In the end a richly deserved victory that was grounded in a lot of hard graft and tenacity and a little bit of quality when it mattered.

Dubravka - 7 - I thought he was a little slow off his line for the second first half chance Sunderland had, but he'd already made one very good save by then and apart from a couple of hairy moments with the new 8 second rule he was pretty solid.

Walker- 9 - a couple of slightly questionable moments in the first 10 minutes but after that outstanding, using all his experience to snuff out danger whenever it threatened to arise. Ekdal - 9 - another to settle in and then be absolutely flawless. For someone whose place has been questioned, this was a gutsy and assured performance.
.
Esteve - 8 - a couple of poor decisions, but scrambled well at times and also covered well when needed.

Hartman- 7 - still adapting to the intensity of the Premier League but showed enough to suggest he'll be an excellent addition. Some lovely touches, not least the pass that unlocked the space for the opening goal.

Cullen - 9 - bossed a midfield including Xhaka and gave the perfect response to those wondering if he had then physicality for this league. Efficient around the park, amd took his goal with aplomb before providing an outstanding first time pass for the second.

Ugochukwu- 7 - still getting up to speed but once he'd settled did plenty to suggest he'll be an effective foil for Cullen in thr engine room.

Hannibal - 8 - I thought his energy and intensity were the cornerstone of this performance and he carried the ball nicely too.

Brunn Larsen - 6 - not much of an attacking threat but showed plenty of know how to help us manage Sunderland's threats until he tired.

Anthony - 8 - a little bit diffident in the first half and should have buried his header on the stroke of half time, but the flick for the first goal was delightful and he finished his own goal with impressive composure, and as we've come to expect he worked like a trojam throughout.

Foster - 9 - worked phenomenally hard, gave the centre halves no peace and was a little unlucky not to score.

Sonne - 7 - another to suggest he's got slightly more about him than others might think. Helped block up the right side.

Laurent- 7 - we know what we get with Laurent- not always the most quality on the ball but once again he won the hussle today.

Tchaouna - not on long enough to mark but this was a promising cameo. Looks to have some quality and the physicality for the Premier League.

Worrall Flemming - did what we needed them to do.

After a fairly even first half that Sunderland shaded on both performance and chances, we controlled the second half impressively and in truth the last 20 minutes were remarkably comfortable even before Anthony clinched the game. Perhaps the confidence Sunderland had from last week helped them and they looked a more incisive, coherent team for much of the first half- but apart from two largely self inflicted chances our endeavour, intensity and discipline held them largely at arms length, whilst we carried an occasional threat ourselves.

We needed a goal and it was a bonus we got it so early in the second half - and from then on, roles reversed with Burnley looking the more comfortable in their own skin and Sunderland looking increasingly frustrated as they tried to force it. The fact that they were so obviously outrun by Burnley is a huge positive for us and a cause for concern for Sunderland.

This wasn't flawless- and given Sunderland are one of the weaker sides in the league, our occasional struggles underscored the need for further reinforcements, but the basic template looks much better than two years ago and it gives us a chance - if we do go down it won't be for lack of running, effort or heart.

Dubravka 7 - Important save in the first 5 minutes, good clearances and good command of his area and important punches when under pressure.

Walker 8 - Very good today defensively, that pace is still there. Great run and feed into Cullen for the second goal.

Ekdal 8 - Much improved from last week, although not exposed as much, read the game well, calm in possession.

Esteve 7 - More like the Steve we know and love, hope it’s cramp and nothing more.

Hartman 7 - Steady away, nothing fancy, defensively less exposed than last week. and if it needs banging away, away it goes.

JBL 5 - first half shocking, looked like he didn’t know whether he was a wing back or a winger. Second half better.

Cullen 8 - busy as always first half didn’t really get going, second half, great goal and even better assist. The chant is a cracker too.

Ugochukwu 7 does the ugly stuff, impressed at how well he got about the pitch

Hannibal 7 - another who does the ugly stuff, presses energetically, puts himself and rattles people, lacking creatively, but works his socks off.

Anthony 8 - another one who doesn’t stop running, he looked absolutely gassed at the end of the game. Lovely lay off in the build up to the first goal and a fantastic finish for the goal.

Foster 7 ran the channels, held the ball, finished a disallowed goal, tracked back,

Sonne 6 - did fine
Laurent 6 - did sound
Worrall 6 - solid
Tchouana 7 - lovely cameo, looks to have something about him.

Parker - much improved from last week, good half time team really, good substitutions, not sure about JBL. Overall very positive.

