Re: Name the most obscure Burnley player
There can only be one who wins this. The worst player ever to play for us (in my opinion).
Mark Caughey 8 appearances in 1987, he wasn't fit enough and was terrible

I'd completely forgotten Wayne Hennessey had been with us. Did we have a left winger called Steve Slawson for a spell in the mid 90s? Sorry if already mentioned!

I used to know Ian when he was at Burnley and I was a kid. The name Manta was on account if his ears which gave his face the shape of a manta ray

Joseph Mills.
Played at home against Bolton on opening day for 2012/13 season and from memory I thought he was excellent at left back and bombing forwards and thought we had exciting wing backs for the season with Trippier at right back but hardly saw him after that.

Nearly all these obscure players fit into the ‘ahh, now you mention him’ category for me. But one player already named is somebody I had to look up recently after his name cropped up somehow, I had absolutely no memory of him - Stanislav Varga, central defender who came to us on loan in early 2008 from Sunderland aged 35, and actually made 10 appearances for us.

Still remember a 3-0 defeat away at Boothferry Park under Clive Middlemass where he didn’t even look like a goalkeeper’s cousin.

Always have him on loan when you start a FM2008 Burnley save and i always punt him off backlongsidetrumpet wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 5:00 pmNearly all these obscure players fit into the ‘ahh, now you mention him’ category for me. Re: Name the most obscure Burnley player
Was it Wayne Russell who played in the FA Cup game against Liverpool at Turf Moor - pulled off a decent save from either Rush or Fowler and we got a 0-0 draw
Not sure why Beresford didn't play but he was back for the replay at Anfield
I think it was Wayne Dowell who effectively got the Boxing Day home game v Port Vale abandoned - I seem to remember him going in for a slide tackle and aquaplaning across the waterlogged surface at which point the ref had seen enough

Think he made his debut against Arsenal in FA Cup, he was massive.longsidetrumpet wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 5:00 pmNearly all these obscure players fit into the ‘ahh, now you mention him’ category for me. Wiliams and Baird weren't the same eraCyrilEbokiPoh wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 3:10 pmVarga. Superb.
Around the era of Rhys Williams and Chris Baird.
Williams played under Coyle in 08-09 and missed the playoffs (did his loan expire?)
Baird played under Dyche when we were promoted in 14

My vote is Nick Pickering - lauded as an England international - played 3 or 4 times and was awful

Re: Name the most obscure Burnley player
He was due to be on the bench before Chaplow got his debut. He pulled up injured in the warm up allowing Chappy to get his chance ( only yts in the boot room who had his bag of kit with him) the rest is history he had a good career but wasn’t even making the starting line up for the reserves at the time.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 2:57 pmDebuted under Stan and played one more for Cotterill - both as a sub. And as mentioned above, first name Joel.

Re: Name the most obscure Burnley player
Chappy was just coming back from glandular fever too when he got that debut as a sub at Norwich in 2003. I thought Joel was forced to pull out through illness.blatherwickstattoos wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 7:35 pmHe was due to be on the bench before Chaplow got his debut. Still in touch with both Chappy and Pilky. Chappy still in
America settled now and pilky is bang into his fell running these days

Just remembered Martyn Busby, on loan from QPR He was a big unit in midfield thought we might have signed him at the time. I would agree with the comments re Mark Caughey the worst I've seen, saw him 3 or 4 times and he was consistently awful.
