Decent run out. Looked decent enough with a back five. Just think we lacked in central midfield and up top. Still think we’re 2 or 3 players short. Hopefully we use our loan slots to bring in some quality.

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
Not really ratings but Hannibal & Cullen were immense 9`s probably, Sonne, Laurent and Foster really shouldn`t be near our starting 11 and they were 4`s rest of the team 6/7`s just wish we would pull the trigger more often in front of goal when the opportunity presents itself instead of continually passing

Interesting to see Edwards in a more central position - I suspect that could get the best out of him.

Defence looks fairly solid and organised, midfield still weak, still powder puff up front. We need the major signings to hit the ground running quickly: I hope Parker knows what his starting eleven is against Spurs because I don’t.

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
He did the things he does well, closed down, tackled, broke up play. But was very limited on the ball and offered next to nothing going forward.
I would say he was decent in what he did but struggled on the ball

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
I gave Foster 4 and I was definetly watching everything very closely. Absolutely no threat whatsoever to the opposition goal. If we want/ need goals they are not coming from him. Not seen any development or progress in his game since he arrived here. Would love to be proved wrong but I won't be.

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
Thought the Lazio players 'got to him' and they are experts at that. Once his concentration is disturbed his performance suffers. Will have to do something about it because if he's on the pitch it's going to happen every time.

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
Hannibal was a 7/8 for me . He played a few lovely passes splitting their defence . Tenacious but picked the wrong option a few times in dangerous areas. It will be very interesting to see him in a 3 with Cullen and Lesley if and when we utilise that shape.
Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
Hannibal makes himself available and is not afraid. When he made his big mistake, he chased all the way back, in a vain attempt to correct his error.
Well done him.
Well done him.

I hope not - I thought he was dreadful today. Sloppy passing and bullied off the ball - especially for their goal.Im_not_Robbie_Blake wrote: ↑Sat Aug 09, 2025 6:35 pmInteresting to see Edwards in a more central position - I suspect that could get the best out of him.
Before the subs I thought we looked decent - especially playing 5 at the back for the first time. We created a lot more in the first half than I thought we would in a 5-4-1 - bodes well for the PL. Need to take our chances though

Another one here that thought Foster had a very good first half.
Pretty much sevens all round except Weiss, Hartman and Walker 8’s, with Sonne and Ekdal 6’s.

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
As I don't know anything about Lazio was that their strongest team playing today, or was it a mixture of first team players and reserves?
(Allowing for all the substitutions).
It's hard to judge how well we did, if we were up against some of their reserve team

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
Hladky 6
Walker 7
Ekdal 7 - composed but well known lack of pace and anticipation cost him and nearly us via the pen
Esteve 6
Sonne 6
Hartman 8 - just lacking the final ball but against a quality Italian defence
Cullen 7
Laurent 6
Hannibal 7 - pressing was super
Anthony 7 - also brilliant on the press
Foster 7 - outshone Costallanos who came off the bench and was linked with us earlier in the summer
Weiss 7
A day where the defensive shape and the forward press were the highlights and bode well. Two years ago we had neither. This was after all near a full strength Lazio initially.
Ekdal will get his chance next week, of that there is no doubt. The press was excellent and this was clearly practice of “park the bus” tactics to try to keep solid and win 1-0 with a turnover or break. Trouble is, it also showed we are more likely to fall foul of the West Ham 2023 smash and grab. I sense we need more creativity than this line up offers. Hartman is a top 6 wingback IF he has a finished product (if he can pick out a man like Trippier he will be better than Trips was). But the Anthony/Hannibal pair don’t have a lot of assists in them at this level. Edwards, Tresor or Ramsey would be better but then we lose a bit of the pressing.
So for me, ok, this side for Spurs away is OK, but for Sunderland at home I’d want Edwards in for Sonne and an extra man forward. Otherwise I’ll be getting annoyed very quickly. Resisting overcautiousness will always be Scott’s challenge.

Re: Burnley v Lazio - Player Ratings
Hladky 6 - ok with his feet, untroubled with his gloves
Sonne 6 - kept it very safe in possession with almost everything going backwards, but did his job very well when the ball was on the opposite flank and attacked the back post - unlucky not to score actually.
Walker 8 - still got that searing pace and a class above everyone in possession
Ekdal 7 - generally good reading of the game and in possession, but any ball behind him exposes a real lack of pace. We'll be writing that an awful lot this season if he's the starter in that position I'm afraid.
Esteve 7 - will be absolutely fine at the highest level.
Hartman 7 - looks a top addition
Laurent 6 - worked very hard in front of the three central defenders and we looked very solid in that shape, but we know he's not got the quality in his passing for the league we're going into
Cullen 7 - same as Laurent, but with more quality in his passing. Again unlucky not to score in the first half.
Hannibal 6 - wasn't sure what mark to give him, but a 6 feels fair. Pressed aggressively as ever, but aside from one excellent ball to send Anthony in behind the full back, didn't look after the ball well enough generally
Anthony 7 - good pressing and looked sharp with the ball at his feet
Foster 6 - one moment where he controlled a long ball up to him and barged past a couple of defenders, and a few moments where he linked up well with runners around him, but otherwise on the periphery of everything
Weiss 7 - looks a big lad and pulled off the pen save and another good save from a header
A good test for the last friendly in which we looked very solid and composed in the 541 shape and had a few half chances around their goal that we were unlucky with. When Sonne pushed up to make it more of a 4231 structure, you can see how we can adapt it based on the opposition. The games this season will be incredibly right affairs, and there is a risk that those 0-0s from last season become lots of 1-0 defeats decided by one moment of quality. I just hope the new guys (and possibly another RWB and middle CB still to come in) get us on the right side of the margins.

Always difficult to score a friendly. I also have no idea how close to a decent Lazio team that was. Definite signs we will be more solid than last time. Scoring goals might be a problem. But wtf do I know. I thought we’d be mid table under kompany.

Some good showings. Hartland looks like he could be a top, top signing. Both Cullen & Walker stood out on several occasions.
The old problem on not taking are chances stood out too, but this was a friendly, and I think some of our football, against top opposition was pretty good.

Thought we played some pretty neat stuff and looked pretty solid. Their pen was an absolute freak deflection that brought it into their path, and their goal was really poor play from us from our corner.
I feel like set pieces for and against could be the key to whether we stay up or go down this season, as from our shape I think we will be hard to beat at least.
Positives: Hartman looked a player, and Walker instantly made our right hand side look a lot tougher. Anthony and Hannibal looked sharp. Ekdal did well and looked a lot fitter (despite his mistake).
Negatives: We created three or four "moments" as the manager would say, but the shot or final ball was found wanting. Maybe rustiness, but we are crying out for someone to just have the technical ability to hit the ball early. We are missing an X factor still. Remember Tella when he got the ball in those areas? The crowd would gasp in anticipation. We don't have anyone in the squad who makes me feel like that currently. I'm worried where the goals are going to come from.
Three weeks left to find another striker, creative midfielder and centre back. Loans maybe, but I still think we need more up top.
Hladky 7 (Weiss -7)
Sonne 7
Walker 8
Ekdal 7
Esteve 8
Hartman 8
Laurent 6
Cullen 7
Hannibal 7
Anthony 7
Foster 6
