Summer transfer window
Re: Summer transfer window
10m offer for lad from Watford turned down apparently
Re: Summer transfer window
Yep, I mentioned Stach for us a few weeks back. Longstaff is a solid signing too.
Sunderland have already spent £67m on their midfield, Xhaka would be a fairly exceptional signing on top of that.
Our midfield is so far off as it stands.

Re: Summer transfer window
Hi Vegas,
There's no one reliable source unless one of the clubs involved disclose the fee.
I find TM to be pretty reliable for actual transfers. But on the other hand their raison d'être i.e. current valuations of players (which I think are used by people playing FIFA) are often unreal.
An example: they rate Maxime Estève at €20m. Not even Levy would offer that today.
However, they say we paid €12m for him which I believe was roughly the case.
Journos presumably get their info from agents and when you get a broad consensus from the former I tend to think, rightly or wrongly, then I take that to be reasonably accurate. That said, some journos quote an amount which includes all potential add-ons which is, IMHO, misleading.

Re: Summer transfer window
Let's be honest, unless we got very, very lucky we could never sign a 20-goal a season striker. You have to average one in two and play all 38 games.Ziggy Stardust wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 9:21 amGet the feeling the same people who thought Gyokeres wasn't good enough for us think Sargent isn't either? Pretty sick of hearing we need a twenty goals a season striker! We are so far down the Q for that player is not funny. We need basically need a Wood type signing who will grow into that player if we manage to stay up.
Re: Summer transfer window
Leeds and Sunderland are certainly making signings and moves for players that I’m envious of. They’re getting the spine as strong as possible and we’ve a hell of a lot of work to do there.

Sassuolo and Italy striker Andrea Pinamonti is attracting interest from West Ham United, with London rivals Brentford also enquiring about the 26-year-old. (Standard)

Looking at last season’s leading scorers list in the PL it is interesting to see how a couple of clubs benefited hugely from scoring partnerships. Mbuemo and Wissa combined to score 39 goals for Brentford and Cunha and Larsen to score 29 for Wolves. Not surprisingly, Brentford have stated that they are not prepared to lose both strikers in this window and Wolves are keen to retain Larsen.

Re: Summer transfer window
At the end of the day it will all come down to club finances. Sunderland have signed 5 players all costing more than £17.5m each and are in the process of adding yet more high profile names.
Re: Summer transfer window
I don’t doubt they have more money than we do, and I wouldn’t expect us to be in the market for someone like Xhaka as Sunderland seem to be.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 12:25 pmAt the end of the day it will all come down to club finances. My point is that the spine of our team has already lost 2 of its very best players, and so far we’ve signed Tuanzebe on a free transfer. There’s a hell of a lot of work to do there.

This is exactly why I didn't want Sunderland to come up. They are a much bigger draw than Sheffield United and can definitely attract players we cant.
But if we can compete in a way Dyche had us doing, we can still have a chance of staying up.

Sunderland have great fans and they are fiercely loyal they will need them but imo we will finish above them. We have Super Scotty Parker who is a great draw.

A 32 year old Granit Xhaka @ £8.7 million is tremendous value.
I'm surprised a bigger club aren't interested, surely we could join the party at that price?

Sunderland have to sort out their defence yet. They have also gone for young players up to now so don't know if they will sink or swim. I think I read somewhere that they lose their entire midfield, or pretty much most of it, for AFCON.

Re: Summer transfer window
I hope Parker isn't thinking Cullen can be the main man in our midfield at this level. We've seen that he struggles at the higher level and doesn't have the physical attributes to compete. He's useful but we need a big upgrade in there.
Re: Summer transfer window
I doubt any of our current central midfielders have the physical attributes, strength or pace for the Premier League
Re: Summer transfer window
Cullen has the technique and the intelligence, but not the physical attributes. He can hold his own but he'll need a lot of help in there.
Laurent has the physical attributes, but not the technical ability. His passing was found wanting at Championship level many times but we got away with it.
Hannibal actually has a good mixture of both, but lacks the discipline at the moment and Parker didn't trust him in one of the deeper midfield roles. That can be worked on though and I suspect Hannibal will be the one who takes to the PL most naturally.
And that's all we've got for now. We're massively underpowered in the most important area of the pitch. Let's hope there is some good news on this front soon.

Re: Summer transfer window
We have been praising Parker for the past 4-5 months in the way he has steered us to promotion/100 points/30 clean sheets/man management etc
As we know, in his day he was one of the fiercest midfielders I had seen in this country, so lets assume, having managed in the PL already, that he knows first hand what is required in our midfield, if its to have a chance. Further to that I think the Board will back him. What I am confident we wont have pre the eve of the season, is a max exodus of our best players-unlike last year

Re: Summer transfer window
Good summary. Hannibal will be useful so I think we have 2 that could play regularly but they need real quality bringing in with them. From what I've seen of Parker I think he will want to invert last seasons one holding midfielder with two 8s quite often. So I think we we will spend big money on a big physical holder to play alongside Cullen.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 3:33 pmCullen has the technique and the intelligence, but not the physical attributes. Players with the temperament of Xhaka will struggle going from being part of a team that dominates games to being on the other side in a team being dominated
On the flipside he could be a leader that drives on players around him, and ups their game.
Though I feel predominantly if he is physically on the downturn himself it's hard to do this.

Re: Summer transfer window
Outstanding energy and stamina, and with his recently discovered knack for goals, perfect for SP’s advanced midfielder role. However, lacks the presence and range of passing to play deeper in the premier league as we’ve found out in the seasons he’s played there. Big miss overall and hard to replace.BleedingClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 4:39 pmjust out of interest how would you have described Brownhill in that list, genuine question, just curious.
