Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Dubravka - 8* - outstanding again
Walker - 6
Tuanzebe - 3 - Christ, is this lad really a professional footballer? Looks like he’s never played the game. Awful - truly awful. Like watching a Peter Zelem / Joe Gallagher clone
Esteve - 5 - not helped by the clown alongside him to be fair
Laurent - 6
Hartman - 6
Florentino - 8 - head and shoulders above the rest
Cullen - 7
Anthony - 6
Tchouna - 4
Foster - 4 - can’t fault the effort but talent lacking
Broja - 3 - there’s rusty, and then there’s this… we would be better with Barnes on the bench!
JBL - 3 - has he ever beaten a man?
Surely Humphreys hasn’t fallen down the pecking order so much that he doesn’t start today? All pace in the attacking half went when we brought JBL, Broja and Flemming on - baffling. Surely Edwards to at least offer something - anything - was the call?
2 huge games coming up. Sounds daft but4 points minimum is a must. I’m his biggest critic but even I think Tresor on the bench must be worth a punt

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Dubravka 8 - kept us in the game
Walker 6 - energetic but wasted one great opportunity on their goal-line to control the ball and pick out a pass
Esteve 5 - a couple of good moments but was exposed running down the outside of him several times, including both goals
Tuanzebe 5 - looked rusty but with good awareness, unsure why Ekdal is absent
Laurent 4 - he does not know what to do in that role and should never start
Hartman 6 - our most dangerous defender but didn’t have his best game and at times left Esteve exposed
Cullen 6 - did OK but was outnumbered
Florentino 8 MOM - my new favourite player, was everywhere and life went into slow motion when he got the ball, a sign of class
Anthony 4 - did very little today and had a poor first touch on a couple of big occasions, rare for him
Tchaouna 4 - young and raw, should have been Edwards starting against Konsa and Digne who can handle brute strength
Foster 5 - looked rattled and I was worried he would get 2 yellows, not his best game, that air kick was a real chance that needed taking
Broja 4 - was well marshalled
Brunn Larsen 4 - has some ability but it baffles me why we rely on him so much
Ugochukwu 7 - excellent goal and has presence in midfield, madness not to play him, and if it goes on much longer, fatal
A very frustrating watch where despite the effort it seemed we picked the wrong side from the start. It should have been 4-3-3 as a kind of Christmas Tree with Edwards starting and Lesley too, at the expense of Loum and JL. Lesley is too good not to start, and Laurent is too bad (in defence particularly) to start. What I like about Edwards is he gets us moving up the pitch and defenders are scared to death of tackling him. We lacked that today. We have to at least try, despite lightweight accusations from some of us. Remember last season teams doubled up on him throughout.
I have deep concerns about Parker’s ability in this league, it is the league the managerial creme de la creme want to be in, Emery outsmarted him. The hope is that I would say that about other managers too, Farke being one. Teams of our size who thrive tend to have a top class manager like Glasner or Frank. At this moment Scott has my full support but constructive criticism - he has to show he is willing to “have a go” with attacking changes, while being solid in shape, the latter being something I know he will not change, not should he.

Thought we did fairly well first half and clearly pressed high and tried forcing an error. Lots talk about the ‘back 5’ being negative but it’s not like we just sit back. Hartman and Walker were pressing on the front line. The first goal comes from a) that pressing which they worm out of b) a couple of players poorly positioned c) Esteve bizarrely not sliding to block. Foster misses our big chance and they take theirs.
Second half then went a bit too passive for my liking, our options on the bench don’t look great right now. Once again left feeling Koleosho would offer something more than a couple of these do. At least he offers a genuine threat with pace and directness.
Couple of issues that need solving - if Parker like this 5 then we should have signed a central centre back, Tuanzebe is a right sided central back, we probably missed Ekdal today. He’s the only one really suited to this role.
Laurent hybrid RCB/CM role might need to end. It worked when deep all game v Liverpool, but it’s not organised enough to take on Villa away, when pressing high particularly. Connected to this is Ugochukwu needing to be in the first 11, in midfield. If Parker wants to tuck a winger at times into the back 5 with Walke moving inside then that’s how it should work, like we did at times v Sunderland.