I said last week we had to have players at 7’s and 8’s if we were to compete at this level. Very much on it today. Stayed in the game and then two moments of absolute quality won the game. Great to have a win on the board this early. UTC

Dubravka 7
Bruun-Larsen 6
Walker 8
Ekdal 9
Esteve 8
Hartman 8
Cullen 9* - was going to give Ekdal MOTM until that sublime pass for Anthony’s goal.
Lesley 7
Hannibal 7
Anthony 9
Foster 8

Sonne 6
Laurent 7

That was a thoroughly enjoyable display, and a game in truth we controlled for the vast majority. Other than the couple of chances we gave up early in the first half we bossed the rest of the game, particularly 2nd half.

Really liked our shape today which was definitely 4 at the back but useful to see us drop to a 5 when Sunderland were forcing an attack. The shape/set up of the team looks so much better than it did two years ago.

I still feel goals may be hard to come by, but our shape does seem to be more of a foundation to build on this time round.

Overall, this was a really positive performance and importantly we’ve taken maximum points against a team who will be down there with us. We didn’t say that too many times in the VK Prem season. Nice to get a win so early into our PL season. It’s taken us 8-10 games in previous seasons to chalk that one off. With the tough fixtures we have coming up this is an excellent result.

Dubravka - 7 - Solid.
Walker - 8 - Legs haven’t gone. Pleased we played him RB, why have one of the best in the world in that position (once upon a time of course) and then not play him there.
Ekdal - 8- Won everything
Esteve - 7 - Solid as usual
Hartman - 7 - Going to be a cult hero.
Larsen - 6 - Quiet but diligent in his defensive work.
Cullen - 9 - Fantastic second half, but actually thought he was uncharacteristically sloppy at times first half.
Ugochukwu- 9 - Faded as he tired, but I thought he was exactly what we will need in there. So strong, muscles opposition of the ball with just a lean of his shoulder. Think he will become one of our most important players.
Anthony - 9 - MOM - He is so criminally underrated. Works hard, his first touch is insane and that finish was perfect. Needed to put it high to stop the defender clearing it, was a hard finish but made it look easy.
Hannibal - 7 - Worked his backside off, but again, sloppy at times first half.
Foster - 8 - Looks better in the PL, when the game is less tough and tumble with defenders and he can drop off, collect the ball and run at defenders. If he can add the ability of 6-7 goals to his game this season is an asset I didn’t think we had in the squad.

Sonne - 7 - solid
Laurent - 7 - what he lacks in technical ability makes up for in strength and running. Useful backup in there.

Dubravka 8 - big save early doors
Walker 8 - could be the difference this season
Ekdal 8 - handled them really well today
Esteve 8 - looked like last season
Hartman 8 - really like him already, think he has another gear
Cullen 9 - superb performance
Ugochukwu 8 - excited to see how he fares when fully up to speed
Hannibal 7 - unbelievable work rate, hope he can clean the passing up.
Larsen 5 - worked hard enough but quality in the ball wasn’t there and played almost as a second right back first half. Wasn’t wingbacks first half anyway.
Anthony 8 - grafted his backside off, quality assist and goal.
Foster - 7 - wish that goal would have stood for him , he worked hard and showed nice glimpses again, does a lot of the hard work a lot of the time only to let himself down with the easy part , usually a pass

Subs -

Sonne - 7 handled himself well
Laurent- 8 - I’m critical of his limitations on the ball quite often and I think we all know he lacks that quality especially at this level , however the running power and sheer determination helped see us through the end of the game , very good

Special mention to Worrall for his cameo today. Another who has been written by many…. He showed fantastic leadership and helped to marshal the defence through at the death. He’s got great experience and could well suit playing ‘backs to the wall’ football when it suits. Had that been Ben Mee coming off the bench at the end to help get us over the line I’m sure we would have heard lots of positive comments about it.

Dubravka - 7 - Never fully tested, but solid throughout
Walker - 7 - Started a little sloppily, but assured for most of the game and he’s definitely still very quick
Ekdal - 8 - His type of game I’d imagine. We didn’t allow much space in behind and he coped excellently with what Sunderland had to offer
Esteve - 8 - Solid throughout
Brun-Larsen - 5 - Thought he struggled and looked short of match fitness
Hartman - 8 - Class act. Lovely ball started the move for first
Cullen - 9 - Fantastic. One of the best games he’s played at this level.
Ugochukwu - 7 - Clearly not yet fully fit, but gave us an air of solidity and neat and tidy throughout.
Hannibal - 6 - Sloppy at times and it felt a bit like a few games last season where he seemed too pre-occupied winding up the opposition.
Anthony - 8 - Quiet-ish first half, but class when it counted second half.
Foster -7 - Thought he led the line well and did well despite often being isolated.

