Noticably 'warmer' this morning compared to the last few days. 14c expected this afternoon vs 4.

12th October and the sun is shining through the patio doors and it's 21.9c.
Weather forecast to be nice and sunny for the rest of the year.

Could we have it where we don't feel the need to turn the heating on at all for the rest of 2025?

Sat in the garden. Haven't even had the fire on yet.

Not yet...

If I feel like the house needs it to prevent any damp/condensation, then I'll turn it on, till then, just wear an extra layer.

Caravan gas heater on 1 in Abersoch I’m ashamed to say. Lovely and sunny though. God bless the Indians

Temperature dropped significantly in the house today but no surprise with the mist and fog. Don’t think it will be long before my heating goes on.

Not sure what this costs in terms of electricity, but my TV as well as showcasing disabolical programmes, also acts as a radiator.

As I work from home I think with that and the laptop it warms the room up. Currently 22.3c but was 17c this morning. Hardly the Sahara but seems to make a difference.

I've boosted my heating for an hour on a couple of cooler mornings, but other than that the thermostat stays at 17 until it starts getting much colder outside... then I might knock it up to 18 if I'm feeling generous! Looking back, my usage jumps considerably between Nov-Feb, and that's with the thermostat set low. I can't even imagine what my bills would be if I tried to heat the house to 20 degrees. I think I'd need a second mortgage!

Heating? I've still got my fan on and the window open.

Only had the AC off two weeks ago!

Not sure how much it helped but a few weeks ago we put some tape around the patio doors but it was more for sound than room temperature. When there was a gale, you could hear it leaking through.

Something wrong there. Even outside it's around 15c. 21.2c currently room temperature here, with TV and computer on.

The World Health Organisation suggests a minimum recommended indoor temperature for a home in winter is 18°C in an occupied room during the day. Anything below this becomes a general health risk, and can cause serious mold/damp problems.

For anyone struggling to heat their whole home with the cost of energy, you can try just heating the room which you occupy most (e.g. your living room or a bedroom). This is cheaper than trying to heat the whole place. Electric oil filled radiators are really good for this as they retain a lot of heat for an hour or two after being switched off.

More details as below;

For general home use
  • 18°C (65°F): Recommended for most occupied rooms to protect health.

Below 18°C: Can negatively affect health, especially for vulnerable groups.

19–21°C: Recommended daytime temperature for occupied rooms.

Minimum temperature to avoid damp and mould: Keep the home at or above 18°C to reduce risk.

The NHS suggests that areas of your home used most, such as the living room and bedroom, should be at least 18°C.
For different rooms
  • Living room: 19–22°C (daytime)

    Bedroom: 16–20°C (cooler aids sleep)

Other rooms (kitchen, hallway, etc.): 16–18°C
Other considerations
  • Workplaces: Minimum often 13°C for most work; 16°C for sedentary work.

Health risks: Below 18°C can increase blood pressure and risk of clots, heart attacks, and strokes.

Mould and damp: Temperatures below 18°C increase the risk of damp and mould.

I don't want to pry Tony, but I do worry about anyone living in low temperatures for significant periods of time.

Is your home insulated and do you own it? If not insulated there are a number of schemes, especially for certain groups, that can help with the cost of installing insulation. I'm happy to point you in the direction of these if you would like. If your home is rented, then it gets a little more complicated but that doesn't mean there aren't still options open to you to pursue.

Can I reiterate what ClaretOfMancunia has said CT. It did concern me last year when you mentioned the low temperature in your house. If you don’t mind me asking what’s your thermostat set at and assuming you might have it set at 18 degrees or above does it just never reach it, in which case you must be losing the heat somewhere. If that’s the case you need to get a qualified heating engineer to have a look.

Wow CT, I agree with ‘beddie’ and ‘ClaretofMancunia’ 13 degrees indoor temp is crazy cold. I’m guessing it was colder indoors that outside, you really need to look into where the heat is going. I realise our winters are way colder than yours but here in Ontario if the heating is controlled by a landlord the minimum legal indoor temperature between Sept 1to June 15 is 20 degrees C.

Heating went on weeks ago.

I'm not poor, I can afford to have it running when required. Life's too short to sit in my house shivering,

Where are you based? I've been out today in a t-shirt, if the wind calms down it's pretty nice. Weather meant to be fine until January where it turns cold for a couple of months.

Must admit that's my view as well. Live in an old terraced house that hardly gets any sun. Not working all day to come home and sit in a cold house.

I think if you're out all day and come home for a few hours before bed, I can fully understand why you'd put the heating on anyway. It's a bit different with me as I work from home and I have the TV on while I'm working. That and the computer seems to generate enough heat to make the room about right. One thing I'd do though, is turn the radiators off in room where you don't often go in.

Can I just suggest the biggest culprit for damp and mold are lack of circulation.
If your house can't breath with the modern thinking of covering every hole in the house, you will have problems.

Opening windows while we still can, even fir half hour a day, will do it wonders.

Remember heat from wirhin the house will just hit the coldest and surface creating condensation.
Airflow is needed.

Heating on constant 20° 02:00-22:00 but has hardly kicked in given how mild it is.
The sun heats our house all day as the front of house is east facing, south facing side of house and west out back, it's doing a great job.

This is correct, however opening your windows will obviously make your house pretty cold in winter. Doing both is best - open windows for a while each day (in the late morning before the sun comes up is best - then close in the middle of the day and reap the benefits of passive solar heating!), and make sure your house stays warm (fewer cold spots on walls for water to condense).

I personally use a dehumidifier in the colder months rather than open the windows too much. Dry air is much quicker to heat too as it holds less moisture so it "feels" warmer.

Mine isn't on a timer yet but it's currently on boost for an hour. Was under 13 deg in here when I got up this morning but one morning last week it was below 11.
Gosh that’s really cold Tony! Our house hasn’t dropped below 18deg in a morning yet and heating set at 18.5? But have turned it up a bit for a few hours in the evening.
