No knowledge about whether Raheem would sign for us, but I do know he has a house near Knutsford, so easily commutable for his driver.

Sterling is older than I thought. I thought he was about 28.

Still take him tho.

Raheem sterling? No a fkn chance would he put his dainty little feet anywhere nr E Lancs.
You know he wouldn't have to live up Stoops, right? We should rightly make a point of our proximity to Cheshire etc and try to tempt fringe players, especially from the Manc / Scouse clubs. Either young prospects or older ones who aren't quite as regularly involved as they may have liked..... (Yes, i'm aware Sterling for one he is currently contracted to Chelsea)

"You''ll play more and you don't have to move house and move the kids out of their school" can't be the worst sales pitch ever.....

My opinion was that the defence trusted him more (then probably not now) we played out better and more calmly (in general) and he made some excellent saves in games against Wolves, Brentford among others where we picked up points.

I wasnt the only one. Final Player ratings for that season.

7.15 - Arijanet Muric
6.49 - Sander Berge
6.32 - Luca Koleosho
6.30 - Jordan Beyer
6.25 - Maxime Estève
6.24 - Josh Cullen
6.19 - Charlie Taylor
6.10 - Dara O'Shea
6.00 - Lyle Foster
5.95 - Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson
5.93 - James Trafford
5.88 - Lorenz Assignon
5.83 - Josh Brownhill
5.81 - Jacob Bruun Larsen
5.74 - Wilson Odobert
5.71 - Vitinho
5.58 - Connor Roberts
5.56 - Ameen Al-Dakhil
5.55 - Jay Rodriguez
5.53 - Hannes Delcroix
5.45 - David Datro Fofana
5.31 - Zeki Amdouni
5.04 - Aaron Ramsey

Results with him in:

Brentford won (he played very well)
Chelsea away - drew
Wolves drew - (he played well - should have won)
Everton away - lost by a goal from his mistake (should have drawn)
Brighton - drew with a goal from his mistake (should have won)
Sheff Utd away - won
Man Utd away - drew

Then lost our last three vs Newcastle, Spurs (away), Forest. Think I recall he also played very well away at spurs in the cup.

So we picked up 10 points in 10 games with him in goal. With that average we would have stayed up by at least 6 or 7 points.

Conversely we picked up 14 points in 28 games with Trafford in goal.

Its been done to death. And there are nuances and other factors in play. But the facts are we got much better results with him in goal (against some good sides too).

The problem is (was always the case - see Blackpool at home) his errors are usually high profile, almost always down to how he plays / is asked to play! But he is a good keeper.

Trafford was on a hiding to nothing from early on. And he almost gave a 'Muric Everton' goal away against luton early in the season.
Muric didn’t play a single match against a top 4 side. From the sample of 10 matches listed just 2 were against top 6 teams and 4 were against teams in the bottom 6.

As I said earlier if this thread is to believed next season our team will consist largely of players who failed to cut it last time we were in the epl, lightweight wideman, untried pub league players, crocks and geriatrics.
It's an inductive assessment let the abuse begin :ugeek:

His record last season was similar to Calum Wilson. So not convinced myself. But he’s been a top player and even the season before last he was doing ok. He will know walker. Played for England with Parker. So who knows.

Esteve is simply a ‘not for sale’. Signed a 5 year deal last summer, loves it here, can’t see him complaining at us rejecting bids or asking for too much. Stick a £100m price tag on him so there’s no ‘interest’.

I think Esteve is brilliant, but Spurs going after him is probably not the change in approach their fans are after.

You’d assume they’d have to fork out north of £30m and they’d be getting a lad with very little experience at the level of football they’d hope to be operating at.

That’s pretty much what their approach has been the last few years and, whilst acknowledging the Europa League win, it also led to their lowest league placing in a generation.

Would be very handy to retain him - our current back 5 (with the new lads), if they stay fit, gives us a chance of being competitive this year - it's front footed (full backs), fast, and all now have top level experience.

Very much hope we can keep it together.

Probably worth noting they the journo breaking the Esteve story also had us signing Andy Diouf this time last week.

No doubt he’ll be being fed by Esteve’s agent.

As well, same journo who reported the supposed Spurs bid in January, which Matt Scrafton (Burnley Express) said wasn’t true (turns out he was correct with Diouf not being close too).

Worth a lot more to stay up and keep Esteve than sell him and go down. Realistic for him to be the difference.

I think to lose both centre backs and the GK from last season would be hard to put a positive spin on, no matter how much money we get.

I’ve come to terms with Trafford leaving, but selling Esteve as well starts to smack of us revisiting last summer.

If Esteve and Trafford did go, you’d have to expect the club to sanction a few deals that broke our transfer record, either to replace them or strengthen elsewhere.

Staying in the Prem is tough enough, without offloading your best players and trying to survive on the cheap.

Didn't Esteve intimate recently how much he loves the club, how much they have done for him and he will be playing for us next season, or words very much to that affect?

I don’t think we live in a world any more where there’s a great deal of loyalty, even on the back of a successful season.

Football is run by agents seeking more and more money for themselves and their clients. Outside of the top handful of teams in the world, nobody seems settled for long. The Bayern Munich CEO said as much a few weeks ago.

The queue at Matt Williams door last summer from a group of players who hadn’t been good enough for the PL was a sorry state of affairs.

Hard to imagine that us or Spurs have been talking to Lequipe. It’ll be Esteve’s agent.

This may all be very true and I don't doubt he really does have a lot of affection for the club - but if Spurs make an acceptable offer - is he going to turn down Champions League football and a chance to be in the spotlight for a World Cup place next year (and more money)?

I think we all know the answer unfortunately.

Hopefully Levy fails to come up with an acceptable offer.

Losing the spine of the team that got you promoted (Trafford, Riley, Esteve, Brownhill) and expecting to survive in the PL would be expecting too much of any manager, much as I admire Scott Parker and what he had achieved thus far.

Brownhill's not good enough so we don't need to worry about losing him. Trafford and Egan-Riley, although excellent, are replaceable. So that's just Estève.

I don't think it works that way, any individual can be replaced, the hard part is recreating the unit.

I would raise that to be the reason supporters would be happy to see Pope back here rather than just 'an obsession with former players'.

First paragraph is an extremely hard read.

Sterling as an alternative to chamberlain, they play completely different positions, I thought chamberlain was just typical beskitas and Turkish media as seems to be every window

He was brilliant for us and I’m certain without him we’d have come down sooner. The amount of high balls he took with ease really helped take the pressure off our defence and gave us time to regroup. People talk about Heaton being our best goalkeeper in recent years but not for me, Pope is my number one keeper I’ve seen in a Burnley shirt.

Interesting on Cajuste - looks like would be a good addition given that the ITFC fans seemed to rate him.

I did not watch that much Prem las year, as was too engrossed with the Clarets - anyone seen enough of him to comment on his abilities / how he would fit in? Josh Laurent upgrade assume?

Not physical enough and prone to injury was what i got from Ipswich fans on the link.

Yet they are desperate to have him back if you read their board. He also played 30 games which isn't too bad for an injury prone player.

He was second in their player of the season too......but the first page of comments were all negative! Go figure.

"I want a goalkeeper who can save shots and command his box."

That's what we all want, I hope. That's why I loved Nick Pope despite his kicking.
Indeed. Never understood why some complain at goalkeepers or defenders that hoof it clear at the first sign of danger.

Rather have that than concede some of the stupid goals given away because teams are trying to be too clever.
