I'm not sure what Bruno Fernandes was offered to leave Utd and go to Ali Saudi, but it was obviously eye-watering.

KDB should go out there, he's earned it. £1m per week is something nobody can ignore...

£80k a week for Brownhill would seem crazy on the face of it, but if you factor in paying £10-20m for a replacement player and a salary of c£40k a week it makes a little more sense. I hope he stays.

Surely the answer to out of contract players such as Brownhill potentially disrupting a club's salary scale is to pay a salary consistent with all the other players, plus a separate 'signing fee' which is payable over the duration of the contact, or paid off as with a 'sell on fee' should you later sell him. So wages plus fee = £80k/week
He is one of our most important senior pros and the club captain. Like any job, you don't get paid just for the job you do, but how you do it and how much people value you. Doesn't mean everyone else gets £80k a week.

I have no idea what we're offering Brownhill or anyone else (although 80k a week seems toppish to me), but I would be wary about reading too much into headline figures for either wages or transfer fees given how much can be performance related. My guess is that a significant proportion of whatever package Brownhill has been offered/agreed is performance related - be it appearance and win related, or survival/ promotion bonuses.

We could possibly get 100 million for Trafford and Steve.

I don’t think the club would be able to turn this down.
I doubt that TBH.

The difference is that Brownhill isn't a £20 million player as he's treading water at the level we are now at. He's likely to struggle in the majority of games

It may be ambitious, but at some point the club really need to hold on to our star young players until there’s a bidding war and we have multiple top teams interested so we get top dollar.

£60m for Olise, Cunha, etc, not to mention what Chelsea staffed on Brighton players, shows there’s big money available.

I’m not saying we’ve sold badly in the past, we’ve done very well, but the market has moved on and big, big money is available for good young players.

Establishing ourselves in the Premier League first would help a lot though.

As will most of our squad next season
But, would you get a player with the experience of Brownhill for £5m - I doubt it
His father was overheard saying at a recent local game, that his agent was touting £5m signing on fee plus £75k per week to any interested clubs

£80k a week for Josh is crazy, but shows the market we're in, and I can't imagine it doesn't come with the caveat that his wage drops significantly if we get relegated. I like him a lot so hope he signs. I think we're a better side with him in the team, and there's no doubt he's a very positive influence around the club. Hopefully his age, previous PL experience, and Parker's tactics will pay dividends for us come September.

Esteve has just signed a 4 year deal with us why should we sell for less?
we may find a suitable replacement to be very expensive.
Because Esteve isn’t worth £50M.

I appreciate transfers fees are ever increasing, but £50M would put Esteve at the 14th most expensive defender of all time.

I think Crosspool has it right. £35-£40M, dependent on how it is structured, is far more realistic and is still a huge profit that fits our business model.

I don’t get where this prevailing thought comes from that unless we slap a hugely ridiculous fee onto a player, then somehow we’ve let them go for nothing.

By and large over the last 10+ years our transfer business has been very good. Why not just trust the club to get the best possible deal we can, because they’ve proven to be able to do that more often than not.

Very true. And most players that have left 'on the cheap' was mainly down to contract clauses (which had we not allowed to be inserted, said player wouldn't have signed in the first place).

He's not, but £20m in this market almost certainly doesn't buy you a Premier League quality player either unless you get lucky. Coming off the back of the season Josh has had, he may have more impact this season than his last at this level.

The last thing we can afford is signing unfit players. I'd rather the owners pay most of the debt off with the PL riches and we get younger lads in for the future than waste money on players like Gomez

The idea of putting a sky high valuation on players such as Esteve is because the club wants him to stay rather than sign for another team.
If a club is willing or stupid enough to match the valuation it leaves us in a much stronger position to sign a suitable replacement.
Anyone know if there's any truth in the rumour that Brownhill has accepted Everton's offer ? I read on here a couple of weeks ago that he'd already signed a new contract with us

We're going to need to take some risks to stay up. There's surely no doubting the quality of Joe Gomez so the gamble is on his fitness/availability. Those risks will likely be a mixture of untested quality and questionable fitness. I really can't see it because I think he will be highly sought after but I would be chuffed if we signed him.

What's probably exciting the potential market is his goals. Previous incarnations of Brownhill at this level have, as some have mentioned, been borderline/passable.

