I hate to think English sport has sunk so far that brutes will be tolerated because they are good at games."

The stump incident was against Leslie Warburton at Littleboro (I was there) but there may have been others. A fiery little bowler, a firecracker who bowled bouncers and beamers.

Sadly passed away in his 60s with Parkinson's Disease.

If it was against Warwickshire it was, as I recall, pretty surreal.

Everyone knew it was his last final and he got a standing ovation including all Warwicks fans all the way to the wicket.

He was then out first ball.

And got a more confused, low-key standing ovation on his return to the pavillion.

It was a real shame it ended like that. He was ungainly, he didn't look like a sportsman at all and then we he started batting he was electric.

He was a gentleman and one of the best batsmen in the history of the game.

The one you refer to was in 1986. He was out fourth ball without troubling the scorers. To play him in that final, Lancs had to leave out Patrick Patterson. It backfired and we were beaten easily. I spent that day watching Burnley lose 2-0 at Hereford.

Me and Peter once had a bit of a set to at Saint Ambrose (as was) year 9 following a football, town team trial.
Not sure what triggered him. Can't even remember if I'd made a save from him during the game or not.
Julia, his girlfriend and eventual wife, was in our class at school, but I think it was only the second or third time Peter and I had met, so there was no history.
When I asked some of the other lads, they just said words to the effect that it didn't take much to set Pete off.

He was more of a medium pacer as i remember........bad back put an end to it.

Came to Haslingden as an occasional off spinner, but as the wickets were so slow decided to go down the medium pacer route eventually.