Lauren - 7 - Helped get us up the pitch when we needed it.
Sonne - 6 - Did what was needed.

Dubravka 7-was there when required early on, then not much to do
Walker 8-a powerhouse and organiser. What a signing
Ekdal 8, growing nicely in the team. Great game today
Esteve 8-more composed than at Spurs. Has become more physical than last season
Hartman 7-looks to be very polished and consistent. A great find
Cullen 8-a true captains performance and great goal
Ugochukwa 8-going to be massive for us when fully fit. JUst what we need and compliments Cullen
Hannibal 7-more disciplined than at Spurs. I thought he shoulLd not have started but he gave a great performance
Anthony 8-brilliant goal and good assist and grew into game. Thought he might have been subbed but well done Scotty for keeping him on
Foster 8-my man of the match. Some great runs and laying off. Unlucky to have goal disallowed. Cant believe some have given him a 6
Larsen 6-poor first half, improved second half. Think Tchouma will eventually take his place

Laurent 6-did a good job when on
Sonne 6-good move to bring him on, and did well
Tchouama 7-early involvement in our second goal. I love his directness and pace which he showed at Spurs too

Tchaouna looked pretty good too. Very happy with that today. The experience of Dubravka and Walker may prove key this year and I thought the other new signings showed lots of positives.
Glad to see them lot fall back down to earth as well. I think they were expecting to just just turn up and win today and that under no circumstances should they be getting beat by Burnley. Their points total was nearer to Oxford’s in 17th last year than it was ours and they’d do well to remember the state they were in not too long ago.

Mad.

Mind you I think Hannibal's contribution today is being a bit underplayed. He may sometimes lack a touch of composure but he was absolutely everywhere and his tenacity, intensity and running was the bedrock of that performance. Apart from anything Cullen's goal owes everything to Hannibal running across the line of the shot and taking two defenders out of the equation.

Watch the goal again. If anything Hannibals run nearly causes the shot to be blocked. He basically runs into the path of the shot bringing the defender with him.

Not a criticism though, his pressing is vital for us. Also think his first touch could help create us some chances this season I'm transition. It's usually very good and means he can move the ball quickly.

Nah. He drags the defenders across towards the near post. The defender gets himself in the line of the shot otherwise.

Dubravka 8 - looked solid, commanded his box and one good save to prevent us going 1-0 down
Walker 9 - calming influence, very good judgement of what to do, liked his little burst of pace
Ekdal 8 - won many key aerial balls and good blocks
Esteve 7 - comfortable in possession, a little hesitant until he grew into the match
Hartman 7 - efficient and one or two promising forward thrusts
Brun Larsen 6 - struggled to get into the game, looked a passenger today
Cullen 9 - unruffled, watched and waited for his chances to win the game for us
Ugo 7 - took a while to get into the game, can't remember him losing possession or misplacing any passes when he did
Hannibal 8 - great energy and no little skill.
Anthony 8 - impressive will to get us forward and get into positions to score
Foster 8 - strong physical performance and always looking to link up play. I think most of us would have given him that goal.

Lauren 7 - in the game a lot when he came on and certainly showed he can play against teams like Sunderland
Sonne 7 - played his part in keeping us in control with a safe and steady performance.

Great team performance

It literally goes under the 2 of them as it finds its way into the far corner.

The defender gets nowhere near it but for Hannibals run which he matches.

I thought Ekdal was excellent today - even better than his defensive partner. Cullen was superb, as usual. My MOM goes to Ekdal as I really wasnt expecting it. Cullen is a steady 8/10 every week. Ekdal hasnt been anywhere near starting let alone performing like that today. He was immaculate.

Dubravka 7 One very good save early on.
Walker 7 Solid. How have we managed to sign him?
Ekdal 8 Didn’t put a foot wrong.
Esteve 7 A solid run out.
Hartmann 7
Cullen 8 Probably his best performance in a Burnley shirt.
Les 7 Could be the perfect foil for Cullen
Hannibal 7 Tireless
JBL 6 That’s not his position
Foster 7 Not a clue why his goal was disallowed
Anthony 8 He’s looking comfortable at this level, albeit against a poor Sunderland team

Sonne 7 Better than JBL in that role
Laurent 7 Extra legs exactly when needed.

I thought the same. Even accused of not being able to pass when his one touch passes in the first half were sublime.

