Just watched the MOTD Premier League preview. All pundits have Sunderland down as the highest league finish of a newly promoted team.

In your opinion who should we sign that would give us a chance?
Despite Parkers failings previously in the PL, I do think he will give us a real chance at survival IF he’s supported in the market.

I like the business we’ve done so far but I think we need a big athletic centre half, preferably one who can score a few from corners and a Brownhill replacement.

Beyer has been out forever, Worrall isn’t the answer, Ekdal is a good defender but he’s too slow and small for the physicality of the PL. Tuanzebe can’t stay fit for two minutes and hasn’t played centre half in a long while. I think Humphreys is going to be a brilliant centre half but inexperienced, been out injured for a while (and still is) and not sure about two left footers.

I saw someone mention Kurt Zouma, assuming he’s in decent nick I’d be all over that. I see Liverpool are signing 2 centre halves, Joe Gomez loan? Although that’s another injury concern but he’s only 28, ton of experience and athletically capable. Axel Disasi has no future at Chelsea, barely featured for Villa on loan. Could we loan him? He’s a bit clumsy but he’s a physical beast in both boxes. Tomiyasu is a free agent ex Arsenal. Newcastle just signed a centre half, is Lascelles available? Brighton have about 8 centre halves, Adam Webster or Dunk id take depending on who’s available.

Those are just a few cheaper names from the PL off the top of my head.

“Cheaper names” yet loans like Gomez might cost us £7-10m in wages & loan fees. If we get relegated we’ve nothing to show for it and then need to spend to replace.

Suspect we’d be more likely to take a gamble on a younger, untested player but agree we’re still short at CB and CM.

It’s Thursday!!!!!

Traditionally the day things happen. Will there be sales, loans, deals and dirty deeds done dirt cheap.

Two days to season Kick Off, it’s getting exciting

Or will it be just like any other day.

Random account on twitter linking Adewumi with Cercle Brugge. Would be a decent move if it's a loan but but not clear. No idea of the reliability.

I've have two concerns. First is the size of the squad. From the outside looking in, it looks vastly bloated and i'd imagine very difficult to manage. It was the same in the last PL campaign and although I feel the board have learnt a lot of lessons, this is one I'm not sure about. The other concern is the shear amount of injured players we have, and it doesn't at present appear to have been helped by some of the recent additions track records. It will be interesting to see the starting line up for Saturday but i'm more than a little apprehensive after my initial thoughts regarding our recruitment in this window thus far.

Bet Victor have Burnley priced up at 33/1 as a probable destination for Vardy so that is probably a non starter to be honest.
Yeah, no links really, I was just responding to the points made on here about Vardy being a potential target.

No he wouldn’t. He was behind Worrall, did Ekdal play a single game for us last season?

He’s a 27 year old centre half who wasn’t deemed good enough last season and loaned out to a poor Dutch side, has also looked out of his depth in the PL last time.

Now because he hasn’t played for us in ages he’s suddenly better than CJ and our saviour?

I’d be very surprised if Ekdal was still here at the end of the window never mind starting PL games for us or anyone else. We’re in deep trouble if we’re relying on Ekdal.

We need a right sided centre half, badly.
I'd say you need to prepare to be surprised.
Options atm at rcb are Ekdal, Worrall, Walker, Tuanzebe,
1, while we have 2 from 4 recognised rcb there, Walker is not going to be starting there,
2, Ekdal looked very capable still with some potential until suffering what looked a very bad injury, and struggled with niggles throughout he's rehab. But has figured in pre season and atm seems to be a little bit favoured by SP.
3, I think we're all agreed Worrall is simply far too slow and risky arguably even in the Championship, let alone Premier league, however having had a seemingly full pre season, he has a chance.
4, Tuanzebe doesn't seem to have figured much pre season and there's a question mark on he's fitness, although when we signed him imo was nailed on for the position, firstly because he looks a bit of a unit, has Premier league experience, and just looked a safe bet, having just lost CJER.
5, Humphreys apparently nowhere near fit.