AbraDubravka - 8 - mom (were his angles a bit off for the first? Maybe. But pulled a string of killer saves to keep us in it
Walker 7 - consistently one of our better performers
Laurent 6 - solid enough
Tuanebe 5 - I think he was lucky not to concede the pen (it would have been soft but he clearly tugs the shirt)
Esteve 6 - looks a bit fragile at the moment
Hartman 7 - does pretty well getting forward
Cullen 7 - he's grafting hard every game - good effort i 1st half
Florentino 6 - looks brilliant in patches
Anthony 6 - quieter game but not much support and unlucky with the knock
Tchouma 5 - a few brief sparks
Foster 4 - woeful
Broja 4 - looks unfit to me
JBL 4 - remind me why we brought him back?
Ugochukwu 7 - looked to get involved and took the goal well
Overall very disappointing. We did ok but didn't really look like scoring and just like each season, just a Foster looks like turning a corner he comes back down the street. .Once they went in front they pretty much controlled the game so the final 14 minute flirty was a bit of s bonus and we might have nicked an undeserved pint had we not had the game killing 'injury' another end

Hope Parker doesn’t get a dose of the Amorims and not change a system that clearly isn’t working. We have a massive gaping black hole in the centre of the pitch because SP is setting us up so defensively but we still haven’t the quality to stop the opposition. At least with an extra body in midfield we could become a bit less porous and maybe, just maybe, a bit more bite in the forward areas. We are going to fall back out of this league with a whimper if we carry on the way we’re going unfortunately.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
From a very busy Goodies Bar on tv
Dubravka 8 mom it's a worrying sign when your goalkeeper is regularly man of the match
Walker 6 tough game for him today, he looked very frustrated at having nobody to pass to in front of him
Laurent 3 we are playing with ten men with him in the team...Parker's fault for playing him.
Tuanzebe 4 looks a poor signing
Esteve 6 missing a regular cb partner
Hartman 7 tried to get us going forward
Luis 8 our best outfield player by a country mile
Cullen 7 played his heart out but nothing up front to help him
Tchaouno 4 needs a rest
Foster 4 I said before the seaon started we needed two PL adequate strikers because Foster wouldnt be good enough. We didnt sign them
Anthony 4 frustrating gives the ball far too often, he thinks he can run through players rather than go past them . Parker says he is a PL player, I disagree
Jbl 4 why did we bring him back
Flemming 5 tried to play football
Hugo 7 how the hell he didnt start, only Parker knows
Parker 4 starting to worry me, a very poor starting eleven, with square pegs in round holes. Plus a powder puff front three which simply isnt strong enough agsinst PL defenders. If we have the same starting eleven against Leeds at home, then it shows Parker is too defensively minded and too stubborn.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Dubravka 8 excellent signing, wonderful saves another great performance
Walker 7 Good performance, looks a threat going forward, needs to push in more if Laurent is covering him
Laurent 5 I’ll keep banging this drum, he’s doing ok in the job he’s been given, but he’s not comfortable there and it’s restricting him and the team.
Tuanzebe 6 Steady debut.
Esteve 5 Some excellent Steeeevveeee bits, but at fault for both goals, should have slid in to block the first and wasnt tight enough on Malen.
Hartmann 6 Steady and good assist for the goal.
Cullen 7 put a shift in and had our best chance other than the goal.
Tchouna 5 struggling, looked better coming off the bench
Florentino 7 looks a player does this lad.
Anthony 5 not his day today.
Foster 5 we love a trier at Burnley, what we need is a goalscorer, caught offside too many times.
Broja 4 No comment, got enough pelters from our fans, without me adding to it.
Brunn Larsen 4 ditto the above
Ugochukwu 7 Good goal, pleased for him.
Flemming 5
Another difficult day, the main take away is we looked so poor going forward. We need to change this either go 442 and go a bit more direct or play 5 in midfield, not at the back.
Pleasing we scored from a set piece, Dubravka great again, Luis looks good and a good goal from Ugochukwu.
We have to somehow start nicking points here and there from teams like Villa, otherwise it puts under more pressure on games we have a chance of winning.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Another respectable result in isolation, but the big picture trend is towards performances which are too timid and become missed opportunities against good teams but who have vulnerabilities - particularly United, Forest and now today Villa - and the team doesn't feel like it's currently quite the sum of its parts.
Dubravka- 8 - some very good saves.
Walker - 6 - he's more comfortable narrower, with more of the game close to him.
Hartman - 6 - a couple of nice moments but a little lightweight on occasions and caught upfield a little too often.
Laurent - 4 - it's not his fault because he's playing out of position, but all over the place at times and ruthlessly exposed.
Tuanzebe - 6 - looked a little rusty but he'll be better for it in the long run.
Esteve - 6 - might have done more to interfere with the opening goal but he did OK.
Cullen - 6 - outmuscled on occasions but ratted OK. He just needs more around him.
Fiorentino - 7 - kept going impressively and by some distance our best outfield player.
Tchaouna- 5 - not any sort of feature on proceedings and looks better as an impact sub or used higher up the pitch right now.
Anthony - 5 - a bit powderpuff today
Foster- 5 - tried his best but not really given an opportunity. Didn't follow the logic of him dropping to the right, rather than left, when Broja came on.
Broja - 5 - unable to really influence proceedings and it's clear there's a project to rebuild his confidence.
Brunn Larsen - 5 - a couple of nice moments but peripheral.
Ugochukwu- 6 - took his goal well enough and added some intensity to our midfield.
Whilst in one sense, Parker may feel that by going into the last few minutes we've done what he hoped in giving ourselves a chance to nick a point, that masks the fact that we made this game disappointingly straightforward for Villa.
I understand the logic of the back 5 set up but it's increasingly clear we don't have the players to make a success of it unless we going to camp incredibly deep as we did against Liverpool, and it's also increasingly clear that the current set up with Laurent in the back three is ripe for exploitation by teams who draw us out and move the ball with pace, which unfortunately is the way a large portion of the Premier League, including Villa, want to play. For large chunks of the game, we showcased the limitations of the 3421/541 formation - centre backs getting drawn into midfield, a midfield 2 overrun and wide players who weren't sure whether to support Foster in a front 3 or pull back to make a midfield 4. Sometimes we pressed, but not with the intensity and commitment needed to win the ball high with any intensity, sometimes we sat deeper but never wkty rhe discipline we showed against Liverpool. When we did get field position, particularly in the first half, we worked the ball nicely but once again failed to get enough men in the box to make a cross worthwhile, and we lack the guile to play through teams. It was all a bit in-between.
Ultimately I'm not sure you can step up successfully to this level with square pegs in round holes. We had too many today - Laurent isn't a centre back, Tuanzebe looked unsure as the central man in a back 3, Foster ended up on the right wing with JBL on the left then swapping them would seem more sensible, and Walker looks better suited to a role tucking in and using his pace to recover situations defensively than to doing shuttle runs up and down the line as an outside right at this stage in his career. Tchaouna also looks unsure whether his role is to tuck in to support the midfield and front man, or to work the touchline, and ended up doing neither as a result.
So as we go into the international break there is plenty for Parker to ponder. As we go into a run of games from which we really need points, I hope Parker is mullinhg whether the current system best suits the talent at his disposal. We've had a tough run overall, but arguably we've played all of United, Liverpool, Forest and Villa at a goid time for different reasons, and we've not really capitalised in the way others like Sunderland have. If we want to win the points to keep us in the hunt for survival this team needs to find an identity quick. Being diligent, semi resilient and honest is great but we've got more in our locker and we're going to need to find it and exploit it to the maximum.

