Celtic/Rangers
Watched both Rangers/Celtic games over the last 2 nights in the Champions league, these two clubs would struggle in the Championship the standard is shocking can these two clubs be classed as massive clubs?, the size of their support is the only thing that's massive.

I watched Rangers last night in a Portuguese bar. I agree with you. Dire. They'd struggle in the Championship, alright.

That's not true. Rangers have a massive bellend as a managerVincent'sCap wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 9:46 pmWatched both Rangers/Celtic games over the last 2 nights in the Champions league, these two clubs would struggle in the Championship the standard is shocking can these two clubs be classed as massive clubs?, the size of their support is the only thing that's massive.
Re: Celtic/Rangers
Scottish football is awful in general.
The old firm fans delusion is also massive. They think they are big players in the football world.

Re: Celtic/Rangers
Gotta make their existance important somehow, seeing as domestically there is just no competition and must be as dull as dishwater watching that.
Re: Celtic/Rangers
Both felt like really big clubs in the nineties and probably into the noughties as well. They had some big names in football like Larsson, Laudrup etc.
Then Rangers had massive financial issues and were relegated to the third division and suddenly Celtic no longer had the same competition driving them on to keep improving. They're spending the same sorts of transfer fees on players today as they were doing back in the 90s/ 2000s.

Re: Celtic/Rangers
Celtic were shocking. Passed the ball well until 30 yds from goal and then nothing. Kazhaks defended really well but with all that possession you have to have a pot now and again.
Wouldn’t rule them out though as Kazhaks will have to come out next week and they might find a hole.
Ridiculous they are in the competition. 200 miles from China FGS. Only in because one small portion of an enormous country is West of the Urals.

Re: Celtic/Rangers
The only thing massive in Scottish football is the enthusiasm for the game Every small village has a team and the Highland league has a reserve division at the same level as our level 7 games
I was always a very enthusiastic amateur who played for Bunillidth Thistle our Helmsdale village team .We had fishermen, builders and shepherd's making up our side. The Scots love football and a coach travelled the 200+ miles to Glasgow to watch Rangers home games.Of recent times Inverness Caly and Dingwall based Ross County have joined the top division. The rules very fluid and its akin to watching pub teams kicking lumps off each other

Had to change planes in Almaty going to an Irish international , had a fair few locals come up to me talking about football . Yep you can see the Hinda kush mountain range from the airport .
Re: Celtic/Rangers
The only thing keeping it going is religious bigotry. Take that out and the whole Scottish football system collapses into total irrelevance

Re: Celtic/Rangers
They're getting worse comparatively to English sides. Don't get me wrong both clubs are still capable of pulling a result off against decent opposition but they wouldn't do it consistently over a season. It's always given them a false sense of where they rank in the football pyramid to be honest.

They are big clubs. It's just the ridiculous amount of money generated in the English top tier, and to a lesser extent the Championship that makes the difference. I'm not particular fond of either of The Old Firm. But they are both cracking clubs with illustrious histories.

Yes they have a illustrious history but that is in the past, championship teams at best if they ever attempt to venture into the English league systemgroove wrote: ↑Sun Aug 24, 2025 8:51 pmThey are big clubs. “They had some big names in football like Larsson, Laudrup etc.” “Then Rangers had massive financial issues and were relegated to the third division”… cause and effect. They bet the ranch and rolled snake eyes. Domestic wins could not prepare them for facing the then mighty Spanish and Italian clubs. The sectarian obsession with becoming dominant in Glasgow was so blinkered they destroyed themselves and ruined their league.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 10:55 pmBoth felt like really big clubs in the nineties and probably into the noughties as well. Re: Celtic/Rangers
On the contrary. If they ventured into the English game, and one would imagine they'd be Premier League before long, they'd have the revenue streams. They'd be attractive clubs to play for. They'd be pushing for the top 6, or making it a top 8 before you know it.Vincent'sCap wrote: ↑Sun Aug 24, 2025 8:54 pmYes they have a illustrious history but that is in the past, championship teams at best if they ever attempt to venture into the English league system

Money guarantees you nothing or a top six/eight position in the league, just ask Man-Utdgroove wrote: ↑Sun Aug 24, 2025 9:41 pmOn the contrary. Re: Celtic/Rangers
The old firm games used to be enjoyable to watch, in a large part because of the atmosphere.
The decision to play silly beggars with each other by severely restricting the away allocations, means it's a nothingness fixture now. The quality of the players just adds to the general meh about it.

Re: Celtic/Rangers
Of course they would struggle because they attract lower quality players but if they had the finances and coverage of playing in England they would quickly pick up better quality.
Don't under estimate how big these Clubs are and they would soon be up there with their huge commercial potential.
I was born in Scotland but I would'nt want to see this happen

Re: Celtic/Rangers
I would say in a premier league that had them as members they would be way bigger than the following
Everyone other than utd, liverpool, arsenal.
If they were in the prem they would have to build new stadiums to accomodate the demand.
If we were in scotland we would be the 3rd biggest club behind them

Re: Celtic/Rangers
I wonder if the opposite would happen. Lots of teams probably over-compete in European competition where home advantage is amplified. If they were in the PL week after week, then I could see them really struggling. And getting relegated. Suddenly their perceived dominance then disappears and they really aren't that big anymore, anywheresteve1264b wrote: ↑Tue Aug 26, 2025 11:33 pmI would say in a premier league that had them as members they would be way bigger than the following

Of course the opposite could happen, and their ability to attract top talent could improve, combined with a new income stream, could see them become huge
I'd rather not find out tbh

Re: Celtic/Rangers
A few years ago there was a Northern Europe league touted containing the likes of Rangers, Celtic, Gothenburg, Brondby, Ajax and a few other of the larger teams from this area. It could have been a jump up for all these clubs to have competitive games.
Re: Celtic/Rangers
Their time has passed as a “big” club by modern standards.
They don’t have the revenue and their squads are weak. Celtic are mid championship level, Rangers not even that.
Ifs and buts regarding the TV revenue they would be too late to the party. Every club in the EPL are further down the road than them and to catch up would require a lot

Scotland has the football system it deserves....it's about as competetive as the boat race.
Pitiful to see the lines of bigot-filled coaches departing Kilmarnock/Ayr/Dumfries etc on a saturday morning whilst those towns can barely scrape anything like a crowd together.

If/when rangers lose to Celtic then Russell Martin is going to need security just to walk around.

Re: Celtic/Rangers
their old firm nonsense is meaningless, big crowds, but ALL based on tribal pettiness.
reality is they are big fish in a washing up basin. Beyond that are utterly useless. drag in masses of support in ireland and their english opposites, but again its all tribal. no one wants them anywhere near the english leagues .
