Munich

Got a short trip planned to Munich with my lad next week - as the font of all knowledge I turn to UTC for must see / must do things whilst there. He's only 16 so not really looking for stag do type suggestions.

Depends on weather and taste however here are a few non-drinking sights / activities that might be suitable..
  • Allianz stadium tour
  • Tollwood summer festival at the Olympic Park (free to walk round, lots of stalls and tents with entertainment). The park itself is nice to walk around with things going on.
  • Walk to the top of St Peter's tower in the centre, brilliant views.
  • Taking it easy in the English Gardens and swimming in the river. A few beer gardens in there to get food.
  • Take the s-bahn to Starnberg lake and hire an electric boat.
  • Hire bikes / scooters and cycle down the Isar river, great paths.

I'm heading off to Munich this Saturday. I'm actually staying in a beautiful alpine town 1 hour south by train. The train journey is breathtaking. Once in the town you could go to the winter Olympic centre and see the terrifying ski jumps and toboggan runs. The town is called Garmisch - Partenkirchen. You could also take a ski lift to the highest mountain in Germany (the Zugspitze). From the top you can see 4 different countries.

Quality gaff Munich, would strongly recommend the Deutsches museum in the centre, loads of old planes and transport memorabilia.

BMW museum is also really good that is close to the Olympic stadium, you will need to get the metro but it's only a few stops off memory.

We ate in the Rathaus (town hall) it's at basement level, that was a decent restaurant.

Enjoy !

The Third Reich tour is very good if you're interested in war history.

A day trip to Dachau concentration camp is also possible, depending on appetite. (You can easily do it yourself by getting the Nuremberg train to Dachau. There's then a very small bus terminus with a dedicated shuttle to the camp)

Also Neuschwanstein castle is a must see day trip.

It's been a few years since I last went but there was a tour company situated inside the main train station if you're short on ideas when you get there

Yeah we were thinking of Dachau as well. We are both interested in war history so the Third Reich tour is another good shout. I might need to go back..

No worries.

The reason I suggested doing it by yourself was because I found the guided tour to be incredibly rushed. We were marched past many important areas at great speed with only time for a passing glance. Until you've been once then you don't realise how easy it is to do it yourself

I second the BMW museum too, and from memory, I think it's free?
The old Olypiastadion is across the road, and when I went, albeit a few years ago now, they were trialling the Zipline from the floodlights across the pitch.

If you look closely, you my just locate my arsehole that dropped when I stepped off the platform!!!!

The bus tour is very interesting, many different parts of a city steeped in rich history, - and breweries!

We used to stay just over the border in Lermoos but were in Garmisch-P. often. Above the Ski Jumps is a lovely gorge walk, the Partnachklamm. We did train trips into Munich, easy as peasy.
Can't add anything to Rouwens’ excellent guide, except the Brauhaus just down Tal from Marienplatz.

Partnachklamm is on my list of things to do. You are right about the trains, they are regular as clockwork. Is Lermoos in Austria TT?

Certainly recommend Neuschwanstein castle or Zugspitze on day trips.

Great city is Munich, loads of excellent suggestions on here already.

The Hofbräuhaus is worth a visit for some food in the evening, it's a big old place with a traditional band on most evenings, and typical Bayerisch food.

Olympic stadium, English Gardens, Allianz arena all a good shout.

Hopefully it's cooled down by then, as it's in the mid 30s this week.

Point of note, your lad could also have a Maß if he's 16 as that's the age for beer and wine in Germany (spirits are 18).

Would highly recommend taking one of these tours
All on bike paths visiting lots of the main sites and you stop for a beer in the Englischer Garten

Dachau is great too and very easy by train and then the shuttle bus

Some already mentioned that I'd recommend

English Garden
Allianz
Dachau - if that is of interest to him, as said, easy to get to.
BMW

Also if you like stadia, you could still wander around the old Olympic Stadium for a small charge when I was last there.

And the Hofbräuhaus is also worth a visit.

Check out the public transport too - long time since I was there but you could buy a Bayern Ticket which allowed up to five you travel on train/bus/tram - even as far as Salzburg in Austria.

Correct. Only 15 miles from Garmisch. To the East of the Zugspitze. A wonderful valley with 3 villages surrounded by peaks.

Found the Bayern ticket details - it's 32 euros now so might be a bit over the top for two of you

Anybody making the trip to Neuschwanstein, well worth it, should try and fit in the Weiskirche. A stunning church, all white and gold interior. Only 15 miles from Neuschwanstein. Not sure if combined trips are available as we did them by car.

Make sure you're travelling in the right direction, the Germans don't like it when you dont!

Regarding the Englischer Garten, there's a place at the start of the park, when walking from the Hofgarten part, where there are people using the natural current & waves of the river to surf. Pretty cool to see.

If you go to Neuschwanstein - and I'd recommend it - then pop round to Fussen for a typical small bavarian town well worth visiting. Makes a long day perhaps but worth it.

If you do go to Neuschwanstein - get off the bus at Marien Brucke rather than going straight to the castle. Step onto the bridge and turn to look left. The view will knock your socks off.

Dachau is also worth visiting not perhaps as poignant as Auschwitz but you get time to study some of the horrors the Nazis created to torture human beings. They really were sick b*****ds.

Another tip on Neuschwanstein. The last time we were there we took a cable car up to the ridge then walked back to the castle. Very soon got super views of the castle from unexpected spots. Ended up crossing the bridge with the jigsaw view of the castle. Recommended if you have the time.

If you are into your war history, i would really recommend
Nazi documentation centre close to Konigsplatz.

Some good restaurants/pubs I'd highly recommend from my time there in addition to suggestions above..
Rusticana - amazing Ribs but need to book!)
Andy's krablergarten - the best Schnitzel and huge portions
Klosterwirt - Traditional Bavarian restaurant with Augustiner beer served from a wooden keg.
Hofbraukeller - Lovely beer garden
Weisses brauhaus on tal.
Viktualienmarkt - market in the centre with food vendors and beer garden
Le Clou - a bar that Freddy Mercury used to be a regular in, there are pictures on the wall of him in there.

Have a great time!
