England v India

Post by bodge » Fri Jun 20, 2025 10:32 am

England win toss and put them in, a surprise.

Not convinced about our bowling attack but let's see how we go at the home of cricket.

Read something earlier in the week which said the stats show England win more at Headingley batting second.

Hopefully this is the correct decision rather than one of those where it is blindingly following the stats

India captain said he'd have bowled first had he won the toss

There's a bit of lateral movement but I can't help feeling it may be a long day in the field for England..

I think the advice to bowl first came from the groundsman. A bit of moisture still in the square apparently, which they expect to dry out.

Let's hope India don't have any decent last day spinners.

Bowlers starting to get movement after the first 20 mins or so. England need a couple of wickets at least this session though to justify putting India in. Fingers crossed.

Bumrah may be the key to this series, if there's life in the wicket i wouldn't want to face him!

Just got in so switched on to watch. Why the hell are we bowling first after winning the toss. Our batting line-up is as strong as it's been in years and in my opinion our bowling attack is not great without Anderson and Broad.

Watching the Aussies last week I started to think they were poor enough for us to won the ashes.

Watching our bowling attack has brought me back to my senses.

It’s a concern. We probably need Atkinson, Wood and Archer fit (rotate the latter two). None of the 3 are playing today.

Atkinson should be fit for the second test, I read.

So true.
I've watched most of the match so far and irrespective of whether we bowled 1st or 2nd this must be one of the weakest and predictable bowling attacks we've ever fielded.
However, had we batted first and batted well, bowling is much easier when you've already got a score of 500+ on the board.

If this lad Bashir is really the best spin bowling option we've got then the future's pretty bleak in that department.

Hi sjb,

Cheers. Great batsman but apparently not the most modest of individuals.

That’s the first time in test cricket history that the top six have scored three centuries and two ducks in an innings (TMS).

Apparently not. An ex England player I spoke to a couple of years described him as being 'almost as big a c*nt as Kevin Pietersen'.

Good recovery given the context of India being 430-3 at one point.

Bumrah in these conditions though could be wild.

Finished 209-3 Pope 100 not out. Root out to Bumrah who then had Brook caught off a no ball. Need Pope to go big and a score from Brook and Stokes to get back in it.

We have a team who ae excellent at falling for their own hype. That shot by Brook, at that stage of the game, was horrible. He is a very lucky lad but Bumrah will sort him tomorrow

A proper test match so far. Key session coming up. If England are still batting at the end of it they are right back in it. If not then probably an uphill struggle to get a draw out of it.

Just as we approach the new ball, Smith gets caught out on the boundary edge. 349/6.

The situation required Smith and Brook to be there when the new ball was taken, not clattering it to be caught on the edge.
