German retro preview for the Burnley-HSV game

Hi all, I came across this retro preview from the Norddeutscher Rundfunk for the Burnley HSV 1961 European Cup game. (I hope both the link and video work).

Some nice footage of the town and the Turf. It also shows the Burnley team having a little training game, including a rabona pass at 1:30

HSV's coach was interviewed at the beginning, saying that they were confident. Bert Trautmann is also interviewed. He said some interesting things, such as that Burnley's 1960-61 squad was stronger than the previous year's. He further stated that Burnley had a stable team with only one star player, Jimmy Mac, although he hailed Pointer as the best centre-forward in English football. Trautmann also said he was going to be present at Turf Moor for the game.

Enjoyed that, nice backing music and great to see the old Market Hall again, almost forgotten about that. I remember the open market outside the covered hall though (those black pudding and tripe stalls )

My Mum had a stall on the open market selling sweets and confectionary products.

I'm also amazed that they trained there, given that the Gawthorpe training ground had already been built in 1955. Ah well, it makes good viewing

True, but even the current PSG team would look ordinary on that training strip and with early 1960s equipment tbf.

Most of the training was at Gawthorpe.

Enjoyed watching that video although my German isn’t brilliant.

But we won the home leg.

We’d had a really bad frost prior to the game but on the day of the game came a sudden thaw leaving us with a mud heap of a pitch.

It's remarkable that we seem to have more injuries these days than then. Certainly long term career enders (yes the irony of Trautman isn't lost on me).

There was a BFI film used as a filler in the cinemas, early 60s in colour, of them training against the **** nook walls. I'm wondering if it was the one that focussed on Alex Elder, that is on youtube.

Brilliant video and interesting views of the town and club in the early 1960’s.

Despite a number of requests nobody has ever found that classic photo taken by a young local photographer who had saved the last frame on his film for the event featured in his image which went ‘viral’ or whatever it did in those days.

The photo captured German great Uve Seeler having a kick about with some Burnley urchins in a street near Turf Moor.

The Hamburg team were staying at the Keirby Hotel for the fixture and decided to have a stroll up Yorkshire Street to the Turf and back. Seeler joined in the kick about and the historical photo was taken.

It’s probably over ten years since I last saw the image on line.

It seems to have disappeared.

We wrote to the photographer (Richard Moore??) and he didn’t reply.
