Living in Japan, Heinz Baked Beans have attained a Godlike status in my heart. My 2-year old son has also learned the ditty `Beans, beans...good for your heart. The more you eat, the more you fart.` Good times!!! Thank you Heinz

Don't want to come across as confrontational BUT Branston beans are the nicer tasting beans IMHO.

Re: I like baked beans
Branston have taken over as my favourite since Heinz started thinning the sauce.
Similar to Heinz soup range, everything bar the classic Tomato has gone downhill.
Branston has to be helped out of the tin such is the quality.

Own brand beans are fine if you add premium quality ketchup whilst you warm them, even brown sauce or mustard works a treat to.Tuddybfc wrote:Can there be any alternative to Heinz? Personally can't stomach supermarkets own, interested to here everyone's thoughts?

Re: I like baked beans
Beans are beans. Buy the cheapest and add ketchup. I have been a pauper.
Re: I like baked beans
Heinz and co have reduced sugar and salt hence the need to season. Tesco or Branston both fine.
I got a good recipe a few years ago which is open tin of beans start cooking in salted butter then turn heat up and add a small glass of a sour mash whiskey. Cook the alcohol out and serve. Delicious smokey taste to the beans. Yum.

Re: I like baked beans
Great shame that Heinz have f&ck&d up their brand of beans by wrecking the sauce that made them different. Shoot whoever did that....57 times.
Is it true that you have to be over farty four to know what a real baked bean tasted like?

Re: I like baked beans
As has already been pointed out Branston's beans are by far the best now with Heinz having a watery sauce more akin to supermarket "own brand" efforts. Mind you I still prefer Heinz's unique version of the sausage, as in those strange aerated delicacies mixed in with their beans in their tins of beans with sausages.

Branston every time, however Heinz do come with a ring pull, Branston do not.
Top tip: add a knob of butter to your (Branston) beans. It takes them to the next level.

How many people mod their beans?
I usually fry a small onion up with cumin, coriander and chilli powder, add the beans then slap them on nice thick sliced white toast!

Put them in the frying pan after the bacon is done.
I know, not very healthy (more like not very fashionable) to be frying bacon but it's bacon, yes, bacon!

I remember Tesco Value beans at 3p a tin during the baked beans price war in the mid 90s. Great for students like myself back then!

They will be worth it.Branstons are, without doubt, top baked bean now.
Re: I like baked beans
Wow how to resurrect a two year old thread. You won't be disappointed, Branston are the SD of the bean world. Tastier than the tastiest beans in Tasteville

Re: I like baked beans
Its easy to get Heinz in France, a little pricey so I very rarely get them. The local efforts are absolutely abysmal though, big fat beans that are an arse to cook accompanied by watery tomato sauce. Carrefour Haricots blancs Witte bonen, 530g, 1 euro 20 something, absolute last resort for a beans on toast craving. I can just about do them with a bit of Worcester Sauce mixed in... but blinking heck they're crap. They also make me fart like a Greek god.

Re: I like baked beans
I'm a big fan of Heinz Baked beans - never tried the Branston versions but will now give them a go. My preferred method of preparation is to heat in the pan until the sauce thickens - my missus likes to microwave them.......
. I sprinkle chilli powder into mine as I'm stirring. Had them for tea last night on 2 crust ends..... it doesn't get any better.

Re: I like baked beans
My mate is the quality control manager for Baked Beans at Heinz in Wigan. I didn’t know that the the chimneys with the 57 on are actually the ovens where the beans are cooked.
Apparently they put all the ingredients in the tin on a conveyer then it takes an hour for each tin to go up and down the chimney at a specific temperature before being labelled. If the temperature is wrong he’s been known to dump 50 tons of the stuff!
Not the most exciting conversation I’ve had with him, the discussion about the plump breasted Albanian prostitute riding a unicycle down a cobbled street was far better.

Very good beans. I've just had a tin full on toast with a poached egg for me dinner
Re: I like baked beans
Tesco's beans are very good, but as with most beans you have to season them due to the health fascists taking salt and sugar out of them. A guy I work with warms butter in a frying pan, adds the beans then a couple of cap fulls of whisky, turn the heat up burn of the alcohol and the beans really do taste amazing.

Re: I like baked beans
Branstons, too much liquid in Heinz!
Re: I like baked beans
I was a devoted Heinz Beans man. Tins filled to the brim and good sauce. Now they are filled with a loose juice, which does not bind and the top 3/4 inch is just the juice.
I tried Branston at 3 for a pound. Filled to the brim with beans and a proper binding sauce. Superb.