Dubravka 9 - Class saves
Walker 6
Laurent 5 - I mean, he's just not a Premier League footballer.
Tuanzebe 5
Esteve 4 - Maybe being the best player in the Championship is like winning the special Olympics.
Hartman 6
Tchaouna 3 - I was aware he started, and then saw him get subbed off. Genuinely no idea how he occupied himself inbetween.
Cullen 7 - Busy, tidy, etc
Florentino 7 - This will be his only season with us.
Anthony 5
Foster 5 - He was onside when we kicked off, and restarted. They were the only times.
Bruun Larsen 4
Broja 3 - It's like time itself has slowed down when he starts 'running'. Literally made me 'lol'.
Ugochukwu 7 - Big Les has to start.
Another otherwise pleasant day out ruined by the football. Absolutely mind numbing, that. I do really like Villa Park though, and the civilised home fans in the pub we found.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Dubravka 8 This lad is a class act. He reminds me of Tom Heaton.
Walker 6 Poor by his standards
Laurent 5 An experiment that worked in one game and hasn’t since. Not fair on him.
Tuanzebe 5 Thrown in in a difficult game.
Esteve 5 He’s struggling at this level so far, against elite opposition. A bit like he did last time…
Hartman 6 A great left foot proved our main attacking outlet but defensively, one good tackle aside, he wasn’t great.
Cullen 5 Overrun. I love Josh, but he’s too small to play in a midfield 2. Great in a side that is regularly on top but we’re not that and the stupid tactics mean we are constantly outnumbered in midfield. Sideways and backwards.
Florentino 6 He’s a class above the rest of our team but today was also difficult for him, due to the tactics.
Anthony 4 Awful today. Weak in mind and will.
Tchauna 4 Non-existent. Like playing with 10 men.
Foster 4 Hard on him as he’s all alone, but we have to accept that he’s just not up to it as lone striker, if at all. The problem is:
Broja 3 Not interested in playing. Zero desire. Fit or not, he’s absolutely useless.
JBL 3 Not interested in playing.
Despite that:
Les 7 Goal. Presence. Athletic ability. A crime that he didn’t start.
Parker 4 He’s got it wrong for several matches, now. We are constantly outnumbered in midfield and offer no threat. Clearly a midfield 3 is priority and we have the players. We looked a poor side today and what was worse is that the players looked confused.

