SSN definitely pushing the Sargent story. Can't link it as it's on the telly.

Wolfsburg also linked.
Something must be happening. Lots of tweets coming out of Norwich 🤔🙄

Who’d of thought players like Ivan Toney and Liam Delap would be premier league level after their performances in the championship.

I’d much rather spend 15-20m on a proven championship goalscorer with English experience than risking it on someone from say Belgium or Dutch leagues
Chris Wood as an example….

The average number of goals scored by the 4 teams finishing 14-17th in 2024-25 was 52 (and it was skewed by Spurs scoring 64 – more than several teams in the top 8). In 2023-24 it was 49. In 2022-23 it was 38 and in 2021-22 it was 45.

Obviously it also depends on how good we are defensively (as Spurs proved last year), but lets say we’ll probably need to score around 45 goals to stay up – 4 more than we managed in 2023-24 an 11 more than in 2021-22. With this in mind we probably need a striker capable of scoring 10-12 goals next season. That’s the mark Chris would reached the last time we survived in the division.

A striker who can score 10-12 goals in the PL is probably worth £20m in todays market (probably more). So I don’t think the question is whether Josh Sargeant is worth £20m. It’s whether the club scouts and coaches think he could score 10-12 goals in our team. If they don’t, then there’s no point in buying him. If they do, they should believe that he’s worth the outlay.
I think this is true to a point, but I think at least as big a factor in our deliberations as the goals a striker might score is whether he will provide a platform and an outlet for us to turn defence into attack and get up the field. We didn't especially lack goals last time round (we scored more than a goal a game on average) but the problem we had with the likes of Amdouni was that we couldn't earn the right to get into the positions that they could be effective, and we struggled to get out when we were defending and so absorb pressure. The reason Chris Wood was worth so much to us when we first signed him was that he not only scored goals, but he gave us an out ball as well. Barnes only scored double figures in a Premier League season once but his all round contribution to the teams he played in was massive.

If we don't think Sargent is worth £20m ultimately, it may not be because we don't think he's a credible goalscorer, it may be because there is more doubt about whether he has the broader attributes that Parker thinks we need. And if ultimately we have to choose between goals and all round contribution (and so rely on goals being shared around), the latter should win the day.

Pretty much guaranteed top flight footy at Wolfsburg, we are not. Taking off the Claret glasses I know which makes more sense to him.

Or he has unfinished business in the premier league and sees this season as an opportunity to boost his career. Has played in Germany before though.

Adam Armstrong : failed
Sammie Szmodics : failed

and that's just from them down the road

You have to be a unit (like Wood) to make the step up I think.

Ollie Watkins similar build to Sargent and he hasn’t failed coming up from championship to the prem.

Armstrong about 5ft 5 and szmodics isn’t a number 9, don’t think they are a fair comparison to Sargent

Sargent in my opinion is a player that has really improved over the last 3 seasons.

It seems to be the next natural progression in his career (a move to the prem).

He’s got a very similar profile to Gyokeres. They are almost identical in height. They are the same age when the left the championship (25). Both have similar goal scoring records in the championship (Sargents is actually better).

They both like to start wide and drift in. They both also suit a style of play where they can get in behind and run at players.

I think it would be a really strong signing for us.

Totally agree, the only other striker I’ve seen us linked with probably is the 6ft 6 guy from genk but I’m not sold on him at all, just because a striker can bully defenders in Belgium doesn’t mean it’s going to work in the prem, I’d rather go with a proven striker from the championship

Sargent is the best striker in the league below and probably has been for the last few years. The only reason he hasn’t got the goals to match is due to missing large parts of each season with injury. Sargent had 15 goals 5 assists in 27 league starts.

Vydra had one good year but I wouldn’t ever say he was considered the best in the league below. I’m pretty sure Vydra was more of a 10 when he won the golden boot.

That 6ft 6 Nigerian striker from Belgium reminds me of the big 6ft 7 Nigerian Southampton signed from Genk, Paul Onuachu who scored 33 in 38 games one year in Belgium.

Onuachu just left Southampton for Turkey for probably peanuts in comparison to what they paid to get him.

I agree, the last 6ft 6 striker that was signed from Genk ended up being one of the worst striker signings in premier league history.

Paul Onuachu scored 70 goals in 96 games (in three seasons) for Genk.

Moved to Southampton and played 600 minutes before being shipped off to Turkey.

