In a normal world his conduct would put off potential buyers but this is football.

Liverpool fans who turned on Alexander Arnold for doing exactly what he agreed to do and helping them win things will gladly accept the signing of someone like this.

Love the idea, but I fear the message won’t be heard tho, because it’s only the absolutely massively rich clubs that can fight back. We couldn’t even think about sending a message.

I do get a perverse thrill in seeing Newcastle put in a position they’ve put other clubs in, clubs that don’t have the means to do what Newcastle are doing (and I think they’ll cave eventually).

Are clubs, in theory, allowed to put a player on gardening leave for the duration of a contract?

Players have all the power now, the balance needs to be redressed. There should be real consequences for any players refusing to play for their clubs without good reason, such as the Sheffield Wednesday saga. I don't think Newcastle can let him rot in the reserves either. I think if they do that for a year the player is allowed to cancel his contract.

It is odd when they took over there was a lot of noise about what they are going to do and theee was lots of noise last season about the new stadium etc. this season it has gone very quiet don’t even mention the stadium anymore, not sure they have the finances that we think they do.

It's not the same though is it ? Tarks had a gentlemans agreement with Brentford and they were trying not to honour it.
Also a member of his family (mum I think) was seriously ill at the time and he wanted to get back up North to be near them.

I wouldn't say that. Newcastle haven't backed down by accepting Liverpool's opening offer newcastle from the start I've steadfastly kept their valuation (high or low that's debatable). Newcastle are well within their rights to value their players however they wish & if that's perceived as behaving big that's just the way it is. More clubs should do it instead of letting other clubs ride roughshod.

Never said Newcastle should back down on price, but they need to accept that if a bigger club comes in for a player and the player is interested in the move saying that a player is not for sale is never gonna wash and will 9/10 lead to situations like they have now. A sensible approach similar to how we dealt with Trafford should be used

1 - Player who honours his contract while not being in the team is stealing a living.
2 - Player honours his contract and leaves at the end of it is denying his club a transfer fee
3 - Player who wants to move mid-contract, guaranteeing his club a few is told he should honour his contract
