Seems like we are holding out for a number ‘well in excess of £30m’ for Trafford:

https://x.com/lukeedwardstele/status/19 ... 50851?s=46
and so we should, otherwise we may well end up looking like fools further down the line.

I don't think you can compare a season in the Championship playing for a team that only concedes 16 goals is the same as playing in the PL. He looked to have improved significantly but you just aren't under the same pressure in the Championship.

Course you would probably be under less pressure at a top PL club than a club like Burnley as a keeper. I think he recognised as top potential because of his age and his ability to progress as much as anything else.

Newcastle need an English quota for Champions League. That obviously does not impact the current #1, but plays a part for the squad.

Mail says 40m - Deal not close.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... fford.html
For £40m and us reinvesting that money in areas needed (Striker, centre mid, full back / renewing contracts of CJER, JB) and bringing in an established goalkeeper I would be very happy with this. (For all parties).

The reality is that at some point JT goes. This would be close to a very good deal for all three parties!

35m and I’d be seriously tempted at that point. If that 35m could get the below for example it would be great business. Before anyone jumps in, I’m not saying we have been linked with those players I’m just using it as a basic example.

As Nick Pope is their established keeper, Trafford must know he's likely to spend pretty much all of next season on the bench (aside from cup games, injuries etc.)

Neither will be happy to sit on the bench, could turn out to be a very tricky game if Howe does manage to pull the Trafford deal off, which I doubt. Imagine the fan's response, having a £40m signing sat on the bench.

There's been rumours about Howe wanting to replace Pope for years. I think it's bound to happen sooner rather than later.

The standard of GK's in the PL is at an all time high, with the majority of clubs having two or more absolutely talented keepers. The more this progresses, and with a high price ticket Trafford seems to have, the more I think it will be beneficial for Trafford to stay with us. Subject to injury, he is likely to play every league game, and the whole football world will see what a talent he is, then maybe in 12 months he can pick his club when his value might be even higher. At present its not a given he can walk into any PL team. It also saves us shelling out on a GK and we already know we have a great keeper who our defence are at ease with

Do they still make creosote? It's foul stuff!!
Yes, but only for sale/use by commercial buyers such as farmers, otherwise it's 'creoCote' rather than creoSote.

Pope wasn't that great last season. If they spend that much on Trafford he isn't going to be a backup.

I see your point warks but I see it the other way. Trafford has always been seen as an investment by the club and I would expect them to accept an offer before the start of the season if it agrees with their valuation. I totally agree with you about the vast number of talented goalkeepers available and I would add that there is a good chance we could replace Trafford and not be at any greater disadvantage.
Now is the time to cash in for me even if it would be disappointing.

Don’t have an issue with him leaving if they meet the clubs valuation but I see a new Burnley here playing hardball on the deal they expect

The other factor to consider with Trafford is that he is highly regarded by Tuchel - who it would appear sees him as a future number one especially given his age

Tuchel has said he prefers his players to be involved in European club football and there's a World Cup on the horizon

Much as it would be sad to see such a quality goalkeeper leave this looks like the best opportunity we are going to get to maximise our return on him - presuming that's what the club want to do

Humphreys is predominantly a left sided defender.

So would think we would be looking for a right sided central defender to replace CJ.

Someone like Tanganga of Millwall

I think CJER will be more disappointed in France next season if things don't work out, i certainly think he stepped up last season but i think he is not realising the others around him as in Esteve Roberts Humphries/Pires and Trafford also helped him look even better, time will tell but a brave move in my opinion

Maybe he doesn't fancy playing in the Premier League. Ligue 1 is about halfway between the Premier League and the Championship.

I suspect it's not so much him not fancying playing in the PL, more that he does fancy playing in the Champions League for a huge club in front of 60,000+ every week.