I'd say Ekdal on that basis looks favourite, given we're extremely unlikely to sign anyone else at this stage, to be starting Saturday and given a fair chance, under the Parker management.

Believe he has not had a proper pre season with Chelsea , or played in any friendly games. Been training on his own away from Mareskar's starting squad. If he was match fit he would have been at least a sub v Lazio
Likely to have been training on he's own because Chelsea thought there was a good chance he'd be leaving given the options they have up front. I'm hoping he won't be far off starting soon if not at spurs, or will likely share the no 9 position with foster until either are deemed fully fit to play at least 75 minutes.

Ekdal must have had a good pre season to be in contention. Jury still out for me, I’m not one who can make judgements on players I’ve only see play 3 times. Ekdal played was it 9 games against some championship cannon fodder and then mysteriously disappeared for the rest of the season. Struggled in 8 appearances in the PL and couldn’t maintain fitness. Last season found himself at lower end of the Dutch league.

Context needed on that .. the whole defence struggled that season . Probably due in part to the way we were set up.

Ekadal was injured at the start of the season and was not back until November December time. He was sent out on loan to play games as it was going so well with Esteve and CJ with Wirral in reserve it was unlikely he would get much game time.

CJ was around 6th or 7th choice at the start of last season ignoring fitness.

Esteve
O’Shea
Bayer
Ekdal
Worrall
Delcrois

O’Shea was sold, Bayer, Ekdal and Delcrois were already injured and then Worrall broke his foot/ toe allowing CJ to play at Sunderland.

I just ran into a couple of Southampton supporters in a sale room in Salisbury this afternoon. They were quite derisory about Ugochukwu. Not so much so about Broja but did say that he spends a lot of time being injured. And so we will just have to wait and see.

Parker on Burnley's upcoming business
Burnley head coach Scott Parker on whether there will be any more business:

"There are areas we are looking at. As always, these transfer windows bring their challenges. There are players you want to bring in or areas of the squad that you want to constantly to improve, but there are lots of variables that go within that.

"We have a big squad at the moment, so there's no doubt some will be leaving as well. In the next two weeks of the window we're looking to try and do some more business to strengthen."

And the issue of a current large squad could lead to our demise

Going to be difficult to move on players that are not seen as "good enough" for us

Being a ex good midfielder doesn't always translate into signing good midfielders as across the county on the coast the seasiders are finding out with steve bruce although PV only scored 1 Tuesday night.

For what it’s worth, I think Ugochukwu will be a big factor in whether we stay up or not this season. He’s got the profile to make a huge difference for us.

For what it’s worth, I think Ugochukwu will be a big factor in whether we stay up or not this season. He’s got the profile to make a huge difference for us.
Based on what ? Last season ?

Being a ex good midfielder doesn't always translate into signing good midfielders as across the county on the coast the seasiders are finding out with steve bruce although PV only scored 1 Tuesday night.
Anything wrong with our midfield last season?

I'm not sure on the relevance behind that question what happened last season in terms of how we'll get on in the PL is irrelevant & no JB who contributed massively last season. The point I was making is that just because SP was a good midfielder it shouldn't be automatically assumed he's got a good eye on midfielders as Steve Bruce was a good defender but I think in the last 3 games they have conceded 8 goals. You aren't automatically qualified as a good player to manager expert in recruiting same positions.

Why don't you counter the points if you disagree with them. Do you think good ex midfield football players automatically become good at recruiting in that same position? I can name plenty of managers who played in a certain position but hopeless recruiting players in the same position they used to play.

Because you're too good at trolling with your straw man arguments and misunderstanding of correlation and causation.

Steve Bruce, the well-known midfielder, yeah?

That famous partnership in midfield with Gary Pallister?

I find your motivation beyond strange.
