I'll buy you a new shed bill if any club pays 50 million for Steve

Disappointing. I wonder how much SP wanted to keep him.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
Parker has referred to players refusing to play and forcing moves prior to Sunderland. Given O’Shea left that day or the day after its highly probable he was one.

I'd rather have the cash. Have you any idea how much a waterside property (even a shed) would cost down here?

A player who insists on a £1.2m release sounds pretty eager to leave too.
Plus there's plenty of Chinese whispers and a distinct lack of facts around his exit.
A surprising number of players who refused to play for us in the championship played for us in the championship in those first few games.

Good riddance if he doesn't want to repay us with a season in the PL. It now paves the way for the return of leader, legend, captain Ben Mee.

Perhaps we are a little hasty in writing Worrall off. He has the experience we need. But I'd like us to go for Tanganga as well.boyyanno wrote: ↑Wed Jun 11, 2025 6:49 pmI don't know wether I believe what has been written about him to be honest or what the truth of the story is, I've based this more on the fact that I think he's a decent fit for us in terms of level (probably lower PL quality but better than Champ), he's got a good ariel threat which we need, good experience and likely wouldn't break the bank and he's a decent age.
.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
**** news, but not surprising the longer it went on. I’m a bit surprised he’s passed up the opportunity of playing in the Premier League, though, if not with us then with another club.
Hopefully Beyer can step in.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
I don’t really think those two are comparable. There’s a difference between an agreed contractual release clause (for example I never had an issue with Weghorst leaving first time as there was clearly an agreement he wouldn’t play in the Champ) and someone pushing to jump ship despite no said agreement.aggi wrote: ↑Wed Jun 11, 2025 7:20 pmA player who insists on a £1.2m release sounds pretty eager to leave too.

I’ll go with Matt Williams’ word on that one.

For anyone doubting the O'Shea stuff. Go and find the press conference where Parker confirms he's leaving, it says it all.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
I kind of suspect his mind was made up this time last year when he seemed to be going absolutely nowhere with us and was being loaned out and nobody at the club seemed to rate him very highly. If he'd left last summer most people would have said "Egan who??". He then had a brilliant "breakthrough" season, but even that was more by pure accident than design and by the time the club realised they had a genuine asset worth keeping the die had been cast. He was brilliant in the promotion push and I'd have liked to see him stay and see how he shaped up at PL level, but it's not a given that he could have made that leap. Anyway, I honestly don't think we'd have got promoted without him and I wish him all the best.
Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
If it's the poster I think you're referring to, his track record is abysmal. I remember him all over this place two years ago with news that Tella was signing permanently. Lately it's been Egan-Riley and Brownhill definitely renewing. Lol.

Where can I find the Matt Williams word? Can’t find anything on a Google search.RVclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 11, 2025 7:23 pmI don’t really think those two are comparable. I’ll go with Matt Williams’ word on that one.
Watched 15 secs of the Parker video on O’Shea departure, it reflects a manager deflated because he’s losing his first choice CH in a week when so many players were leaving, Vitinho, JBG, Berge etc

I'd be happy to go with Matt Williams' word if you can point me in the direction of where he said it first hand.RVclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 11, 2025 7:23 pmI don’t really think those two are comparable. It was always very unlikely he'd sign, just as it is with Brownhill. At least with Steve and Trafford they are under contract.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
There appears to be some confusion which French team he’s signed for, if it’s Marseilles it’s a good move for CJ. Ligue 1 is decent quality, nice climate, not as physically demanding as PL. He’ll be playing CL football next season and probably a hefty pay raise considering he wouldn’t have made much at Burnley, relatively speaking. He’s only 22, plenty of time to improve his game and more than likely come back to England in a couple years. I can see him developing into a defensive midfielder considering his ball skills and as some have mentioned on here, possibly not tall enough for a top level PL centre back.
Good luck to him, what’s not to like?

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
I did say in the transfer thread that my acquaintance in Manchester had heard he'd signed up with us so this is incredibly disappointing. He also said he'd have been one of our highest earners on a long term contract so it does look like we tried our very best and it must have been a close call for it to drag on this long.
A real shame, but whilst he's an important player there is still only Esteve for me that is irreplaceable so if we can find an adequate replacement or we can get Beyer back into some form in a defence that is well drilled and organised I don't think this makes it much more of an uphill battle that it already is.

It’s not on film, obviously, so that’s not possible. This lad has posted videos of Williams speaking at events, as he seems to be in that business / corporate group, and comes across as believable:

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
Not a perfect scenario when a first team player leaves for nothing, but as others have said " he owes us nothing " due to us getting promoted.
I also think it's a backwards step for him going to France, but that may be his only logical option for a 22 Yr old centre half.

Disappointing he’s gone, but he contributed massively to a great season. I’ll miss those long diagonal passes.

You don’t think we offered him the most we could/think he’s worth?
Can’t do much more than that. No massive loss, it’s his choice.
Do you think Williams is involved in membership schemes (that quite a few fans got real benefit from).

Matt Williams definitely said that.
Whether he was embellishing the truth a bit for a good story, who knows but as someone else has said, listen to Parker’s press conference when he left. Says it all. He isn’t coming back.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
I suspect he might. He’s developing, and developed with us. From a centre half who looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights when he broke into the side, to one of the first names on the team sheet when the season ended, he improved massively. Will he continue to improve enough to end up at Chelsea (which will be the main reason he’s gone to Strasbourg), no.agreenwood wrote: ↑Wed Jun 11, 2025 6:14 pmAll the best to him.
I hope he doesn’t come to regret it.
Whilst I don’t think he is massively overrated as suggested earlier, neither do I think he’s something special. Beyer and Ekdal are both his defensive equal from what I’ve seen.
Losing Esteve would be catastrophic, losing CJ… ah well.

Re: ARTICLE:Egan-Riley leaves Burnley
Can hardly complain when a player is lured by a club the size of Marseille.
CJ was excellent last season, out of nowhere really. Personally, I thought he might be found wanting at Premier League level - didn’t think he quite had the pace nor the physical presence to dominate at that level. So, if we can replace him appropriately within budget, it might work out for the best.
Absolutely no hard feelings though. He had a brilliant season in an amazing record setting defence and he leaves with my best wishes.
