Michael Oliver
On VAR last night - turns down the most blatant handball red card ever for Bournemouth.
Michael Oliver today - doesn’t give a penalty for a blatant penalty.
I have not missed this league.

It would havebeen abut softish but the other way round and that is given - its one of those 'he felt the touch and was entitled to go down' moments.
Re: Michael Oliver
I haven't seen it, but tim sherwood thought it was a pen.
Must have been a blatant pen in that case.

He has never given us a decision against any of the supposed “big”clubs. Only good win I can remember with him in the middle was a 0-3 at Crystal Palace. That had more to do with how dreadful they were and no contentious calls to make.
BTW. It was a pen. A shove in the back and the ball was live. The fact the ball had already gone beyond the players is irrelevant, it was live.

He’s a shite ref, most of them are, but isn’t the reason we lost today.
Re: Michael Oliver
Parker hasn't said a word about this apparent blatant penalty in the two interviews I've seen (kindly posted by Vegas).

Re: Michael Oliver
No way a penalty for me, the ball had gone past Anthony, complete stupidity for someone to decide to shoulder barge Anthony but there were no grounds for a penalty for me. I'd have been raging had a similar situation resulted in a penalty against us.
The only thing Oliver got wrong today (watching from TV abroad) is not booking Romero after 3 fouls, 2 of which were cynical.

Re: Michael Oliver
A Burnley player deliberately taken out when the ball was "live" in the penalty area? OK nobody would have reached it before it went out of play. If it was given and the national press went ballistic, on what grounds? If it was at the other end and the national press went ballistic there would probably have been an apology from Howard Webb and as the aforementioned national press went even more ballistic it would have lead to a widening of accountabilities to the political poodle that is the proposed Independent Regulator to ensure that referees always toe the big boys line! They would probably only get 8 seconds to make a decision anyway!

Re: Michael Oliver
I've just seen the replay of the penalty incident
I cant think of any reason why it isn't a penalty
It's stupid. And it's a foul
The location of the ball is completely irrelevant bacuse the ball was live
I'd be very interested to hear from those who think it isn't a penalty exactly what law of the game they are basing this on

Chocked on one easy decision. No attempt to play the ball by Porro it was a stonewall penalty for the barge on Anthony.

It’s one of those anywhere else on the pitch a free kick. No attempt to play the ball.

Re: Michael Oliver
It was a funny one. The ball was well past them both, but it did look a deliberate knock down.
Your not going to see them given, unless it's Arsenal/Man UTD a goal down in the 15th minute of time added.
We'll have far, far worse refs than Oliver this season, who did pretty well today.

You forget November 2023 when he dismissed an Arsenal player in the game at the Emirates which Arsenal won 3-1.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 5:24 pmHe has never given us a decision against any of the supposed “big”clubs. Re: Michael Oliver
The commentators said “it’s easy to give that one outside the box”
If you give it outside you give it inside, a foul is a foul simple as that. I hate this league.

If that was up the other end and it was given, this board would have gone into absolute meltdown.
Was it f**k a penalty.

Poor officiating today. Reminded me what it’s like with officials at this level when we come up against bigger clubs…. He doesn’t want to upset them.

Re: Michael Oliver
So what that he 'probably' wasn't going to get the ball, it was still a foul and still a penalty.
It was similar to the Mason Mount penalty England v France in the last World Cup. Mount was probably never going to get the ball but he was barged in the back...VAR gave a pen for that

Re: Michael Oliver
Homer.
Should have given a yellow card at least for the forearm into the back of Foster's neck early in the first half.
Penalty?, according to the laws of the game, yes.
Away at Spurs?, unlikely.
Refs say yes it was a foul anywhere else on the pitch, but nowhere else would it merit a unopposed kick at goal from 12 yards - quote Dermot Gallagher on 'Ref Watch' SSN, a couple of years ago.

Re: Michael Oliver
It should have been a penalty. The player was taken out and I've not seen any law yet that indicates that is acceptable. Maybe it was improble for the player to get it, but that is bad judgement by the defender.

Re: Michael Oliver
Romero committed 3 cynical and bookable fouls all worthy of yellow cards yet Oliver did nothing Gonna be a long frustrating season.

Re: Michael Oliver
Romero should've been booked after about twenty minutes and it was a penalty. We'll probably see a softer penalty given today.

He’s made a career of getting big decisions wrong and yesterday was no exception. Mad how someone who has reffed in this league for that long still gets overawed by the big clubs.

Re: Michael Oliver
I can't see how people don't think this was a penalty.
It was an insane decision from Porro.
Just because it was highly unlikely that Anthony was going to reach the ball it doesn't stop the fact that it was a foul.

There's not enough in it to get that excited about it as a penalty appeal.

Re: Michael Oliver
The fact it "may" have been unlikely Anthony reaches the ball (very debatable as if you watch the clip through the ball is starting to slow and Porro isn't a million miles away from it) wasn't taken in to account as Oliver clearly said no pen within a millisecond of the "challenge". 100% there will be way softer pens given over the season for fouls in the box.

Not in the slightest relevant, so long as the ball is still in play - which it wasHolmechapel wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 9:58 pmThere wasn’t a cat in hells chance of us reaching that cross ,it’s never a pen move on.
Free kicks are often given for off the ball incidents, otherwise you could just clatter into players randomly whilst play had moved on.
The fact that it is inside or outside the area has no bearing on the decision according to the rules.
I’m sure it wouldn’t have affected the result but under the laws of the game I can’t see any reason not to give a penalty.
