There was some Rennes supporter that said he only plays well when he wants to. Happy to sit on the bench and do something great every 5 or 6 games.

I haven't read everything on this thread so apologies if this has been referenced already.
Doubts about his game time and likening him to Defour in terms of durability and effectiveness are not issues which should stop us going ahead with a signing like this (there are of course other possible issues already discussed at length).
We're at the stage now where we're building a squad of players with a range of attributes so that we can introduce game changers during matches. For the remainder of this season at least two from Boyd, Arfield and JBG are always going to start in the wide positions, work hard and give us a platform in the hope that we can then go on and win the game in the later stages - which has been very effective at home. Introducing players like Defour and potentially Grosicki changes that dynamic and makes us less predictable, we're going to need that in the second half of the season as other teams will have had a good look at us by now.
It's a transition. Last season we only needed to play one way because we were so relentlessly efficient. If we're serious about becoming an established PL club then we have to improve the overall quality and variation of what we offer. It's a gradual process but a move for Grosicki, or similar, would move us further in that direction.

If the issue is this gambling debt can't we give him an incentive to clear it in the form of a bonus if we stay in the PL? Tell his agent he's got 5 months to be a hero and put himself in the shop window. If he hits certain targets (appearances, assists, goals etc) the more the bonus will be.

Going off certain individuals he has already got his debts down by a quarter . I think dyche will still be after him . I dont think hes going to be number 1 transfer target but if all else fails he could go back . We might have to get him soon before the vultures start sniffing

Don't think this one is totally out of the question. We need a winger that's for sure.

Things are kept very tight nowadays at the club, neither Boden or clarettony know what's going on behind the scenes, the fact that they both get things wrong show that. There are some other posters on here who seem to be able to get hold of the odd snippet but very little gets leaked out.... Quite rightly in my opinion.

I agree with what you say but it's a balancing act as the club should not want to get carried away, be relegated and have some expensive ineffective players of little resale value.

If we pay 7m for him his 10% signing on fee will pay off his debts in one go. Problem solved.

"if we pay 7m for him his 10% signing on fee will pay off his debts in one go. Problem solved."
That was the problem before. We agreed the fee with Rennes & the contract with the player.
The player refused to use his own finances to pay off his debt because he thought he had an agreement with Rennes that they would pay it.
Rennes didn't want to use any of the transfer fee to pay the debt so they came back to us and asked for more at the 11th hour.
We said no because, as far as we were concerned, everything was agreed and this was nothing to do with us.

There was only a few hours left of the transfer window by this time . The deal seemed to come out of the blue and before we knew it he was jumping on a plane and heading to england . You would of thought if the club was still serious about him they would of been keeping an eye on how he performs and also if he his trying to sort his own problems out .

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the issue was more with the Club asking for more money late into the deal rather than the player having gambling debts, although it did raise concerns about his off field activities to run up such a debt & how he would cope with this whilst at the club.
It happened like this....
Fee agreed with Rennes
Contract agreed with player
Player flies out for medical
Rennes call & ask for more money to pay for players gambling debt
We said no, we've already agreed a fee.
They pulled the deal.
Player flies back to Rennes.
I have a suspicion that Grosicki's debt is actually with Rennes i.e. they have bailed him out or given him an advance in wages to pay off a debt at some point during his time there. Hence they know how much he has reduced his debt by.
Dyche isn't the type of person to write a person off bcause of something they have done in the past. He's pragmatic and willing to give people a second chance. If a deal can be struck without the need for BFC to pay any additional money on top of a transfer fee & contract, I think Dyche would still be interested.
I agree with others on here though, I don't think he will be first choice.

If that is right, then it sounds entirely solvable. Begs a question why we allowed it to get so last minute but that is another debate.
If he's as good as he's claimed to be, it'd be bizarre for us not to look to broker a solution.

Maybe it was Rennes who allowed it to get so last minute. Not everything is Burnley FC's fault in an action involving another club/party.

Clubs in Europe are only too aware of the money sloshing around the Premier League. Rennes obviously thought we would be willing to use some of it to clear Grosicki's debts.

It had nothing to do with either Rennes or Burnley.
The players was at fault, as he anticipated one of the clubs paying his debt.
The casino in question isn't in Rennes, by all accounts he likes to gamble away from home.
And it's only one place he owes money.
The club have paid half the 300,000€ and the player the rest

Depends which way you look at it HMHB. Ultimately, blame lies with Grosicki getting into debt in the first place. However, as for the deal itself collapsing, it was Rennes who requested the money to clear the players debt, not the player. It's also Rennes who could have used a portion of the transfer fee to clear the debt.
I don't know who he owes the money too. I just remember a similar scenario where Matt Etherington signed for stoke & they gave him an advance in wages to pay off gambling debts, so he paid the club back on a weekly basis with deductions from his agreed wage. Sounded like this may be that situation otherwise I can;t understand why Rennes would pay any of the debt at all.

There's some dispute as to what went on with the transfer. Rennes is a shady club, run by billionaires.
They have a reputation for this type of thing.

Doesn't the chairman's comment about attitude when we pulled the plug last time suggest there's more to it than just a debt?

The winger from Rennes I would have loved us to sign is Paul-Georges Ntep. He started his career at the French club I follow, Auxerre. Old-fashioned winger who beats his man for pace and then cuts the ball back from the byline. Suffered a lot from injuries just as the "big clubs" were getting interested. Has finally resumed playing regularly this season and has done well. But he looks like he's off to Wolfsburg. The rumoured fee is €5m. Firstly, because he's out of contract in June and secondly (I think) because clubs are concerned about his injury record.

Fairly tenuous link gets picked up by French/Polish media, they parrot it and the fact that it appears in a foreign language somehow enhances the credibility of the rumour.

I thought he looked good in the Euros, unsure why he's only started 6 times this season though, if it's ability then he's probably not good enough for us (PL).

Thanks for the info, I must have presumed wrong although he hasn't started a large part of their games. I'm guessing he hasn't been injured either considering he's featured 17 times.

He's currently 7/1 to join the Clarets.
A chum of mine who works for Paddy Power says they've taken a £5,000 pound bet on him joining from someone called Camel Grusikhi who has a French IP address.
Looking good.

That made me chuckle, but when I also heard from the bookies in Padiham road that a guy named Josef Bartolksi has also piled a wad in this, maybe it is true?

I'd say if someone with that name and ip address is backing something to happen it probably won't happen given his alleged success at the turf accountants.

It stinks to high heaven, a sordid tale of debt rather than football ability.
Instead of excitement at a footballers skill and the prospect of him coming to Burnley,we read nothing but squalid details of some unseen player, who wants nothing more than to arrange a move to solve his financial problems.
He has no desire to be here, just a quick fix to see him through till he arses up again.Very shoddy work.
