Ken Shuttleworth
Former Lancashire pace bowler has died, aged 80.
He formed a great opening pace attack with Peter Lever in the late 1960s.

Very decent player...I could still name all that side....unlike now where most aren't around long enough to be remembered.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
Outstanding bowler for Lancs and I saw him play once for Burnley in the Lancashire League at Nelson and he got a five for in a Burnley win.
As lakedistrict said, he formed a really top opening attack with Peter Lever and sadly both have passed away this year.

Don't think it's been mentioned on the board but former Australia captain and former Lancashire coach Bob Simpson has also recently passed away.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
More very sad news. Ken Shuttleworth was a very under-rated player and as others have said formed a formidable partnership with Peter Lever in the late '60's, ably supported by David Hughes and Flat Jack Simmons. RIP.

Remember my dad taking me to see Bob Simpson play for Accrington against East Lancs back in the day. Its hard to imagine nowadays but there was a massive crowd in attendance that day just to witness greatness.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 11:45 amDon't think it's been mentioned on the board but former Australia captain and former Lancashire coach Bob Simpson has also recently passed away.

Remember watching Ken bowl many times in my early teens.
As has been mentioned, in a side whose names we all remember so well, when Lancs such a good one day side.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
I never saw him play for Lancs but he had a v good spell at Leicestershire later whilst I was living there and a member at Grace Road (Ray Illingworth inspired "glory period" of old stagers for Leic). A young David Gower just coming into their time in that period. Ken Higgs also had a pretty successful spell for Leic in that same period.
I enjoyed watching him bowl for Leic. In 1977 (my last year there) he took 27 County Championship wickets at under 20 per wicket (Ken Higgs 38 at around 25).
Some good fast bowlers out of Lancs over my cricket watching days and Ken Shuttleworth was one of them.
R.I.P. to a fine fast bowler

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
Despite living in the south I was brought up to support Burnley and LCC. I've never been to a Lancs home match but my Dad took me to see them play against southern counties, above all in one-day games. Ken Shuttleworth was part of my youth, part of a Lancashire team that shone in the 60 and 55 over competitions.
RIP Mr Shuttleworth.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
Yes he was ecc + Dudleston, Paddy Clift and Birkenshaw. Chris B still had a dual sporting career but I think not with Carlisle then but Donny which was less of a travel for him in the overlap I guess. Not one to be generally over complementary to Yorkies but Ray Illingworth was still a very good bowler and superb captain then. They won their first ever County Championship in that period (1975 I think).

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
RIP to Ken Shuttleworth, one of many outstanding Lancashire cricketers of his time.
RIP also to Bob Simpson. At a time when I don't think England had a top leg break bowler, I loved seeing Bob Simpson in the Lancashire League. Although I was never quite 'good enough' at cricket I loved my leg break bowling. Loved seeing the ball break as a wrist spinner. Could never get to the same level of spin when trying to bowl off spin, although bowling round the wicket got much more bite. Another Accy pro I loved watching was Eddie Barlow, a great competitor, and then of course they had Warney.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
Eddie Barlow was sub pro for Burnley one day in the 1970s. I was at football but my dad was there and was just my dad's kind of cricketer. He bowled through at one end and then carried his bat without, as my dad said, ever lifting a ball off the ground. I'm not sure what my dad would have made of the likes of Jos Buttler and t20 cricket to be honest.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 21, 2025 12:25 amRIP to Ken Shuttleworth, one of many outstanding Lancashire cricketers of his time.

The great all-rounder had just been one of the stars of the England v Rest of the World test series.
My greatest memory of the day is that after bowling throughout and carrying his bat, he was very happy to chat to a few of us teenagers for quite a while after the game.
What a player, what a day - what a man.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
My personal memory of Eddie Barlow at the Turf came in 1964 when he was bowled by Charlie Griffith for 0, thus becoming the first of Charlie's 144 league wickets that season. That day in 1970, I was at a pre-season friendly at Luton on my way home from holiday.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Thu Aug 21, 2025 10:00 amYes. A memorable afternoon.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
Excellent opening bowler both in Country Championship and one day (50 over) games
Was lucky to be at the famous game v Gloucester when Bond and Hughes saw Lancashire through around 9 o’clock with no floodlights
“ if I can see them then I will hit them “ remark by Hughes against John Mortimore

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
Great memories of the lancs side and Ken , who got an injury in the 74 Gillette final v a cracking Kent side and couldn’t bowl . Lancs collapsed and Kent wobbled but easily won. Ken was a great 1 day bowler and bloody quick ,could hold a bat too though never seemed to reach his full potential . His run up oddly rewinded me of Truman .
My grandad knew him and told a great story of Ken and Rookie Engineer helping sozzled booze hound Andy Kennedy on the coach after some 1 dayer.
RIP

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
He obviously wouldn't have been the first, but Eddie Barlow was the first pro I'd seen actively coaching his teammates in the field. When he wasn't bowling, he was in the slips, doing all the field placings, and generally never stopped talking. I remember it annoyed some, but I found it fascinating.
Accrington also had a talented amateur leg spinner, Eddie Robinson, who also pro'd at other clubs.
We were blessed at that time with the quality of cricket and cricketers in the Lancashire League.

Re: Ken Shuttleworth
The year that Barlow was at Accrington, the league also had players such as Seymour Nurse, Basil Butcher and Charlie Griffith. It was a different time but a lot of the world’s best cricketers graced the league.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 21, 2025 11:07 pmHe obviously wouldn't have been the first, but Eddie Barlow was the first pro I'd seen actively coaching his teammates in the field. I don't suppose Ken Shuttleworth will mind sharing his "in Memoriam" thread with all those cricketing greats mentioned above.
Interestingly, I checked and he played in the First Test against the Rest of the World in 1970, a series dominated by Sobers and Barlow.