Fully accepted-always a risk as as are a number of transfers. However the club have only to ask Ashley Barnes , as he is a supposed friend of his, and ask him if he is worth the alleged fee and would he be successful in the PL with us. Ashley knew, trained and played with him for one and a half seasons. Suspect he can provide better advice than either of us

Norwich signed Kvistgaarden (somebody we should have looked at), but i still think Salech at Cardiff would be worth a look, 8 goals in 20 is still pretty good in a relegated team. Then if we have the money (which i doubt) go for a bigger name.

Probably wanting minimum 2-3x Sargent's wage and they have no re-sale value, no scope for growth and could both be totally over the hill.

And we will have a striker for 3-5 years in his best years, either gets sold for profit, or we have at minimum 15+ goals/season striker in the Champ... a no-brainer to me!

Suggested Ivanovic, Sargent or Salech. I am in agreement with Claretspice, it is the platform as much as the goalscoring potential. Would not go near Wilson - injury risk and will not provide a platform. Vardy looked done last year at this level and once again will not help provide a platform.

It's not that I don't rate him, I believe he's overpriced. He missed 16 games through injury last season, 28 the season before, anywhere within that range this season for our main striker equals relegation.

In my opinion, he's not the profile of striker I would be looking at for us, someone big, physical, who can hold the ball up is going to be key to us having any success next season. Sargent looks good technically, and he's an okay finisher, but I'm not convinced he provides the outlet needed to get the team up the field.

I would go for Tim Kleindienst, 6ft 4", aged 29, Borussia Monchengladbach, currently on 40k a week, 16 in 31 for them last season with 9 assists.

Look at all the clubs we're going to be fighting for survival, and look who leads their lines.

Mateta - Crystal Palace - 6ft 2"
Igor Thiago - Brentford - 6ft 2"
Beto - Everton - 6ft 3"
Jørgen Strand Larsen - Wolves - 6ft 4"
Rual Jimenez - Fulham - 6ft 3"
Niclas Füllkrug - West Ham - 6ft 2"

It's not a coincidence, and it's something we seriously lacked last time we were promoted, and will again if Sargent is the choice we go for.

Rual Jimenez - Fulham - 6ft 3"
Niclas Füllkrug - West Ham - 6ft 2"

It's not a coincidence, and it's something we seriously lacked last time we were promoted, and will again if Sargent is the choice we go for.
His link up play is good and he’s good at pressing. He’s 6ft1 so not tiny.

Get the feeling the same people who thought Gyokeres wasn't good enough for us think Sargent isn't either? Pretty sick of hearing we need a twenty goals a season striker! We are so far down the Q for that player is not funny. We need basically need a Wood type signing who will grow into that player if we manage to stay up.

Pretty much guaranteed top flight footy at Wolfsburg, we are not. Taking off the Claret glasses I know which makes more sense to him.
A good PL season, even if we are relegated, would put him in the shop window for an "established" PL club, who could offer much more than Wolfsburg.

Depends how long-term his thinking is.

I didn’t fancy Gyokeres and I’ll still be surprised if he’s a big hit in the Premier League, although the amount of chances Arsenal create will give him the best possible opportunity.

Feel the same about Sargent - not what we need. I’d like us to sign a big, strong, fast, powerful striker to lead the line. £20m feels a risk to me.

All that said, there’s been several good arguments raised here in recent weeks. He’s been very consistent at the level below, he’s settled in England, known to Barnes who wouldn’t recommend a bad character and your points are true that he may be one to grow in to the Prem and we’re we’ll be well down the list for the top strikers across Europe.

If he joins he’ll get my full support like any player.

Not a proflific striker? I would suggest anyone posting his goals return with the subsequent lack of games is pretty prolific.

Fullkrug scored 3 in 18. Beto 11 in 60.

I think there's more to it than size.

I think a lot of people look at his poor PL season at Norwich when he was how old? 20? I believe he also played on the wing at Norwich in the PL with Pukki as the sole striker.

The only thing with Sargent for me is his recent injury record, it felt like he missed half of the season at Norwich last year and the year before that he only played 28/46 league games.

Maybe it was just one long injury midway through 23/24 that kept him out until midway through 24/25
Sargent would be a top signing His record is excellent and he is a big lad, technical.

I hope Tresor has a part to play for us .

Benson I can see leaving but we could do with that being permanent.
