Just finished a book by Neil Scott( I think), a fellow in his early forties who decided to run along every street and road in Manchester. Began in February 2020, just before Covid, he finished 21 months later in November 2021. Around 6275 streets and roads and he covered around 1400 miles. Because I lived there for school during the 60's I was intrigued and he did mention a huge number of interesting facts and details about various areas along the way, especially about the areas I lived close to such as Crumpsall, Moston, Collyhurst and Harpurhey( voted the worst location in the whole of Europe in a survey a few years back).
I remember reading about this bloke in the paper! I might have a look at his book. Like you, I grew up in Harpurhey (in the 90s) and still love locally in Blackley, just near the Clough if you remember it. The house i live in was the same one that Wilf McGuinness (ex United and England star) grew up in. He came round a couple of years ago with one his sons and told us stories about how he honed his footballing skills on the wall of the house (it's an end terrace).
I went to Harpur Mount primary school (which was opened by Emily Pankhurst) and then later to North Manchester High for Boys, which was probably a grammar in your day but not in mine!

And possibly the best psychological therapy going.
I totally agree. Outdoor running especially.

Any “sport” we’re the result is someone’s opinion.
And yes, I include boxing in that.

A friends partner, a nurse, once commented "do these people hate their knees?".....
Kind of summed up my feelings
Think your friends partner needs to do some research or find a different profession.

Which format?
Five day test cricket - e.g. the Ashes, is arguably one of the greatest sporting events ever devised. Anyone who watched the India series this summer can vouch for that.
Now, the hundred - that's a different matter, although many people enjoy it, it requires a high skill set from its participants and requires a high level of physical fitness.

Walking football is ok till the teams want to play in leagues and sideline the over 70s in favour of over 50s.

Cricket.
Created to stop OAPs from going out and clogging up our roads and footpaths. Who else would enjoy a 5 day game that might end up a draw?

I play for Burnley Clarets and we have teams for 60+,65+ abd 70+ in the respective leagues in the Greater Manchester Walking Football League. There’s no need for anyone to get sidelined as each age group has its own league.

Got to love people rubbishing other sports but getting defensive when someone does the same to a sport they enjoy.

I think all of the 'original' sports such as fox hunting, hare coursing, bear bating, cock fighting, animal trophy hunting, grouse shooting, etc... are all worse than rubbish.

Just ask Brian McKenna about that.
Moved to a bungalow because he was really struggling climbing the stairs in his house.
Wracked with pain, poor lad.

Baseball
Was in Orlando about 3 years ago and went to a chicken wings sports bar for an hour. The world series was on and I'm not joking, in the full hour we were there, no one hit the ball once. Absolute bore fest
Went to a game in Denver recently who are especially rubbish at moment and the sporting drama was none existent. There were some hits but no 6s- literally nothing sporting memorable happened. Still had a great time with beer and chat and ridiculous food options. It was all over too quickly despite the sporting meh.

The funniest thing on these threads is people getting all “ furious from Tunbridge Wells” when “ their “ sport is mentioned .

You can enjoy all 15 sessions of a 5 day test with all their twists and turns, and still be very unsure of the outcome going into the last over.
I can't think of any other sport where you can go into the last ball with all 4 results very much a possibility.
A draw, only settled on the last ball can be as exciting as a win, loss, or tie.
Great memories of James Anderson holding out for what proved to be a series winning draw on more than one occasion.

I enjoy running, always have but I dont even entertain my 18 stone mate in the pub when he makes comments about how 'sad' it is that I run most days.
I might have dodgy knees but he certainly struggles walking more than I do
