For me, it's the best opportunity for us to stay up that we've had since the early Dyche days - many teams in and around our level have lost their best players (Wolves, Brentford) teams above our level but not quite elite look to have lost a step (Brighton, Villa) and even the top, top teams don't appear to be quite the force that they were 3-4 years ago.

I'm aware they've had replacements, but there's no guarantee that it'll be plug and play for them.

Then factor in the number of clubs playing European competition, rookie managers/poor managerial fits (Brentford, West Ham), then it's starting to look a top opportunity for us.

Taking a measured gamble now makes sense. UTC!

I think the strategy involves knowing these type of players get sold if we go down. There’s a confidence we can make good money back, and so it reduces the risk. Course you can end up with an Amdouni where no one wants to buy, but equally a Koleosho/Odobert/Berge who raise £70m very easily. Saints have sold Dibling and Fernandes to the Prem for a combined £85m despite being the second worst team ever in the Prem!

That said, I’m taking the Mikautadze link with a pinch of salt at the moment. That fee seems a bit too high to be honest.
Yeah I’m in the same boat. I’m just waiting for the article saying it’s a load of rubbish.

Mikautadze and Luis would be borderline insane if we got them both. We'd be under a bit of pressure to stay up after that financial outlay!
Nice pressure though.

Sky now reporting the deal for Florentino Luis is done club to club.

The deal is a loan plus an obligation to buy, with the total fee believed to be worth £21.6m (€25m).

If we sign Luis, where does he fit in if our starting midfield is Big Les and Cullen?
Why can’t all 3 of them play together? Look at Newcastle, for example. Their midfield 3 are considered ‘number 8’ but they all play in the same team.

Also could play a 5-3-2 with Anthony taking the RWB role.

Showing to me importance to Scott of being good defensively and his ability to adapt

The players we have brought in alongside these two new potential names gives him so many options-a back 3 or 4 , two defensive midfielders
His ultimate challenge with so many good footballers is finding his strongest 11.What a problem to have

It’s going to be one busy deadline day.

Benson
Tresor
Delcroix
Worrall
Hladky
Churlinov

All these you could envisage moving on.

Agree, but I think Worrall might stay as cover, and to come on late in a game to retain a lead. Obefemi to add to your list

Green already moved out so Hdlaky will be staying unless we sign another keeper.

There could also be some surprises moving out if we manage to sign the afore mentioned targets.

Just heard the links and am chuckling about queries where he would fit in with Josh ahead of him. I like Josh a lot, but this kid is a real player, could easily be signed by a top 8 club, which in all honesty Josh cannot. He hasn’t a full Portugese cap yet so maybe he isn’t quite at the top level but he is genuine Champion’s League pedigree.

Put it this way, he starts every game. A bit like Makalele. Not overly quick but stops everything and distributes.

Feels to me that Zeki may have put a word in for us. If so, that loan last year could be a blessing.

I’m not even getting started on Mikautadze. I had to do his famous spectacles goal celebration just to check I was reading the report right  . Cannot accept we have a chance.

Sounds like Don Pace has decided following two or three established teams looking weak like West Ham and Wolves, to go “all in”. Well done him, because these players would have resale value and I like the risk / reward.

No idea if there’s any truth in this but I’ve heard from a pretty reliable source that these deals have only been made possible on the back of the increased fan zone revenue taken directly from the cricket club.

Will always be surreal to me that little old Burnley are beating giants like Roma and Marseille to buy players from giants like Benfica.

Sheff Utd, Derby and Stoke interested. It would be a shame to see him go tbh although I suspect his minutes will be limited if we get the lad in from Benfica.

Be a real shame I really like Laurent.. may be limited for mins but think we can still afford to hold him - one injury to anyone and we'd definitely still need him on the bench.

At least we've been able to give him a start and a valuable minutes in a win in the PL, it was a good story.

Guess he'd want to play given his age, I'd keep him personally for the reasons you just mentioned

Romano: Burnley are closing in on Florentino Luis deal €2m loan fee plus €24m obligation to buy bid accepted by Benfica!

There are still details to clarify but Burnley will push to avoid late hijacks.

The actual figure for Ugochukwu wasn’t released but it was said ‘north of £20m’… so could be similar.

Hope we can close this one without a late hijack, as Romano puts it.

I don't think there's a chance Worrall leaves.

We need 3 keepers so think it's also unlikely that we get rid of Hladky

Ironically the only way this deal will be hijacked is because Romano has informed everyone.

*If* we sign a new cb (rumours for the FC Metz guy the other day) then I think Worrall could be given the option to leave.

We’d have defence options of Walker, Ekdal, Esteve (3 current starters), *New*, Humphreys, Tuanzebe. Think that’s more than enough. Hard for them all to even get in a matchday squad. But depends if we bring someone in.

Why clog this thread up with rubbish?
Is it really that difficult to follow the subject?

At the end of last season I’d have agreed with you, but he’s clearly part of the plans and just put in arguably his best performance for us.

I think that puts him ahead of Worrall, though if we can move on Delcroix and loan out Beyer I think there’s room for all of them given Tuanzebe’s injury record (and Ekdal’s for that matter).

I suspect Beyer isn’t particularly attractive to anyone at the moment, still a fair way off being fit enough to play matches judging by what has (or hasn’t) come out of the club.

I’m seriously overwhelmed this morning with all of the hype on X surrounding Burnley’s alleged interest in Luis and Mikhautdze.
These comments are coming from some very credible journalists so I don’t think it’s all hype.
We’re clearly attempting to strengthen the quality of our 1st team squad and need to see what the next 72 hours brings.
However, I can’t recall us being connected before with players of this calibre and I’ve been following the club for over 60 years.
I’ll give the Board their credit they do appear to be making a supreme effort to ensure we’re in a position to be a serious competitor in the PL this time around

And 3 years ago, we were first linked in Kompany's first window. He's been a repeated target for a number of years.

How good is Luis?
We're paying a lot of money for him but he's 26 and never played for Portugal at senior level. Although Portugal do have some excellent options in his position.

That thought had crossed my mind too, although he has an astonishing number of caps at the various Age levels.

Won't show up in the cup on a Tuesday night unless it's against big opposition.

How good is Luis?
We're paying a lot of money for him but he's 26 and never played for Portugal at senior level. Although Portugal do have some excellent options in his position.
He has João Palhinha and Ruben Neves ahead of him at DCM, then in front of them at CM the even better PSG pair Vitinha and João Neves. Before we even get to Bruno etc further forward.

A Burnley move could pave the way for a debut because this is the toughest league of all, Ruben in particular is in his 30s now and in Saudi.

Interesting. Luis we seem to have targeted earlier in the window and it's finally come to light. I wonder if there were any other rumours earlier in the window we have still been working on.

It’s going to be one busy deadline day.

Benson
Tresor
Delcroix
Worrall
Hladky
Churlinov

All these you could envisage moving on.
The good news from that list is we will be holding on to Obafemi

Sky now reporting the deal for Florentino Luis is done club to club.

The deal is a loan plus an obligation to buy, with the total fee believed to be worth £21.6m (€25m).

The caveat being the bottom line that there has been no agreement, as yet, with the player

And 3 years ago, we were first linked in Kompany's first window. He's been a repeated target for a number of years.
3 years ago for €4m…….

I think Laurent is needed. We aren't blessed with lots of options in the centre of midfield and could be struggling for cover if we get any injuries or suspensions - even if we do sign Florentino Luis.
