Awful crowd. Welcome to the world of smartphones Oasis. Probably the worst they’ve ever played to.

Saw a few clips. Beer/**** cups being slung in all of them.

Got no interest in being in a crowd that wants to shower each other in beer (or ****).

The Earlies were decent back in the day.

I'm sure I saw him at Mainz for the pre-season a couple of years back.
Prior to the Oasis stuff he was touring with Doves along with Nathan Sudders who's also a Burnley lad.

The Earlies are due to play a gig down in London in October (I think) to celebrate 20 years since their first album.

With King Creosote. Was desperately hoping for a London away game the same weekend but turns we've no game, so assuming it's an international break.

That would have been a good weekend!

Have you listened to any of Madden's solo output?

I was trying to get a ticket for yesterday but didn’t because I wouldn’t shell out that price. Frustratingly there were a few tickets on Ticketmaster but you couldn’t access them without an invite code, even just an hour before they were on stage. There aren’t many tickets around for tonight which is surprising as yesterday there were quite a few.

I doubt it even comes close to matching one of their worst shows at The Whisky A Go Go when the band were off their faces and had different setlists to one another on stage 😂

Aye, did a couple of albums I think, but it's a while since I listened to them to be honest.

For the princely sum of £33 a ticket i saw Blossoms and Stereophonics last night at Finsbury Park. Both bands were excellent. There were a couple other support acts earlier but I got stuck in the pub

Not my bag. Never liked them. But hope everyone who sees them enjoys it. Paying about 120 quid less for a ticket to see Stevie wonder sing like he was still in his 20’s on Thursday is more my thing. What a gig.

I’ve been to plenty of away games, but i stay well clear of the concourse if I can. Usually have my teenage daughter with me, and that’s the last place she wants to be.

It’s possible to avoid at gigs as well. I often go with my wife and last thing we want is covered in beer/p1ss.

I went to see them a few times 30 years ago, when for 12-18 months I thought they were amazing. Great to see so many youngsters going now, it was similar at the Roses reunion gigs a few years back.

Not my thing this time round but hope everyone has a cracking day out, sounded better than I expected from the bits I've seen.

The fact there was only one track (ok, two if you include ****** in the Bushes) from a post Be Here Now album tells you everything you need to know about what they think of their later output. Which is a shame, because songs like The Importance of Being Idle, Gas Panic, I''m Outta Time and Falling Down are all worthy of being included imo. Columbia is the obvious omission from their early stuff, but pretty much everything else is as you'd expect. Wonder if they'll switch up the playlist as the tour goes on. They did sound good, but as always, it'll be interesting how to see how they're getting on ten gigs deep.

Because a mass-production phone that had a built in camera and audio recording facility hadn't been invented yet, or are you just being stupid for effect?

From the footage I've seen, they've certainly sounded better than I expected they would. I tried for tickets, I had 4 laptops on the go, but by the time I got to choosing dates and availability I was looking at £300+ per ticket and I'm just not that bothered. I saw them at Bolton, Leeds, Manchester, and Birmingham back in the day so I don't need to pay that kind of money to see them now. Also, I suspect they will get worse as the tour goes on. From my experience they were either unbelievably good, or embarrassingly bad. There was no in-between. Birmingham NEC was a particular low - my word they were dreadful. That said, Leeds was exact opposite - they smashed it out the park, and were arguably the best live act I've ever seen. I'm sure people will enjoy it, especially the younger fans.

No I'm not being stupid at all. I'm making a point that people went to hear the band and we're not distracted by social media crap we now have. And yes I'm well aware of when the mobile phone was invented.

I wouldn't say most are 'distracted' - people just want to film a significant moment in their life and share with whoever they want to share with. I agree I don't understand those who film a gig from practically start to finish, but there's nothing wrong with capturing a fleeting moment to enjoy again and again. It's how most of us are seeing these clips from Cardiff!

Social media (as we think of it) hadn't been invented either.

