Iron Maiden

I know there's a few old school metallers on here, so any Clarets doing it over the next couple of weeks?

I’ve obviously been doing too much research. I read Iron Maiden and immediately thought of the medieval torture device, with not a thought about the rock band.

Be good to watch them at the London stadium (or Scandinavia). Probably wouldn’t get there now hadn’t realised they were on.

Seeing them a week on Saturday at the London Stadium. Cannot wait. First saw them in 1990 at Preston Guild Hall, supported by Wolfsbane, who I saw two months ago at a tiny venue in Bedford. Opposite ends of the heavy metal spectrum.

Saw them two years ago after last seeing them on Bruce Dickinson's first farewell tour in the early 90s.

They've still got it.

Saw them on their Dance of Death tour and they were so good, alas not this time. I am going to see Linkin Park at Wembley a week on Saturday though, which will probably be met with criticism on a thread like this, but I can’t wait! :D

I'm going. And I've got three gigs in four nights which is pushing it for an old idiot like me.

Tonight: Sophie B Hawkins
Sat: An Audience With Mark and Lard
Sun: Iron Maiden

Yes, my music taste is wide ranging, why do you ask?

Saw them at Lancaster Uni in 1980 (I think) with Paul Dianno as lead singer.

They were young fresh and had a punky edge as a lot of NWOBHM bands did. They were fantastic and exciting then.

Saw them at Download a few years back and they are not for me unfortunately and almost seem like a parody of a metal band.

A lot of my pals still absolutely adore them .

Hi, the full price was just short of £110...I have them listed on ticketmaster at £100 (let me know if interested and I can either send the link to the tickets [assuming that's ok on here] or can do a transfer via ticketmaster itself. Cheers

For me, the two most influential UK metal bands were Sabbath and Maiden.

Both were unbelievable live, in their pomp.

Haven't recounted this story for many a year:
November 1984, Ottawa Civic Centre, a pre-arranged interview for a local radio station with Iron Maiden.

After a false start due to the delayed arrival of the A+R man I had to meet first, it was decided to do the interview after the show. So, tape recorder and mic at hand I stood in the stage's wings and watched Twisted Sister warm up the crowd, before Maiden hit the stage. What surprised me was how different it sounded being side stage, rather than facing the band from the stalls, but it was great to see them at such close quarters.

After the show - and a beer or two probably - Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson came to meet me, decided between themselves who would do the interview with me, and then it was time to start. Bruce was on top form, and every bit as you might imagine in personality. Friendly, great sense of humour, thoughtful responses and easy company.

We chatted for close to an hour about all sorts: the contrast between N. American and European audiences, writing, recent problems with protesters in the Bible belt, the band's invitation to play in Poland (which was then still behind the Iron Curtain - they LOVED Polish audiences and were very keen to return.) During that tour the band had been to Auschwitz, which was then unusual for Westerners probably, at which point Bruce's voice became very quiet. "A terrible, terrible place... it completely weirded us out".

Bruce also told me about his time with Samson, his previous band, and then we moved on to him choosing and introducing a few favourite cuts to be played alongside the interview. These included:

Deep purple: Nobody's Home
AC/DC: Touch Too Much
The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown: Fire
Jethro Tull: Under Wraps
Billy Idol: Rebel Yell
and a couple of others that slip my mind...

To leave the backstage area I had to walk through a room where the band were unwinding and meeting a few fans who'd won competitions etc. Steve and I had a quick chat about his team (West Ham) and then I was on way.

Quite an evening!

It sounds ******* terrible actually, as you're behind the PA. In ear monitors have been a bit of a godsend for bands considering the monitor mix some sound engineers manage to throw at you.

There's four of me going to West Ham on Saturday. I've never been to West Ham before, so this is a prelude to 4 more of me going to watch Metallica there next year. Metal up yer ass, as they say.

I've seen them four times now, Saturday gone being the most recent, and it was the best they've been.
Some of that will be the set list for sure - I'm a fan, but I'm not a fanatic, so I'm not bothered about post 2000 stuff but love my 80's stuff, in particular the Bruce era - which is what this tour is all about.
They are consummate professionals, which is the very least you'd expect after all this time, but time can and does catch up with the body and they are all pushing 70 and still running round like 20 year olds on stage. I'd find it inspiring if that's how you sold washing machines or did the accounts, but they are much more sedentary affairs these days, thankfully.

My band is Metallica, and I'd be quite happy never to hear them play Enter Sandman or Nothing Else Matters ever again, but hearing Iron Maiden play Fear of the Dark and Hallowed Be Thy Name never gets old.
