Re: Penalty run ups
That’s a proper run up. If it was up to me I’d not allow the stop start run ups or indeed a run up starting outside the area. The odds are already well in the attackers favour and basically allowing them to do what they want whilst a keeper has to stay touching the line makes it a tad unfair imo.

Taffy was just a proper footballer. he had pace, grace, skill and was just an all in good man, oh, and a bloody good run up for a penalty.

Re: Penalty run ups
One of my first football international memories and still the kits I think of when someone first mentions England and Wales. As a six-seven year old it was confusing watching Taffy and Flynn playing for some foreign country (I knew Wales was part of the British empire, but not that it was an hour West by road).
If they ever brought back that Wales kit it would still be enough for me to cheer them on.

Not as good as the 4th minute into injury time in the pouring rain against Torquay for a point late into the Orient season!

Re: Penalty run ups
Only a few years ago there was a rule that the penalty taker had to take a continuous approach to the ball.
Obviously, that is no longer the case but the advantage should essentially lie with the penalty taker.

Players these days are technically better hence the change in style

Re: Penalty run ups
It needs to be changed to a one step like in 5 a side.
If not, they need to clamp down on the ******* about up and down jogging and just have it a straight run... but then how would Ronaldo score after he's thrown himself down in the box?

Was Taffy left or right footed? I thought he used to take penalties with his left. I could very easily be wrong on this.

Re: Penalty run ups
I blame keepers for diving early, and making it easy for the penalty taker.
I'd prefer they follow the ball, if they don't commit then the penalty taker is practically shooting from a standing start and will struggle to get the power into the shot.
If they put the ball into the corner of the net, a keeper isn't going to save it anyway, so why not take a chance that he isn't going to hit the corner, and he isn't going to be able to hit it hard.

I recall Bobby Charlton remarking he was impressed how two-footed James was.hoskinsgoalatswansea wrote: ↑Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:05 amWas Taffy left or right footed? I thought he used to take penalties with his left. I could very easily be wrong on this.
He also said he was surprised how few footballers were.

2 things I noticed there
No goalie gloves
And
The celebration doesn't take half an hour. Just a well done lads, let's get on with it

Re: Penalty run ups
Very few keepers wore gloves. A couple of years earlier Phil Parkes was invited onto the Big Match because he had started using gloves other than the standard loose cotton ones that were seen occasionally. He’s been sent them from America and wore them because the material was “kind of sticky”. It was the eighties before goalkeeping gloves started to become a regular thing.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Fri Oct 10, 2025 8:37 pm2 things I noticed there

Alan Shearer’s goal celebration was often remarked upon because he put his arm up and ran… before the Premier League started bringing in rakes of foreign stars it had been pretty normal to punch the air and jog back to the half way line, with a few handshakes.

Re: Penalty run ups
The best was Graham Alexander.
Took a few deep breaths and then approached gun barrel straight towards the ball.
Didn't bother about the keeper. Hit the ball at a certain point with his instep for direction.
Rarely missed.

Did Shilton ever save a penalty?

Re: Penalty run ups
Taffy was right footed when it came to penalty kicks and similarly with corners and free kicks.hoskinsgoalatswansea wrote: ↑Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:05 amWas Taffy left or right footed? I thought he used to take penalties with his left. I could very easily be wrong on this.
When the ball was in open play he was able to use both feet as he dribbled / ran with the ball and many of his most devastating runs were on the left wing and he took the ball past the full back and centred from near the bye line with his left foot. He scored from outside the area with powerful drives with mainly his right foot but scored a good number with his left.
Amazing footballer and the best I saw playing for Clarets.

Re: Penalty run ups
Shilton was one of those keepers who usually waited until the kick was taken before committing which way to dive, which meant he would go the right way but not be able to save it unless the kick was weak or poorly placed. See the shootout in the 1990 WC semi final, went the right way every time but never really got close to saving any.

Re: Penalty run ups
He was always a percentage keeper to me, great at positioning himself in open play, but never the greatest shot-stopper.Grimsdale wrote: ↑Sat Oct 11, 2025 7:10 amShilton was one of those keepers who usually waited until the kick was taken before committing which way to dive, which meant he would go the right way but not be able to save it unless the kick was weak or poorly placed. Re: Penalty run ups
Well it's a penalty. It is not supposed to be fair. There was an infringement which affords an almost certain goal, as a result. That's why saves are unexpected.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Thu Oct 09, 2025 6:39 pmThat’s a proper run up. Re: Penalty run ups
I’d say he was every bit as good with either foot but his right was his stronger (according to him).hoskinsgoalatswansea wrote: ↑Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:05 amWas Taffy left or right footed? I thought he used to take penalties with his left. I could very easily be wrong on this.

Like you say, a rare event.
