Agree with the little to no presence outside the edge of the box, but think Walker and Q are top - most of our best attacking movements involve them to some degree.
I would like to see the stats on that! Was it Sunderland where Cullen fed Anthony directly for the second goal? That's the kind of direct pattern we're not seeing very much of. I feel like we'd be more dangerous exploiting our quality in CM and pushing Anthony/a RM further up the pitch. I'm not so sure how many chances have come from the ball moving out to Hartman/Walker, but I don't know it's untrue tbf just my instinct.

Florentino Luis has swapped Lisbon and the Champions League for this. He could be playing in O Clássico later today but instead he's chasing shadows in the Birmingham drizzle. Looks miles better than anything else we have. The pull of the Premier League. No way should he be at Burnley.

Not much to lose by bringing Broja on. I'd also bring Big Les on.

I said at the end August that I thought we needed a centre half regardless of the system we were aiming to play, and a really dynamic hard working right sided player if we wanted to play this 541 system. Nothing I've seen since has changed my mind and today is a mess. Laurent's understandly struggling as a centre back because he's a natural midfielder- it worked OK as a wild card against Liverpool but it hasn't worked since and it's been heavily exposed today.

We need to revert to something more like a back 4. We're being pulled apart all over the place here and we're not getting enough players forward to capitalise on some decent field position.

What we are seeing is exactly what Fulham and Bournemouth fans warned us of. Good Championship manager, devoid of attacking solutions in the Premier ultimately leading to relegation. It should come as no surprise....

The player who might make a difference to our team is sat on the Villa bench. Ross Barkley would give our attacking play the impetus it sadly lacks.
18 months to go on his deal and he hasn't got on the pitch so far this season for Villa.

Can somebody please explain to me why their only man up front hasn’t got a CB within 2yds of him. Because I can’t work it out! Before the ball went to the assist Steve, QH & Malen were all stood on the halfway line. If our two had stepped forward he was offside. SP will have learned from it.
IMG_5153.jpeg
It was a mess all round. Walker (as seems to be a regular occurrence) was miles out of position which stretches the back 3. Hartman is looking along the line, watches Esteve drop and track the runner on the opposite side but simply stays on the halfway line and watches Malen go. Estève does all the hard work and then doesn't get the block in. Not sure the keeper covers himself in glory either.

We're an ok side ...one that would romp away with the championship, but sadly not up to the standard for surviving in this league. It was all dependent on some astute recruitment and it seems weve failed that challenge....especially up front.

Those slagging Parker off would do well to remember last season. He's earned his trust. We've had as tough a start as possible. Let's see how we get on after today.

The word fickle comes to mind.

Exactly my thoughts as I watched the first half. A real mess today. I’m surprised at this from SP.

Great save. Second half starting the same way, we're competitive, but they have the quality and numbers forward to create a clear cut chance

Why do we keep stepping off their forwards when they attack our final third? We are creating our own problems by not engaging them.

Last season he was a manager in the Championship which he is quite good at. This season he is a manager in the Premier League, his track record at this level is terrible. We have beaten a side promoted through the play offs and salvaged a draw against a Forest side struggling under a new coach. Villa have had a poor start to the season but we are barely laying a glove on them. As I questioned when the line ups were announced, a back 5 with 2 defensive midfielders is inviting pressure and as soon as we concede we have few options to get us back into the game. Love to be proved wrong...

... 2 brain farts away from being on 6 points, scored twice at Old Trafford as well.

Being critical is fine, but being way ott is a bit daft, let's have some context.

JBL is the kind of player I'd prefer coming on if we were 1-0 up. But he could find a delivery from somewhere. I'll keep saying it, Tresor would be the perfect sub here.

One day someone will be able to explain to me why Trésor can play in cup games but isn't on the bench for a game which might be close with twenty minutes left.
He's one of the best footballers in the squad, and always looks a threat when he comes on.
If we don't have the proper personnel (e.g. playing a MF at CB) the five at the back makes us less solid defensively, and also means we aren't as likely to create chances. It's the worst of both worlds, especially if we concede.
Add in the fact that Foster/Broja don't look like they've got many goals in them and it's probably (as expected) going to be a very tough season.
Anyway, we're still in it UTC!

We are playing a more attacking game by employing a high press, which meant we played more in their half than usual. As a result our whole team moved higher up the pitch than we have recently. It means our midfield can be bypassed a little easier, and our back line was caught too wide for their goal.
A problem it does give is that if we are back in position we seem content to let them have the ball to give extra seconds for our defensive midfielder(s) to get back to increase our defender numbers.
If we can improve our transitioning play, in and out of possession we can still get something out of this game.
Broja will be interesting.

So the gameplan is to invite pressure, Hoy it up the pitch, lose it, run around for 5 mins... Let em score

Great