We certainly didn't have mobile phones for the Knebworth and Maine rd gigs as we had problems trying to get everyone back together after they had finished.

It's a good job really or everyone would be sat down playing snake.

Are they maximising their time there, though?

It's different to having a camera and snapping a couple of photos for memories, filming everything and viewing the concert through a small screen certainly isn't living in the moment.

Not to mention, many bands have an official recording, which will have far better audio / video quality.

For them, yes. If people buy a ticket and watch on their phone, as long as it doesn't hinder anyone else then what is the problem?

I'm not going around policing other peoples behaviour.

The other week I watched someone that I've been waiting 33 years to see. I have a simple one minute clip of one song, which I've watched half a dozen times to remind me of a great night that again, I had waited 33 years to experience. So excuse me if holding a phone up is some kind of crime.

Calm it with the hyperbole to deflect from the actual point being made.

Why do we like going to live football vs sat watching it on tv? The atmosphere.

When people are sitting on their phones, they aren't fully engaged in the moment, which all adds to the ambience.

Look at the Masters at Augusta this year compared with every other event on the PGA tour, heck even say what several players had to say about that very topic.

So someone standing in a crowd, watching the band and singing along to the music while holding a phone up to record it isn't "fully engaged in the moment".

Right-ho.

As for your dumb football comparison, a band in concert is a vastly different beast than going to a football match. Unless you go to a match to sing along or go to a concert and get annoyed by the noise.

So someone standing in a crowd, watching the band and singing along to the music while holding a phone up to record it isn't "fully engaged in the moment".
Correct.

As for your dumb football comparison, a band in concert is a vastly different beast than going to a football match. Unless you go to a match to sing along or go to a concert and get annoyed by the noise.
Going to football = living every minute of it, the anticipation before a goal when there's a chance, reacting to tackles, joining in with chants etc.

Are you saying that the atmosphere at Augusta is better than all the other PGA events ?
No, I inferred that by being mobile free, it adds to the ambience and gives a certain 'feel' to the event.

It's impossible to quantify.

Prior to the Oasis stuff he was touring with Doves along with Nathan Sudders who's also a Burnley lad.

The Earlies are due to play a gig down in London in October (I think) to celebrate 20 years since their first album.
Bit late?

Ah ok.
It probably adds to the elitist nature of some golf courses and events rather than “ambience”.

I’ve been to many many golf events and back in the day you used to have to hand your mobile in and pick it up on leaving. St Amdrews did that for our Open when I went a number of years ago.

Since these rules (and others) were relaxed by many courses and events the number of people attending has gone up significantly in recent years. So as the cost of attending….and so as the TV money and therefore the prize money. Next years Open at Birkdale is £140 a ticket - even 5 years ago it was half that price.

The crowds are far noisier and the atmosphere is miles better because the crowds are 2 and 3 times as big. And yes a lot of the crowd have their mobile phones out and are recording the action.

The Masters is unique - it can afford to keep the same stuffy rules. Players will like it because it’s the Masters and the most prestigious event. It’s nothing to do with fans being more engaged. Every other event on the tour is like pretty much every sporting event or music event these days - very expensive to watch, huge demand for tickets and half of the crowd using their phones. It’s what pays those ridiculous amounts of money they earn !

Yet it makes it special, right?

Totally detracted from the thread now - artists/groups have been pretty vocal about getting annoyed at looking out to the crowd and seeing a sea of mobile phones being held up, and I'd wager the overwhelming vast majority would prefer if you didn't.

Ultimately, using a phone (especially in excess), even if you think it isn't distracting you, is distracting you.

From a personal anecdote, every time I've done a bit of a digital detox, I've felt much better. It annoys me to no end just how much smartphones burden us, though they can be a great addition to one's life when used in moderation.

Be some messy states at Heaton park this weekend i think! Getting carried away on the drink/drugs all afternoon in 30 degrees weather is a recipe for disaster lol.
