I did take the odds, might be one of those bets where you wish you had gone bigger. Would pay for my season ticket next season rather than a few seasons.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 24, 2025 5:26 pmHope you didn’t spend too long looking since they are now long odds on with most High Street bookmakers (4/9 with William Hill).

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Another one to go is Caelan Cadamarteri - signed for Man City for an undisclosed fee. He's the younger of the two brothers and was still playing in the under-18s last season
Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Danny Rohl now left by "mutual consent", no surprise there !

What on earth must the Sheff Wed fans be thinking ahead of their new season. You can follow a team for decades upon decades and then one man ruins the club.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
It's not just the man, it's the whole process of defining who is and who isn't fit to own a league club.
The EFL should hang their heads in shame.
They could introduce rules to prevent chancers from taking on clubs, namely stating that any owner who can't pay the running costs, or sell to someone who can, will have the club taken over by the EFL.
They can then sell the club to a suitable candidate, and the chancer gets whatever is left once all outstanding debt is paid off.
I know it's wishful thinking, pie in the sky, but it wouldn't half deter some of the crooks infesting the game.

I get the point regarding the owner of Morecambe for example who prior to taking over Morecambe had been a director at 22 companies, 18 of which were ended by being dissolved, administration or liquidation.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 29, 2025 11:47 amIt's not just the man, it's the whole process of defining who is and who isn't fit to own a league club.

However for the Sheff Wed situation how can the EFL police that at the point of takeover? I don't remember an outroar happening when Chansiri got them to the Championship play off final.
Hopefully the new adjudicator will have powers to remove owners from clubs but how can the EFL be blamed for an owner who after 6 or 7 years of ownership decide to stop paying money?

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Those of us with longish memories can’t forget their sneering attitude when we tried to buy Marcus Tudgay off them in 2009 that why would he want to play for a club who couldn’t possibly sustain premier league football implying of course they were so different.
This will now be 8 seasons in 10 in the Prem whilst they haven’t played at that level for 25 years. The only annoyance for me is that they are likely to finish below Rovers this season.

"Sheffield Wednesday's players have been informed that their wages will be delayed for a third successive month, BBC Radio Sheffield understands.
There is now a possibility that they could refuse to play, with the new Championship season just 10 days away."

This is going sideways big time.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Sorry, but this is a grave situation that no fans should be having to deal with at any club. It is absolutely awful what is happening at that football club - stand shut reducing the capacity by a large number, no manager, players walked because they haven't been paid.claretbob wrote: ↑Tue Jul 29, 2025 3:36 pmThose of us with longish memories can’t forget their sneering attitude when we tried to buy Marcus Tudgay off them in 2009 that why would he want to play for a club who couldn’t possibly sustain premier league football implying of course they were so different.

I lived in that city for three years and if I have a soft spot for either of the two clubs, it's very much Sheffield United, but I feel so sorry for the Wednesday fans right now.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Feels like it's unravelling fast there, could this be the first 'big' club to properly go under?
A real shame too, I know loads of Wednesday fans, crazy how it's come to this.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Fully agree, Tony. There are rubbish fans supporting all clubs and we are no exception. But the vast majority of supporters stick by their club in England. I mean they don't gloryhunt. When it's in your blood you can't get it out. Of course, some will stay away when results are poor but then it's an expensive pursuit.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 4:19 pmSorry, but this is a grave situation that no fans should be having to deal with at any club. The Wednesday fans haven't done anything wrong here. But they're seeing their club come off the tracks.
I recall the farce at Blackpool back in 2014 when, if I recall correctly, their manager had just a handful of professionals a few days ahead of the first game of the season. A similar fate might well await whoever replace's Rohl.

Like I said on the Morecambe thread - something has got to be done to make football sustainable through the leagues.

I have a family member who travels all over the country watching Wednesday. They have potentially a massive following far in excess of Sheffield United. Unfortunately., this fiasco has the hallmarks of Readings problem without any solution in sight

I would think the Sheff Wed players would want to play in their Burnley 'trial' on Saturday.

If each person's most hated club went under, Turf Moor wouldn't be much fun on a wet Tuesday night in late November.

All things being equal, Wednesday are by far the biggest club in the city, but all things are very definitely not equal there right now.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 6:56 pmI have a family member who travels all over the country watching Wednesday. Henrik Pedersen has been appointed as their new manager - think he was already there.
Reports that Saturday's friendly against them could be off.

Yeah, he was Rohl's assistant. It's not like they could advertise the position, would be a bit tricky when it came to salary. £0.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jul 31, 2025 11:08 amHenrik Pedersen has been appointed as their new manager - think he was already there.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
The problem is there is no business model in football outside of the top 6 or 8 in the PL other than just 'cut your cloth'. The financial differential between the EFL and PL is now so big it requires hundreds of millions for a Championship side make the transition to the PL.
We were fortunate to be benefit from a number years in the PL before the gap was as big as it is now.
Sad for Wednesday fans who have followed the club all their lives.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Not in this BBC article that I can see but the Burnley Express say their players might go on strike.
https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/arti ... yplp7gy70o
Bannan, IMHO, their best player is out of contract and "it is unclear if he will return, although he has been training with the squad." Which suggests to me he would like to stay but not pay for free.
It would be a pity for us if the game is cancelled as a second match is very useful given our squad size.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
If the game is given the go ahead, would a coach company want to take the Shef Wed team, albeit on a short journey, if they weren’t going to get paid?.
