Tell you what.

Cooper and Weiss as your two main keepers.

That’s a very strong core of young talent

*still say Trafford would have turned Cullen’s shot round the post though, not palmed it back out for Brownhill’s chance.

I do t think Cooper is anywhere near good enough for the Premier League to be honest. I’ll be really surprised if he gets a move to that level.

I can't help thinking that if there's one area a team really can't go into a Premier League season without proper experience it's goalie. We saw it first hand with Trafford, but we really didn't need to see that to know you HAVE to get experience between the sticks at that level, especially when you're newly promoted or you're always going to be struggling.

Not as good as Pope

Strange Ian. Newcastle rate Trafford higher than Pope (and they see him every week) but you think he's good enough to be 1st choice for us.
I doubt Newcastle would be looking to ship him out if he could maintain a season at PL standard.

11 years between them with pope past peak & Trafford pre peak. If you are looking at things with a long term view that’s what Newcastle will be rating. He could maintain another season at PL standard beyond that not sure. Pope needs to move on or play 2nd fiddle it’s not Newcastle as such looking to move him on nick will himself desire to be number 1.

Based on what? He had a pretty good record last season with Sheff Utd fans raving about his performances….

Same.

Looks small in the net, just about playing at his level right now - but I don't think there's anything special about him.

I also think we should have kept Vigouroux as a number 2 instead of signing Hladky (benefit of hindsite as well there).

Looks like Hladky had a career year for Ipswich 23/24, but when he played for us last season, it seemed to be back to the level he has been for the majority of his playing career- a bog standard journeyman goalkeeper.

I believe that Pope has already said he won't play 2nd fiddle, and I'm certain Trafford won't either.
Pope to Leeds is much more likely, IMHO.

Possibly. My reply was more aimed towards doubting that NP wouldn't be capable of maintaining another season at PL level maybe not at a top top club but he could certainly fill in a stop gap for the likes of us. Newcastle are in a completely different recruitment arena to us.

The workload could be an issue for NP. He will very likely be much busier than he's got used to being.

I don't think there is any chance we get Cooper. SheffU would want £20m for him, and we won't be paying that.

Newcastle rate Trafford's potential and ability with the ball at his feet above Popes.

Right now they want a keeper who will help them play expensive football, has great potential and someone they hope to keep around the club for a number of years or make big profit on.

Right now, we fundamentally need a goalkeeper who can keep the ball out of our goal. That is it.

We are at complete opposites on the spectrum for any comparison.

I'm going to put my head out of the parapet and say I would actually be happier going into next season with Pope in the net than Trafford.
I just think Pope would do a better job in a relegation battling side and as a goalkeeper (not a footballer) imo is still right now a better player. I like Traff but he's not hit his peak yet. Which likely will be higher than Popes has been. But right now, long live the Pope!

Is there any suggestion that Pope is interested in signing for us ? The two most likely scenarios seem to be staying at Newcastle, regardless of them signing Trafford or not...or moving to Leeds.

Did you watch our games this year? That playing with his feet is critical to how we play. Pope would be like Bambi on ice in our current setup.

Assuming Trafford will leave we need the tallest best shop stopper we can afford, we will face countless set pieces this season against teams full of giants. We can't do what we did last time and give away cheap goals.

Think we will aim for the highest value we can get from Newcastle, and void of any part exchanges. The key driver will be how much up front. We need a high figure for PSR. If we can get close to £40m it goes a long way to funding the 4 loans of last year who have now all been signed up

If you think we will be able to play out from the back as we did this season I would suggest that it is you that has not watched enough football games in his time.

I'd rather just keep Trafford for another season while we let another keeper develop in the background.

But maybe the cash will be too tempting for us (and him).

It's not essential. But in any case Trafford is now a better goalkeeper than Pope.

All round probably but I think he'd make less saves. Popes wingspan is ridiculous and means he can make saves a lot easier than they are. The big problem is he physically can't kick a football, it's actually quite impressive that he seems unable to learn. A real win chalked up for the nature side in the old nature vs nurture debate.

You are assuming we will attack next season like the last one. Parker is far too pragmatic for that. He knows we can’t play the same game, and that will start at the back.

We need a keeper to be a keeper at PL level, not a sweeper who can pick it up occasionally.

I think you are underestimating Trafford's upward trajectory. He wouldn't be in the England set-up ahead of Pope if he wasn't the better option.
Don't get me wrong, I really rated Pope, but he is past his best and the game has changed.

We scored few enough goals in the Championship playing that attacking style. If we go all defenesive our best chance in a game is 0-0.

Good news on the Lazio kid.

On Trafford, seems deeply unfortunate to the player, but it seems if we refuse to sell him we also deny Leeds getting Pope? Win win.

Or, we get Pope in part exchange, and deny Leeds again. Win win. Pope may not be the perfect option for us, but he is a Claret and if it damages Leeds, he then is.

We can’t allow him to go and not get Pope in return. Play hardball.

Trafford has had a fantastic season for us and he's destined to be England number 1, but I'm not convinced he'd be better than Pope for us next season if it came down to the two of them.

I think getting a replacement goalkeeper in isolation isn't that much of a problem. The big concern for me is more about from a continuity perspective if Trafford goes we will have lost CJ and Traff from the defence last season, this window is going to be tough enough without having to replace some of our better first team players as well.

I don't think we can say Trafford is a better keeper than Pope yet. Pope has proved himself in the prem over many years, Trafford had a tough time in his single premier league season.

And injury free there's nothing really wrong with any of them, especially bearing in mind that advancing age is largely irrelevant to a good goalie.

To be fair , we bemoaned the loss of Muric & O'Shea last season which led to the rise of Trafford & Egan-Riley 👍

Highly likely Pope won’t be going anywhere. Newcastle want to team up pope and Traff.

What if Pope doesn’t want to join us?
Parker relies on his man management skills to keepTrafford happy.

We can’t let both Newcastle and Leeds improve their keepers, leaving us with worse.

Lyon relegated. Subject to appeal. Many players will go if they lose it.

Reminds me that we bid €15m for Georges Mikautadze which was rejected and who ended up going to Lyon for €18.5m. Another “if only” from our last promotion. I reckon the bidding war this time will mean we have missed the boat. Very good player.

Depends who we have in mind to replace Traff.

Burnley value Trafford at 40 mil, Newcastle we will give you 30 mil & Pope? Who in their right mind thinks Pope is worth 10 mil & wages to match.

A lot of fans thought Pope was worth a lot more than £10m when we sold him to Newcastle.