Hannibal 7 needs to chill a bit, going to get sent off in this league.
Anthony 9

First half we matched them, they had a couple of early chances, I was behind Cullen when he hit his shot and I was already out of my seat before it hit the back of the net, he was just short of a 10 today, well done Mr Parker, excellent result considering their result last week, next up Manpoo

Excellent afternoon. Lots of positives. We look a lot more suited to the Premier League this season, something highlighted nicely by the subs we introduced. Every one of them played their part, and looked physically capable of seeing the game out. The only negative was JBL. He looked a long way off the pace. Loum looks an interesting signing - he could be a Semenyo type.

Looked half a yard off the pace in the first half but apart from early doors we weren’t really troubled and should have been one up - Foster’s goal should certainly have stood. What we really missed in the first half was Brownhill. Second half was defined by the early goal and then it was like watching us last season. Thought we went to a back 5 a bit too early but then we still got the clincher so no matter. Two really good goals today and solid at the back. Great to see, with the caveat of course that we were a way better team than Sunderland last season.

Dubravka 7 one save to make which he should have been given no chance with. Punched well, used his feet well and that bit of experience was important.

Walker 8 still a superb right back

Ekdal 9 very much the game for him, always been a classy centre half and showed it today

Esteve 8 standard Steve. Probably shouldn’t have come back on.

Hartman 7 got another good un here although maybe not where corners are concerned

Ukgochukwu 7 big into Big Les, needed a player like him for time

Cullen 9 excellent goal, excellent assist

Hannibal 6 his energy is really important, needs to be a bit less sloppy on the ball

Bruun-Larsson 5 awful first half, hardly saw the ball and didn’t go looking for it. Better 2nd half but we’ll need way more from him.

Foster 8 deserved his goal, never a foul. He’s back to making some excellent runs and his use of the ball is largely very good.

Sonne 6 did fine

Laurent 8 put some drive back into a flagging midfield

Think we’ll have some fun with Tchouna, looks a lively fella.

Good to get a win early doors innit.

Sonne 7 (Did well considering I don't think he's PL standard!)
Laurent 7
Loum 7 (Should have scored!)!
Worral 7 (Did what he had to do to see the job through)

Sunderland looked very good on the ball, but after a piece of rubbish defending by us after about 5 minutes when they should have scored, they failed to get anywhere near our goal for the next 95 minutes. Two pretty evenly matched teams, but we got the ball in the het and they never looked like doing. A very pleasing performance, albeit against one of the teams we'd expect to be scrapping at the bottom all season just like ourselves.

Really encouraging display today. I was more interested in how we approached the game off the ball than on it, as we are going to spend a lot of this season without it. A couple more additions and I think we are in a really good place. The biggest plus for me is that all of our summer signings looked like really good additions on this showing, which is a far cry from last time in the prem.

Dubravka 7 - solid debut. His experience will be key
Walker 8 - One mistake aside, he has made our defence a lot more hard to break down already.
Ekdal 8 - He's just always in the right place. I pray he stays injury free this season and shows everyone what a good player he is.
Esteve 8 - Solid as ever
Hartman 7 - What impressed me was he got stronger as the game progressed.
JBL 6 - Doesn't look match fit yet, but he improved a bit in the second half.
Cullen 9 - Pass of the season already
Ugochukwu 8 - like the look of him, hard to brush off, and more importantly keeps the ball.
Hannibal 8 - Ran and ran, extra mark for his energy and pressing.
Anthony 8.5 - Gets better and better, unbelievable stamina.
Foster 8 - Made a lot of decent runs, very unlucky with the goal

Sonne 7 - Suited that role better than JBL
Laurent 7 - Used his physicality well
Tchaouna 8 - Really liked the look of him, won headers, nearly scored, helped with the 2nd goal

I don't think Sunderland are a bad side, but after a slow start we hardly gave them a sniff.

Dubravka 7 - We need a song for him along the lines of 'One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, GET EFFING RID'!
Walker 7 - Quality player and will be all season hopefully.
Ekdal 8** - His best game in a Burnley Shirt? I thought he was composed and his positional awareness makes up for maybe a yard of pace.
Esteve 7 - Forming a partnership with his new mates and good to see him punch the air after making a challenge, it means everything to him.
Hartman 7 - Will quickly become a fan favourite and knows when the play it and when to clear it!
JBL 5 - Poor throughout unfortunately.
Cullen 8 - The new Captain Marvel! Great goal and quality pass to Anthony for the second.
Ugochukwu 7 - A welcome addition to midfield
Hannibal 7 - He is a real pain to play against, good!
Anthony 7 - Was in and out of the game a bit but when it mattered he was there!
Foster 8 - Another who had a good game and his physicality is hard to handle, unlucky with the disallowed goal.

Sonne 6 - Slotted in nicely
Laurent 7 - Brings an energy and positivity into the side, what a steal he is for £500k in the modern era.
