However there isn't a proper Sports Shop in Newcastle that's if you don't count Sports Direct. You are very lucky to have Cockers in Burnley.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Sun Jun 22, 2025 6:35 pm
I was wandering down Grey St in Newcastle today. It's one of the most beautiful streets in the country. But so many frontages, and the floors above, remain empty. Absolutely ridiculous. Prime location being wasted. I just can't understand it

I think in terms of service you receive In shops these days, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. Customer service is dreadful, half the staff can't be arsed. Probably better to be serviced by robotsollieclarets8 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 22, 2025 6:58 pmHow long before humans physically never interact? Actual stores will disappear by the generation.

I agree with you. It's only a matter of time. The main reason why I think we still have cash and humans in stores is because there are older generations. There are elderly people who will never want to go away from cash and humans. In 30-40 years time everybody will have been brought up with tech.

Surprised to see Primark listed above. Still in Europe and operate in Ireland as Penneys.

Lovely fellah, used to string my rackets back in the day.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 11:58 amHe was a nice man was Malcolm, sadly passed away in the week before the country shut down in March 2020, he was 79. I am not certain on this but I'm sure he was involved at Burnley FC for a short time as a sprint trainer, probably under Adamson. I'm sure you are right with 1960 Olympics and he was definitely a 400 metre runner.

Unless you get the metro or a bus into the toon it's expensive to visit, parking cost a fortune, it's not surprising that many of the upper floors are vacant.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Sun Jun 22, 2025 6:35 pmIt's not just the shops that we've lost, but the buildings that remain empty

The Silverlink is as busy as ever, mind it is in a good location being just off the coast road and also free parking. Not sure what incentives are offered to retail to locate there, but whatever they're doing is working.
Once we have worked out what we want from our town and city centres in the digital age, I'm sure the buildings will once again find occupancy of some sort.

Used to go there after a match and have one of their ham and beetroot baps and a cup of tea. Long time ago.

It also doesn't help that 99% of shops haven't adapted to the time. Only being open till 5pm means that most people can't use them, as they are working. Long gone are the days of a house wife who goes to the shops.
They can't make a go of it of Doris who's wandering round on her pension.
Then the small businesses like fresh food shops only open till lunchtime on a Saturday, and not at all on a Sunday. Massively reduces their opportunity for customers.
Lots of people don't like the high street closing down, but if people can't use it, that's what happens.

Netto was more like a prison tuck shop than a supermarket. Utterly grim.
