Vitinho starting for Botafogo, FIFA should divert all monies to us plus interest until it's paid.

Botafogo won 2-1. Interestingly Vitiniho was up against Ryan Kent who we had been linked with a few times, bar one foul on him Vitinho had him in his pocket - Kent was crap.

Chelsea v LA on Channel 5 now - I don't think there are even 5000 people in the ground. Proper tinpot

I was just going to say the same thing, announcing individual players to a largely empty stadium, pretty embarrassing really.

Great tournament. Just what football needed. I'd been thinking for so long that there just isn't enough football on.

Questioning how many would be there if it was on the Turf on a Monday afternoon in a workweek between two teams from over 2000 miles away and tickets at $47?

We’ll do well to get 5000 on against Lazio.
People are talking about watching Lowerhouse instead.

Just noticed LAFC shirt sponsor is BMO (Bank of Montreal) :o I'm somewhat surprised a Canadian bank would sponsor a US club. I think the commentary team is the same Canadian crew who do Toronto FC games. I'm watching on DAZN.

Yes it's a daft kick off time but Atlanta alone has a population of over half a million, Atlanta metro is over 6 million.....

There is always local cricket on for any weekend friendlies. As well as early or late season games.

We don't play home friendlies very often and it's the first time we will have played Lazio to my knowledge. If priced right I think 10/12k will be on.

Very relevant

People can’t be arsed to go to a friendly involving Burnley so they would be hardly likely to go to a Club World Cup game involving 2 irrelevant teams on a Monday afternoon at $47 a pop.

I was commenting mainly on the criticism of the Chelsea v LAFC attendance

Not relevant in the slightest. Somehow comparing attendances at a yet to happen pre-season friendly in a small town to one at the FIFA World Club Cup held in a large city with a huge catchment area is a bit strange to say the least.

Anyway each to their own.

So a pre-season friendly is being compared with a FIFA competition. Nice one. Sorry, but that comment makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I would imagine that the match days and kick off times will be similar in next years world cup and tickets will be more expensive, even for a Monday afternoon.

I doubt very much that attendances will be as low as 22,000 in that FIFA competition?

It's probably a combination of all the factors discussed above.

1. Some kick offs are during the working day at local time
2. A lot of the teams have little to no fans in the locations where the games are scheduled (even though LA is a US team, there is no real culture of away fan travel over there, so playing a group stage game in Atlanta isn't going to attract many of their fans)
3. Generally, the CWC has historically been a bit of a nothing competition, and that attitude is still in effect despite the expanded format and huge increase in prize fund

I think it's a fair assumption that more fans travel to watch international teams than they do club teams. Also the World Cup is obviously much more popular than the Club World Cup.

Thats the point that I was trying to make. Matchdays or kick off times will be the same in the World Cup and there will be capacity crowds for most games.

This World Club Cup seems to have an air of indifference about it from football fans.

The only game with a poor attendance so far was the Chelsea one. River Plate fans making a lot of noise in Seattle now. The Dortmund Fluminense game in New Jersey was also rammed. Seeing City fans don’t fill their own stadium I’ve not got high hopes for them tomorrow.

See FIFA have been getting some stick about the weather conditions at the PSG Athletico game. Must admit with all their hi-tech stadiums playing a midday game in the blazing sun at the Rose Bowl with no roof seems a bit daft.

Interesting article in the Daily Mail about this being a tournament too far that is mostly unloved but more than that- simply not needed in this time of saturation coverage of football.
I’d post the link if I could but I’m rubbish at stuff like that!

How are the teams selected for this tournament? Why City & Chelsea for example? Why aren't Liverpool there?

Prior to this season they hadn't won the PL since COVID was rife.

The qualifying period was 2021 to 2024. Chelsea and Man CIty won the Champs League during that period. Only two clubs from each Country can be represented (unless more had won the qualifying tournament (Champs League) which none did, Chelsea, Man City and Real Madrid x2 for Europe). So Man City and Chelsea get the English slots. The remainder was calculated by the rankings with teams passed over if 2 clubs from that country were already selected. Hence why Salzburg got there ahead of AC Milan, Barcelona and Liverpool.

Manchester City play Moroccan team W Casablanca today at the Lincoln Financial field, a bit of a bogey team for the Citizens I would guess.

I looked at going to one of these fixtures but didn’t want to be sat in a mostly empty ground.

I opted for Orlando v Cincinnati instead and be a football tourist for the night Tickets in the home end are £10 ($12) and it looks like a much better experience.

Plus an extra tweak to make sure Messi's team was involved.

What the hell are you talking about? I think you're either confusing me with someone else or you're reading far too much into an innocent comment. I have never said anything on here about so called Americanization of sport on any topic or subject. I have no idea of how sports teams in America come out for a game whether individually or as a team, I'm guessing it's different for different sports.

The obsessions with the attendances aside, been some decent games so far. Al Hilal are currently giving Real Madrid a fright.
