Chris Wilder gone …..

Post by Holtyclaret » Thu Jun 12, 2025 9:58 am

By all accounts and their fanbase very much split on Dyche being his replacement (if it plays out that way).

I heard this rumour from several Blades fans yesterday. Felt like it had legs.

I work in Sheffield and a lot of my colleagues are Blades - none of them want him to leave and are shocked it’s even being suggested let alone seemingly now confirmed.

Lets not forget, whatever you think of him, they’ve only not gone up because of how good us and Leeds were on 100 points.

Blades ramble doing a live on it, Wilder really is marmite and a good section of their fans are gutted.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens, some very good players that might want out.

Absolutely stupid decision. They’d better have somebody very good lined up or this’ll see them fall in to obscurity.

If this is true then it's a crazy decision in my view. As jedi_master says, they only stayed down because of two clubs getting 100 points.

I suspect Carrick will be considered. With Dyche he still believes he has earned the right for another chance in the PL, but I personally feel he would be better starting again at a club like Sheff Utd or Leicester, rebuilding the teams and going up with them as he did with Burnley about 11 years ago

It'd certainly be a gamble. You get two seasons to get back up before you become a Championship landfill club. So next season is their last chance, and he's shown he can do it previously.

They were a bit unlucky with those injuries to Souttar and Arblaster.

If he's 'sacked' then it's the sort of decision that comes back and bites a club on the backside with a mid-table finish next season.

An odd decision, if true, given that they have already started preparations for next season by identifying and bringing in transfer targets.
But hey, this is the football merry go round so nothing should surprise.

Interestingly, Sheffield United made their first summer signing yesterday with Ehije Ukaki arriving having been indentified by the owners COH Sports AI driven recruitment model.

They signed two young players using the same method in January but the Sheffield Star claims they have been seldom seen since.

Wilder said earlier in the season to ‘shove the data where you want to shove your data’ when his team were criticised for picking up points but not playing well (according to the data). It’s no surprise that he and the new data driven owners might not share the same vision.

A lot of people are easily led and mistakenly take AI as gospel.

I’m not shocked if true. With BBD, Moore, Brewster, Campbell, Cannon & Rak-Sakyi available up front and Hamer, O’Hare and Davies playing behind them they should have been able to get more tight games over the line. Both DL and ourselves did the double on them. He spunked a lot of money to not get the job done.
I don't agree with sacking managers willy-nilly but they have done it before.

But when two other sides get a hundred points it's hard to say they should have done far more. They would have gone up in any other season.

Obviously the one failing was in the play-off final where they should have scored quite a few goals.

Suspect he might not be too bothered getting sacked after signing a player he and the owners had likely never heard of based on AI. Not a positive sign of things to come.

I think Wilder did a superb job last season, certainly up until January. He got a team who weren't especially fancied into the promotion picture with a string of astute, cheap signings and by promoting some promising young players (and despite injury to their best young talent).

The business they did in January seemed a little scattergun and I'm not sure they were ever quite as cohesive again, and there's no question that the intensity of the situation, given his own personal investment as a supporter, seemed to get a bit much for him towards the end. Perhaps that was the real question for him and the board - whether he could manage that without it becoming too much whenever the tough got going.

If he goes, Dyche would be a very good fit for that job and whilst they have players that others (including us) might covet, you'd expect them to be strong again next season.

Am I the only one not shocked?

He is unstable - especially when the pressure is on. And when we were heading into the business end of the season, it was obvious who was the most measured - Parker and Farke. This translated onto the pitch and ultimately in Sheffs case - the play offs!

The madness of those three games they lost in a week showed his character when the chips are down. That coupled with the transfer strategy / system of trying to shoehorn 5 or 6 strikers into a cohesive team.

Dyche would be ideal for them. I just dont know whether its a move Dyche should make. But he has less options than ever at the top table, and he needs to pick something reasonably quickly. Sheff Utd, with pre season ahead of them strikes me as a good opportunity for him and a club that would be a good fit for him!

Perfect for Dyche as long as he has some say in transfers etc. I know some Sheff U supporters don’t want him due to his style of play, but as I told someone yesterday if by playing 442 he gets you promoted would you complain then.

Struggling PL Club or Rangers / Celtic for me .... shouldn't take a job in the championship unless it's a relegated strong PL side with backing ....

He worked wonders for us and did what was asked of him at Everton

It depends on his hunger to get managing again & the geographical location I guess. He's still a good manager no doubt with the right club but it's past the point where he's going to be in heavy demand & I don't think some opportunities can be brazenly dismissed.

Absolutely spot on.
Wilder is , undoubtedly, an excellent Championship manager and especially of "his" team, Sheffield United
And therein lies the problem. As we saw after his crass celebration of beating Sheffield United and his embarrassing exhibition at Plymouth ,done solely to ingratiate himself with the fan base, the bloke hasn't got the self control, dignity or respect for others that is needed.
OK , if things are going well you can maybe get away with being a prick but I think particularly in that disastrous week of three losses and the ultimate implosion at Wembley (again) , it became obvious he can't cope with pressure and that filtered through to the players.

Not doubting that he did a decent job last season. But you can’t say the only reason they didn’t get promoted is because two teams got 100 points, when each of those teams took 6 of those points from Sheff Utd.

I gather that the uncertainty over Wilder’s position rests on the outcome of a board meeting later on today or this evening. Seems to be a lot of speculation but no concrete decision.

The season doesn't effectively start for a couple of months or thereabouts. Plenty of time especially if they don't expect massive changes to be happening. It's a falsehood myth that people need to be instantly replaced fair enough if the seasons ongoing.

Arsenal
Villa
Brentford
Bournemouth
Brighton
Burnley
Chelsea
Palace
Everton
Fulham
Leeds
Liverpool
City
Utd
Newcastle
Forest
Sunderland
Spurs
West Ham
Wolves

which of them is he getting?

Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd, City, Liverpool, Spurs. - Never in a million years
Villa, Newcastle - nah
Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth, Fulham - not a chance, not even if they are desperate to stay up
West Ham, highly unlikely but they have enjoyed success under Moyes and I can see a link there and their fans being receptive to it. But unlikely.
Palace - that ship has sailed (maybe if they are in big trouble).
Sunderland - maybe if they are desperate but can't see it.
Leeds - they will have ideas above him but they did go for big Sam last time they were going down.
Everton - Obviously not.

That leaves us. Wolves. And Forest.

Wolves, very much doubt it. Which basically means unless Forest have a bad year again and are adrift and the dacha connections. Or Parker dumps us - I just dont see it.

So as mad as it sounds, I dont think there is a prem job out there for him.

I wonder if their next manager will get 90 points? Wilder can be a dick but also has a rawness’s to him, sometimes to his own detriment, can’t fault his passion let’s see if they get anywhere near that tally, possibly a big mistake

There best chance is this coming season to get promoted. I think Wilder would do the job this time around especially since the teams coming down are not going to be as strong as us or Leeds were last season. Sacking him is a big gamble.

But Rooney has proved nothing, apart from not being very good at Management. At least Wilder has shown he can put the points on the board, to be fair to him he was just unlucky last year.