It may be late in his career, but he might have found his best position. 2nd top scorer in the league and with assists, contributing 38% of our goals this season ain't bad at all.

Arriving late in the box to score like he has is a pretty rare skill, and hes incredible at it. If he can deliver 5-10 goals Inc the odd assist he's well worth the money being touted. I personally don't see why he wouldn't do that again if given a similar role in a better side.

There is nothing stopping the club announcing Brownhill has signed a new contract, unless he hasn't done - same for CJ. I have no inside knowledge on this but I am highly pessimistic that either are staying.

I agree on the announcement, that’s strange if they have signed, but also strange things have gone quiet regarding other clubs signing them too.

When you consider the price to get Kerkez out of Bournemouth to Liverpool is rumoured to be around 40 million I think it's unrealistic we get anything north of 30 for Steve tbh (and I think 30 is a push)

The annual wage bill last time we were in the Premier League tells its own story.
The annual wage bill in the last accounts was similar to the peak wage bill under Dyche.

Tarks and Mee were the best paid players by all accounts but we had a much smaller squad back then and we were also not spending what we are now in the transfer market.

The only story the last annual wage bill tells is what happens when you have going on for 40 players on your books.

Joe Gomez is better (by far) than either of our current CB’s. He’s a powerful, talented and versatile defender.

Fitness aside, he’d be our first choice in the Premier League.

Its another reason we need to trim the squad . Far too many players picking up a good wage for little action, through no fault of their own I'll add. It shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

Exactly what I thought.
I'd be surprised (and delighted) if he was willing to play for us. £20m ish would seem a great price for a proven Premier League player.

That Messi lad was hardly a beanpole...... Joking aside i think physical stature for midfielders can be overstated as a factor. If they are skillful enough, they are big enough
I think now you have to be very talented technically to make it, if you don’t have the physicality, in the Prem, it’s just where it’s gone over recent years.

N'Golo Kante at his peak would walk into any PL side.
Mind you, so would Paul Scholes.
Kante, while small, was an incredible athlete. Probably one of the quickest, most athletic midfielders the Prem has seen.

A fit Gomez walks into our best team, with his eyes closed. However, given his injury record, the fee and other clubs linked, it’s a complete myth of a link.

The key to a successful market this summer is to prey on France. Their TV deal is collapsing which will financially smash the top division clubs, yet alone those lower down. There’s going to be some real bargains to be had there. Having got Esteve and been linked heavily with Kouyate for ages, as well as getting in Green etc, you’d like to think it’s a market we are heavily keeping an eye on. Losing Esteve would be a blow, but £10 million of the £30+ million fee would go a long way for a replacement.

Personally love brownhill. Think he epitomises this squad and embodies what it means to play for and represent Burnley. Hes had the season of his life. And it would cost a lot to replace him. But even with that all said. We cannot afford to pay him £80k a week. Granted it would cost us a lot to replace him. It’s the principle of having a player of his ilk on £80k a week.

Could he get it elsewhere? Almost certainly.
Would it cost us more in the grand scheme to replace him? Probably.

But I think we need to be very cautious before we start raising our salaries to that sort of figure.

The best bet would be to wrap it into a signing on and staying up based incentive.

But he’s not proven at this level he is worth that. He’s entering his 30s this calendar year.

If he’s demanding / able to get that. I’d wish him well. And look at a loan player, use what we have (Ramsey / Amdouni) and / or look outside the box - youth, foreign markets.

That being said. We need to keep a solid core. Particularly of the British, experienced players.

Fao Cooclaret
Joe Gomez maybe a top defender but it's his injury record that's a massive red flag.Remember football is all about opinions .You rate him I don't.

If you could bring in Tanganga and Doyle for such low fees o think that’d be good business. Both for the homegrown quota. In the grand scheme of things that’s very cheap for two players who would make our squad stronger .

Doyle to replace Shelvey for £3m would be a no brainer for me.

Tanganga as a centre half/right full back option. Leaving funds elsewhere for more marquee signings

Seems like we are looking at Joe Gomez, this is a transfer link i thought id never hear, same agent as Edwards
Not good enough, not strong enough, injury prone but most of all on too much money,
Too expensive at £25m