From TV
Dubravka 9 - Kept it respectable
Walker 5 - Poor after recent games
Tuanzebe 5 - Not the answer
Esteve 5 - Another poor game
Hartman 5 - Look at him for 1st goal. Did OK going forward.
Laurent 4 - Not his fault, but playing him in this role has to stop.
Cullen 6 - Usual, but overrun.
Tino 7 - Needs help
Anthony 5 - Nothing today
Tchaouna 4 - Never in the game
Foster 4 - Isolated but never looked at it
Broja 3 - At least look like you're interested
JBL 3 - A shadow of the player who was here previously
Les 6 - Got to start moving forward
A bad day that. They weren't great, but we created sod all and looked vulnerable with balls straight through the middle.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Dubravka 8 - keeps us in games
Walker 5 - a few lapses today
Laurent 5 - nothing against him but would take him out of the side now
Tuanzabe 5 - reserving judgement
Esteve 4 - no way should Malen have been able to score that first
Hartman 5
Tchaouna 4 - missing today
Cullen 4 - people won't like this but he isn't a Prem player. Busy but not enough quality when it matters.
Florentino 7 - looking a great signing. Need him and Les together from the start.
Anthony 4 - off day today
Foster 3 - we have a big problem up front, but we all knew that already.
Broja 3 - he may come good in time but he's had a shocking start
JBL 4 - I welcomed his return but he is not looking like the same player we had
Les - 7 - start him
This was the first game this season where we have properly looked like relegation fodder. At no point did we look like scoring and Villa were absolutely coasting until they gave us that lifeline. Really poor performance that sadly we are extremely accustomed to seeing from Burnley at this level - we just do not or can not lay a glove on half the teams in this league. It's not necessarily our fault but God it is disillusioning. Another slog lies ahead.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
People can talk systems all they want, but we have nothing up front. It’s hard to see how Broja is going to be the answer when Cullen and Walker are bollocking him for not even showing for the ball.
SP needs to mix it up after the break. At least with Flemming and Hannibal, for example, there’s some fight. Les has to start.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Firstly before I start criticising I would say I think we played quite well. The midfield looks competitive and no one looks out of place in the PL. It feels much better than the last time we were in the PL. We aren't terrible not just quite good enough so far.
Saying that these are my criticisms.
Wrong formation: I think for the second week running we should have played 4-5-1 with Ugowukchu in for Laurent and go back to a more orthodox back four. The reasons for it are fairly obvious.
Playing too high up the pitch: if you are going to play a back 5 then the bus needs parking we pressed quite high in parts and in it became our undoing as it did against Spurs and Utd albeit I accept we didn't play the back 5 hybrid type formation in those games.
Lack of concentration: The first goal game from a simple through ball from half way through their half. There was only one of our players in our half when (I think it was Rogers) passed to Kamara. Hartman was marking Malin but just let him go for some reason. You can't give goals away like that in the PL. The second goal came from the whole midfield line pushing too high (see above) leaving Morgan Rogers on his own in the middle of our half and another simple through ball ended up in the back of the net. Looking at the replays, Laurent is screaming at Tuanzuebe who is half asleep and I'm not sure where Florentino is...!
I'm not going to criticise Foster he works ever so hard and plays quite well but no one on here needs me to point out that he doesn't look like scoring.
Final point lack of quality of the bench. Again, it doesn't need me to say much about it - it is what it is.

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Dubravka 8-kept us in game with some greatsaves
Walker 7-some very good intelligent play at times, and a good performance, but was starting to make silly mistakes at the end
Esteve 6-think he is still recovering from the City game. I think the "old" Esteve would have block Villa's first goal
Tuanzebe 6-kept Watkins quiet. Not formed an opinion yet but deserves a second chance/game
Hartman 7-played well and got forward several times but little support.Takes a good corner
Cullen 8-never stopped pressing.Wish a few more would play with his courage and energy
Luis 8-a very good all round defensive display. His distribution today was very good
Tchaouma 5-could not get into game
Foster 6-runs a lot but usually runs into a dead ally. He broke clear several times today but nothing came of it
Anthony 6-a quiet game today and was obviously injured but stayed o pitch around 10 mins too long
Lauren 6-cant work out the merit of having him drop into the back 5. Sadly he is keeping Ugochukwu out the team, who makes a greater contribution
Broja 5-very little pressing and running. He is doing very little to win me over
Flemming 6-unlike Broja he looked like he wanted to get into the game
Ugochukwu 7-should have started. Far too good to leave out and good goal

Re: Aston Villa v Burnley - Player Ratings
Anthony was fouled on several occasions to slow him down particularly by Diegne and was clearly struggling should have been hooked far earlier Flemming needs to start v Leeds as does Les and Edwards.A back 5 needs binning and Bash H in for Laurent.

The worst performance of the season imo. I posted on the match thread when the team sheet came out I wasn't feeling it. A back 5 consisting of a midfielder and a match rusty player was never going to end well. I was a time to change the system and not the personnel. Get your better players on the pitch at the start, beef up your midfield and try to protect the back 4 because yesterday was nowhere near good enough!
